Course Description
Let's make school better.
Education created the world we live in. Enforced, top-down, compliance-based education. By definition, it's scarce, it's accredited and there are tests to prove you did what you were told.
And now, a revolution is coming. It's about learning, not education. It's about being remote, about being in teams, about choosing to level up and commiting to something important.
In this series of lectures, Seth Godin shares his forty years of experience as a teacher, with a special focus on the transformative power of a new sort of learning. He founded the altMBA, the most effective executive education of its kind, and then expanded it into Akimbo, which has more than 20,000 alumni in more than 70 countries. He's been in the weeds, working with students from the age of 6 to 80.
Now it's your turn.
Akimbo has become an independent B corp, and it's no longer owned or run by Seth, but he's using this series of lectures to share its secrets.
The challenge for attendees will be to commit enough to form cohorts, to experiment and to create their own next-generation learning interventions.
The internet changes everything, and now it's going to change education. It's up to people like you to help lead the way toward better.

I'm a Seth Godin fan already. He's a plain speaker i.e. tells it how it is. The problem really is that many schools have traditional assessment and teach to the test. As Seth would say: 'Drip, drip, drip' - change happens because of people who choose to lead. What/who/when/where/why/how do you want to lead?

I really love this course because Mr. Seth Godin is calmly and seriously to me because he was talking and giving a very important insights to someone who wants to know and learn to change the way he thinks, who is me. Thank you Mr. Godin May you be healthy and take care of yourself peacefully and healthily.

There was a time when educational content was scarce and access to “experts” was near impossible. Today, the opposite is true. The internet has practically eliminated the original gatekeepers of knowledge, making access to information cheap and abundant. These lectures have helped me see what's possible in the online education space. Now, I'm on my way to put these ideas to practice and bring to life the change I seek to make!

I am a big fan of Seth and his ideas. This short course would have been perfect if it weren’t for the plugs for Akimbo. I see the point why he did this but sharing video testimonials of akimbo students at the end felt like crossing a line. Still a good, thought provoking course to take!

there's a lot to process here... understanding how it all fits into my life and my aspirations for teaching and learning isn't slam dunk, immediate clarity... there are a few aha! moments for me mixed with recognition of what I've heard from Seth over the years and that sounds repetitious... okay, so maybe I should give it 4 1/2 stars... I know you're not looking for a grade, but there's a comic touch of irony in the star rating business here...

It is an excellent start. I can connect with all this because when I was in school and university, I was trying to understand the subjects and not cram and regurgitate. The biggest challenge is that as Seth pointed that we are so brain-washed in the system with so called experts, who I would like to term spin-doctors, who gain by supporting the systems. The clear example of that is the vaccine to treat Covid. Vaccines have not worked despite decades of research for flu and we are on that system and don't want to look outside the box for a solution. The worst thing is if someone comes up with a solution, they are throttled by the communication systems and media so that majority does not know the truth. This system Akimbo, falls in the same boat and unless we can create living and doing high-end work without the "Certificates", which unfortunately is considered the way to keep out the dodgy people, how will it succeed. This is my observation. If interested, I would love to communicate more on this. I loved the initiative.

Speaks a lot about the reality of school (education) and learning, where the rich nations has contemplated on this dilemma, I from a developing country stills follow what has been passed on from influential countries. This changes a lot from my perspective. Recommended for anyone who is sick of fitting in in this new world of standing out.

Seth shared thoughts/ideas, some of which reinforced how I've approached learning, some reminded me to focus more precisely. I would say there was nothing new. What was unique was the force of Seth's presence. His conviction about learning comes through powerfully and in itself is a motivator to use these ideas in even greater depth.

These lectures were a good match for me. My "ah hah" moments were that (1) lectures are not meant to "transmit knowledge" but "to have students figure out" the answer on their own during the lecture, (2) learning is increased when students take open book tests, and (3) learning is increased when students work in groups and share their ideas, as well as, review peers and vice versa.

I am an educator, college level, and I am a huge fan of John Dewey and the Chicago School. Believing that we must distrupt the traditional notion of education that promotes compliance and factory-model acculturation, I have tried to build my courses around getting students to DO and to solve problems. It it thrilling to hear someone in industry who sees that our current models of educating—validating those who cannot DO (unless it's to game a system)—is broken for reasons I have felt for years. I look forward to hearing more.
