Course Description

How would you like to be a published author by the end of the day... for free?

Welcome to the only complete Udemy self-publishing guide that shows you how to do it all yourself for free.  Nothing is left out of this video guide that covers everything from creating a book cover to marketing your published book.  This course is now 15 hours long.

My name is Brian Jackson and during the last 10 years, I've created hundreds of book covers and published well over 100 books.  In this course, I'll explain the entire process to you allowing you to quickly become a published author given nothing more than a finished manuscript.

This course covers:

Book Cover

Fast and easy, create a free professional-quality book cover using the Canva online graphic design tool and free images from Pixabay.  All you need is a web browser to have a finished book cover in under 10 minutes.  The process I demonstrate utilizes free Canva Kindle book cover themes to quickly create professional-quality book covers including free images from Pixabay.

Format Your Manuscript

Quickly format your manuscript for Amazon publication using Microsoft Word 2010 or beyond (Word 2016 running on Windows 10 is demonstrated).  Learn both traditional style formatting and use the free Kindle Create Word plugin to format your manuscript.  Following my detailed instructions guarantees a polished finished product.  The process I demonstrate ultimately augments the use of the free Kindle Create Microsoft Word plugin with traditional formatting techniques to produce very clean manuscripts that are a pleasure to read.

Note: I personally never use Kindle Create and instead use the traditional formatting method explained and demonstrated in the course.

Self-publish on Amazon

Self-publish your book in minutes on Amazon in Kindle and Print on Demand (POD) paperback formats using the free Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) web-based interface.  Once complete, you're a published author, but that doesn't mean that you're done...

Market Your Book

Take the first steps toward marketing your book for free to become an Amazon bestseller.  Make money and friends as you gain readership.

Self-publish Off Amazon via Smashwords

Learn to self-publish an e-book everywhere but Amazon via Smashwords.  Smashwords is a one stop publishing option that distributes your e-book to the Apple Store, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and more.

And the whole process is free because you do it yourself.  Given a finished manuscript, a copy of Microsoft Word 2010 or later and a web browser, you can become a published author by the end of the day.

In fact, I'm embarrassed to have to admit that purchasing this course could be your greatest expense... though I assure you it's well worth any reasonable cost considering the money and time you'll save to become a published author today!

*** On 6/2022, I merged all of my self-publishing courses to produce a single 15-hour course ***

Here are the courses that were added:

Self-publishing: Free Amazon Kindle eBook Self-publishing
My original self-publishing course contains details on formatting and filling in every KDP field during publication.

Self-publishing Amazon Books (CreateSpace Self-publishing)
A course specifically on self-publishing POD paperbacks on Amazon via KDP.

Self-publishing Smashwords Books: Non-Amazon Self-publishing
Information on self-publishing an e-book everywhere but Amazon via Smashwords.

Amazon Self-publishing: Self-publishing in Kindle/Paperback
Additional publishing information extending the other courses.

Mac users should be aware that the Kindle Create method is currently only available on Windows.  However, the traditional method is my preferred method anyway ;-).

Don't forget the Udemy 30-day no-questions-asked money back guarantee.  If you're not happy with the course, just return it.  So, there's no risk involved.  That should make your choice a no-brainer.

Enroll in the course and I'll see you in the classroom,

---Brian

Instructor Details

Brian Jackson

Hello,

My name is Brian Jackson. I'm the author of about a dozen books, the publisher of well over 100 books, and a Udemy instructor with over 40 courses.

This is my story...

1 Origins

I was born in the middle of the last century in Los Angeles, California. I graduated from Humboldt State University, surrounded by the redwoods of Northern California. After 14 years at Lockheed Missiles and Space as an IBM system programmer and 12 years at Cisco Systems as a test engineer, I retired at 48.

I instantly became bored.

2 Community College

To break the boredom, I enrolled at Columbia Community College to take writing, art, acting and statistics classes. I took 24 units over one year and received straight “A”s.

I was still bored.

3 Writing and Self-publishing

I began writing fiction and nonfiction books and self-publishing them on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords in July 2011. Though I wrote and published several books, my self-publishing business didn’t take off until my wife joined me.

4 My Wife and Author, Melanie Jackson

Melanie Jackson, my wife, was an author publishing over two romance novels per year through her New York publisher, Dorchester Press. After publishing 24 novels with Dorchester, the company folded, and Melanie was without a publisher (she wanted to write cozy mysteries anyway).

Rating: 5.0 out of 5 I needed a little "push" to get some things I have written over the years published, so I was intrigued with the publishing aspect of this course. I will have to say that Brian exceeded my expectation. As a result I have published a few books on Amazon with more on the way. Given that my goal to become a published author has been a lifelong goal, it is not a stretch to say that Brian’s course was absolutely lifechanging! I've taken a lot of courses on Udemy, but hands down, this is the best one ever! A very sincere thanks, Brian!

Brian, I appreciate that you updated this course. I got a lot out of it up to lesson 15. But then the course repeated several times. I was interested in a certificate of completion and found myself ignoring all the lessons from previous years. But before Udemy would give me a certificate, all the little boxes needed to be checked. It was tedious. But, I checked all the boxes. I got my certificate.

This course is more than you asked for -- there is so much content! It is exactly what I needed: specific, in-depth, practical. I fumbled my way through KDP years ago, and this course is making the process much easier -- and answering questions I didn't even know I had. Highly recommended. Bear in mind the screenshots are dated (because Amazon has changed KDP's layout over the years), but if you listen to the directions it is easy to follow along and figure it out. Thank you, Brian Jackson, for sharing your experience!

The course several useful observations and insights. Two issues I've had with it. One, it is a bit dated - could use updating (though it may have some of that at the end). Two, and more importantly, only after I purchased the course did I realize that the entire section on publishing your e-book was of no value to me because he used a program that only works on a PC and not on a Mac. That would have been useful information. All the publishing material did little to benefit Mac users.

I'm excited. I have a DNA manuscript of around 5000 words with links to web pages I used for my research. I would like to publish it as an e-book. I'm ready to publish my book, but I need to review this entire course. I didn't format the book in the beginning (I didn't really know Word and all it's little tricks to formatting).

I don't mean to sound harsh but I'm fairly disappointed in this course. Granted this is a basics course and it WILL take you through the absolute basics of publishing with KDP, but none of the information covered here is anything extraordinary. You can find all the same tips and information for free with a quick Google search. I'm especially disappointed with the Book Marketing section, which is the main reason I bought and slogged through so much of the earlier parts of this course. None of the tips were really about how to market your book or draw in new readers. It was more of a short list of what features Amazon has, and not really any solid marketing advice. What's more, the section became a compilation of things brought up earlier in the course and made the whole section feel like a rehash rather than anything valuable for that big step after publishing. I honestly wish I would have listened to this course out of order so that I would have thought to ask for a refund. Now for some positives. Honestly, this wasn't a horrible course and the instructor seems nice and sincere. However, when this course says basics, just know that it really does mean BASICS. So if you feel utterly and hopelessly distraught at the idea of self-publishing your book this course will hold your hand and walk you through enough to get the job done. But if you've already been doing some independent research into self-publishing I would recommend skipping this one altogether.

Does exactly as it says on the tin. Brian comes across as a really nice guy and explains everything in an easy to understand fashion, all well backed up by well-shot video content. You can probably get to a stage of formatting and publishing your completed Word manuscript complete with self-designed cover on Kindle in less than an hour by cherry-picking the lectures you watch, but all of the material is informative and enjoyable to take in.

By Di on 9/8/2019

So far so good. The instructor is clear, easy to follow, and does not repeat the same information over and over as sometimes happens. I am aware of the irony of my first review about the instructor not repeating. LOL Whole lessons repeat! Still as poorly done as this course is, I am enjoying it and learning a ton, so I still give it 5 stars as it is achieving it's purpose.

By Barbara Workman on 9/12/2018

I really enjoyed the course. The material is concise and presented in an entertaining and friendly manner. When I uploaded my cover assignment the instructor promptly gave me suggestions for improvement. The material for the course is given in easy to understand instructions. Following the instructions, I learned how to download, install and use Kindle Creator to format the manuscript I had for the course. By the end of the course I had designed my cover, formatted my manuscript and published them as an ebook on Amazon.

This teacher has a gift for this type of course. However, it should be taken first and his other courses next. I took his other courses first. He could also use an editor to catch misspells like category and I can't even get it to hold here with the 'a' in it. There are others. Also, I decidedly don't like the elephant picture for the cover. Depressing grays with an offense attitude like they are getting ready to fight. Am I the enemy? How about some books, or a library, or someone writing or even some flowers? I was going to lower the rating, but then decided the course was good and the track record is great. If I had taken the course first, I would have been entirely happy.
