Course Description

Deploy a production-ready Serverless Django Application by using a Docker Container, Google Cloud Build, Google Cloud SQL, & Google Cloud Run.

Serverless allows us to focus on our code and deploy more. What's better, our serverless applications only cost us money when they're used.

Traditionally, serverless was reserved for non-containerized applications. Google Cloud Run and the open-source equivalent Knative unlocks serverless for containers. Google Cloud Run is a managed version of Knative. Knative is a package for Kubernetes. In other words, you get the benefits of Kubernetes and Knative when you use Google Cloud Run.

Docker Containers make it easy to create our own isolated environment on the operating system level. This is exactly what we need in so many applications. Docker containers have pioneered a new way of deployment options because we now have complete control over the system-level runtime.

Learn to build and deploy a serverless Django application on Google Cloud Platform's Cloud Run service.

Serverless apps using containers is seriously amazing. Let's see why.

We'll cover:

  • Minimal Dockerfile for Containerizing Django

  • Cloud Build

  • Cloud SQL with Postgres

  • Cloud SQL Proxy for Local Dev Access

  • Cloud Run

It all started with an idea. I wanted freedom... badly. Freedom from work, freedom from boredom, and, most of all, the freedom to choose. This simple idea grew to define me; it made me become an entrepreneur.

As I strived to gain freedom, overtime I realized that with everything that you do you can either (1) convince someone, somehow, to do it with you or (2) figure out how to do it yourself.

Due to a lack of financial resources (and probably the ability to convince people to do high quality work for free), I decided to learn. Then learn some more. Then some more. My path of learning website design started a long time ago. And yes, it was out of need not desire. I believed I needed a website for a company that I started. So I learned how to do it. The company died, my skills lived on... and got better and better.

It took me a while after learning web design (html/css) to actually start learning programming (web application, storing "data", user logins, etc). I tinkered with Wordpress, believing it could be a "user" site, but I was mistaken. Sure there are/were hacks for that, but they were hacks/work-arounds and simply not-what-wordpress-was-indended-to-be. Wordpress is for blogs/content. Plain and simple.

Muy buena explicación para implementar django con google cloud, me gustaría que hubieran cubierto la parte de archivos estáticos.

This is the best course that I do, simple, direct to the point (less code and more Cloud concepts). Congratulations for this course.

Totally, Awesome, the reason i searched for this course, it is because, my workplace, they are using it, so i couldn't not understand GCP documentation. This has save me a lot

By Alec Topirceanu on 6/25/2023

The video is outdated, I received a lot of errors using the same commands from the video to connect to the db and I spend more time debugging than actually learning from this tutorial.

This course is an excellent reference. With the knowledge gained here, I was able to: (1) do python manage.py migrate, which I had not been able to do even after reading the Google documentation; (2) after further research, to serve static files uploaded to a Google Storage bucket. Thank you very much.

Finally, a step-by-step approach beyond the simple start-your-project. Great Material still valid in Oct. 2022

Se nota que el profesor tiene bastante experiencia, y me es bastante util todos los conocimientos de Django con GCP para mi trabajo actual. Millón gracias.

A bit more time between entering code / terminal commands would be appreciated. Had to go back a few times to double check if I am entering everything correctly.

CI/CD, scaling missing - good course but a lot is out of scope. Basic course to deploy to gcloud/run.

By Vinay Julme on 10/21/2020

I guess, I was expecting the advance level stuff, so little disenchanted. Thee course is good for development and POC. But would require advance stuff for production.
