Course Description

Leadership in tech is often ignored until it is too late. We all start out as junior developers or engineers, and slowly work our way up the corporate ladder. Then one day we open our eyes and look around, and we realize we're in charge of the team, a product, or the entire organization.

For some of us this leadership comes naturally, while for others it's a daily struggle. You might be thinking that leadership is something you're born with, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Great leadership is a skill, just like coding and engineering, and it can be learned.

Sonsoles and Mark spent many years working in tech organizations, some great, others not so much. Over the years they realized they were seeing the same toxic leadership patterns over and over. We call these patterns Managerial Anti-Patterns, and they arise out of weak personal power, a toxic communication style, or both.

Being aware of these anti-patterns is the first step on your journey to become an outstanding tech leader.

If you want to become immune to these anti-patterns, you must first master a solid foundation of skills and tools. Sonsoles and Mark will teach you how to improve your communication, cultivate your personal power, and change your daily habits from the inside out, to become a powerful tech leader and achieve career success.

You'll learn to harness six tools of effective leadership and communication: use Introvert Superpowers, Align your team, Question assumptions, Embrace creativity, Become a Service Designer, and practice Healthy Decision Making.

With these tools you will:

  • Gain a robust understanding of what it takes to be an effective leader

  • Learn actionable tools to shift your mindset into a leadership mindset

  • Embrace the role of Service Designer and let your team lead you to success

In the demanding, ever-changing workplaces of today, it’s not enough to be a manager. You must truly learn how to be a leader - someone who influences and transforms how others feel about themselves and the work they do.

Take action and learn how to harness the power of healthy tech leadership today!

Nice collections of topics for tech leaders: team fixing, anti-patterns. The instructors know their content, and the visual course content is easy to follow. Note that the video transcripts should be reviewed, I think it is AI-generated, and the instructors should rewrite it.

Lots of focus on problems and antipatterns, would have liked to see more about what you can improve in constructive and positive environments.

This is the second course I took from Mark Farragher, and I'm delighted once more!

By David Espino on 8/3/2021

I understand the capacity / experience and leadership of the people giving the course is proven. But if you're going to put a person to give a course in english that it's pretty much a listening course, you should be super assured that english pronunciation is not a problem for them. It's really hard to keep the attention focussed when the person giving the lesson is notably hesitating with the words used. Even more for these type of courses that are soft skills related. If that is not possible, you can always put a translation audio track on top of the original video.

I really like the amount of information to this point of the course, yet I would take a closer look to the subtitles, they missspell some key words although the instructor pronounces clearly enough not to make it a big problem. Sonsoles speech speed makes it hard to follow the rithm of the explanation, x1.5 minimum is required, which makes the voice sound weird and some words unheard

Well structured, clear pieces of information that can be incorporated at your own pace. And focused on cases that I have encountered in my IT career. Some I knew, some I never formulated or formalized, some I was doing and some are being done near me. I am already putting some of the acquired knowledge into practice.

I think this course should be a mandatory for every one who works in the Tech industry but not only. From my own personal experience, as a software engineer, architect, several teams leader I can say that I really love the formalization of what I was already believed in: first of all things, be a good, cooperative and modest person are the best qualities for teams. I saw all kinds of managers who destroyed teams and than run away, managers that don't even care what's going on etc. I feel that this course is great for everyone, well thought. I love Sonsoles accent, and the fact that you are standing in front of the camera! Also I really found your sections interesting and to the point very well. I took many of Mark's courses, Mark is one of the best lecturers I encounter on many online courser, a true professional. Thanks you both for the course. (not competed yet).

I was intrigued by this course mainly because I have taken Mark's previous courses and I like a lot his style. I'm not disappointed. Even though most of the content is not new to me, there's always value in re-learning this on a regular basis. I gave the course four stars because I think Sonsoles' chapters could use some more visual aid, and a bit more of fluidity in her speech. I think this course is especially recommendable for Senior Developers who either are wondering whether they would want to pursue a role that requires leadership skills, or simply want to know how and why bureaucracies are the way they are (and what can they do about it).

By Simon RJ Fogg on 9/3/2017

A 5-star review from me. I am an IT pro in the 4th decade of my career, mainly business consultancy and projecct mgt roles. Although the course is marketed as a Tech Leadership and Comms Skills course, the vast majority of the content is applicable to all people working in all organisations. Much of the course content was either new to me or gave me terms and language to use to describe a large number of real life examples in my own career currently and in days gone by. The course content is highly practical and encourages the learner to diagnose the issues confronting their team(s) in their organisation (and across organisations in collaborative teams) and to then do something about them i.e. sort them out! I loved the practical implementability of this course. My personal experience is that more often than not teamworking issues that impact performance are not properly identified, diagnosed or addressed and are simply ignored. I highly recommend this course as an introduction to these subjects. I encourage people to apply this content to make their teams more effective and productive. I've taken many of Mark's online courses in the past, but I've only just come to realize that this one might be the most important one of all. If you're like me, then you've spent a great deal of time training technical skills: writing code that's clean, well-performing, scalable, yada yada. In this course however, Sonsoles puts the spotlight on the *soft skills* that (IMO) are often overlooked, but just as important. I think of it as the missing link: having a toolbox full of great programming tricks is great, but it will only get you so far if you are clueless about how to use these tricks to further your own career. And this course will show you how to do that
