Seth Godin's Value Creation Master Class (Udemy.com)

Learn how to ask the right questions, brainstorm innovative ideas, and design projects that succeed

Created by: Seth Godin

Last updated October 2016

Our take

Based on the ratings of 5,693 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in October 2016. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short, focused course from Seth Godin built around one question: what value does your project create for the people it serves? It runs 42 minutes across 19 lectures in six sections, and it leans on a 35-page workbook that the description says should be printed and completed. It is aimed at leaders, marketers, managers and freelancers who already have a project or idea to test. It assumes basic marketing knowledge and skips budgets and investor pitches.

Reviewers like the bite-sized lectures, the real-world examples and the workbook. Of 5,693 ratings, 2,634 are five stars and 2,227 are four, with 695 threes. Students say Godin explains things clearly and that his questions are pertinent. The complaints are scattered. One reviewer calls the pace slow, one wanted more images and summaries, one was unsure whether to use the video and printout together, and two felt it lacked depth or a bigger framework for something called a master class. It was last updated in 2016, though the reviews don't flag it as dated.

At under an hour, the time cost is small, and the workbook is where the real value sits. Treat it as a primer or a checklist before a launch, not a full strategy course. Anyone who will sit down and write honest answers should get something from it. Anyone hoping for a deep framework will likely feel it ends too soon.

Best forLeaders, marketers and freelancers with a live project who will actually fill in the workbook.
Skip it ifYou want a deep, step-by-step strategy framework, budgeting help or pitch coaching.

Pros

  • Short lectures (42 minutes total) that reviewers say are easy to follow with no drifting
  • A 35-page workbook that students use on real launches and say helps them check their offer
  • Godin's questions are called pertinent and applied to real-world scenarios
  • Under an hour in total, and a certificate of completion is included

Cons

  • Two reviewers say it lacks depth for a course called a master class
  • One reviewer finds the pace slow, and another says the questions feel loosely connected
  • Last updated in 2016, and light on visuals, with unclear video and printout use
Seth has incredible insight and explains things so well. I have already downloaded his resource and filled it out completely for the launch of my product very soon!

Labeled intermediate, but it needs only basic marketing knowledge and a real project to work on.

Who it is for

The instructor says it suits

  • This is a Master Class, designed for people who are ready to leap.

Course Description

A new course from one of Udemy's most popular teachers.

Are you ready to take your work to a new level?

This project you’re working on, the new business or offering, what sort of value does it create?

This is a loaded question but a vital one. That's our work. It's what we do: we build organizations and projects that create value. No value, no project. Understanding the levers of value creation gives you a significant unfair advantage.

This is a master class for leaders, marketers, managers and freelancers. It includes a 35-page workbook and a series of direct, useful conversations that are guaranteed to change the way you approach your work.

What we’re seeking here isn’t a fancy elevator pitch or a carefully compressed mission statement. Instead, the challenge is to describe (without regard in any way for how you benefit, or for how your organization profits), precisely what’s in it for the user, the customer, the people you seek to serve.

Seth Godin is one of the most popular bloggers in the world, the guy American Way Magazine called, “America’s Greatest Marketer.” He’s written 18 bestselling books, started successful companies, but mostly, he’s a teacher.

In his first ever Master Class, Godin doesn’t waste time with entertainment. Instead, he’s put together a focused, useful course and a significant workbook, all designed to help you produce more value in less time.

Watch the videos, do the workbook, engage with your fellow students and then repeat the process. After a few cycles, you will begin to see things you’ve never realized were important.

Go make a difference. This course will help make that possible.

Great short course from Seth Godin on creating value. Its perfect add on to existing knowledge on a topic you may have. I liked the free resource from Seth which serves a self-discovery of your process and hells you understand better if you are ticking all the boxes and are aligned with your goal to add value for your customers/clients with offer you have.

It would have been nice if examples are anchored on a few businesses to coherently flow and bridge the concepts. Example, Seth Godin mentioned the book wrapping business that he ran and it needed to evolve as the internet changed the playing field. Well, this could be a business example as a final section that coherently connects the different concepts from understanding the problem, leveraging assets, spreading the vision and how he sustained the vision.

I feel that he is directly addressing the key issues - i need to spend more time on this

By Joy C Young on 9/23/2020

Yes, information is clear and concise.

By Yuriy Plakosh on 9/20/2020

This is a high quality course that asks the right questions to answer before you even start creating your new product. I believe it will also give a lot of value for the existing product and can bring a lot of insights to the marketer by answering all those questions which are sometimes tough to answer. But they really need your answers.

By Arnab Pal Chowdhury on 9/17/2020

Awesome.Simple and to the point

By Seenuvasan Velayutham on 9/13/2020

The value of this course is not just the content, which is great, but how inspiring Seth can be. That's the value he offers beyond the course.

By Arvind Srivatsav Vijayagopalan on 9/9/2020

An eye opener in how we approach Value creation and problem solving.

By Dipankar Mishra on 9/5/2020

For me it was a good match. However I felt that the course can be detailed a bit more to get the understanding better.
