Learn the basics of ethical hacking, penetration testing, web testing and wifi hacking in kali linux!

Our take

Based on the ratings of 14,120 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2016. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a free, four hour sampler cut from Ermin Kreponic's much longer paid Kali Linux course. The syllabus shows 22 lectures across five sections: what ethical hacking is, installing VirtualBox and Kali, Linux terminal basics, then a 111 minute section that touches Tor, VPNs, macchanger, proxychains, aircrack and denial of service attacks. It suits someone who has never opened a Linux terminal and wants to find out whether penetration testing interests them before paying for anything. About 380,000 students have enrolled, and it holds a 4.3 rating across roughly 14,000 reviews.

Reviewers like the teaching itself. Kreponic speaks clearly and explains things in a way one reviewer calls lucid, a non-native English speaker says he's easy to follow, and another praises his patience. The complaints are consistent and fair. Most lectures are labelled "part 1" and end by pointing to a part 2 that only exists in the paid course, so no single attack is shown from start to finish, and several low-star reviews call it an advertisement. The examples are also run on Fedora rather than on the Kali machine students just built, which confuses people trying to follow along. The course was last updated in April 2016, so the installation steps are stale and some students had to search around to get Kali running.

Treat it as a free preview, not a course. If the explanations click, the paid version, or a complete course it sits beside such as Learn Ethical Hacking From Scratch, will finish what this one starts. If you want something usable on its own, skip it. As a zero cost way to spend an evening finding out whether this field is for you, it still does the job.

Best forComplete beginners who want a free, zero risk look at Kali Linux and the pen testing toolset before buying a full course.
Skip it ifYou want to see even one attack carried out end to end, or you need setup steps that work on current Kali and VirtualBox.

Pros

  • Free, and short enough to finish in an evening: 22 lectures, about 4 hours.
  • Kreponic speaks clearly; a non-native English speaker says he's easy to follow.
  • Introduces the real starter toolkit: VirtualBox, the terminal, Tor, macchanger, aircrack, proxychains.
  • Gives enough context on what ethical hacking is to decide whether to go further.

Cons

  • Most lectures end at "part 1" with the rest only in the paid course, so nothing is shown end to end.
  • Last updated in 2016; the installation steps no longer match current Kali or VirtualBox.
  • Examples run on Fedora after the Kali setup, which trips up people following along.
Informative, engaging and well explained. Installation guides are a bit outdated and the free version of this course is a great course for a beginner but doesn't actually get into TOO much depth, which is fair since this is a free course.

Genuinely beginner: no Linux needed, but you need a wireless card and patience with setup steps from 2016.

Well, some of the instructions were based on earlier versions of Linux and slightly outmoded in my latest Fedora 34. I could do some web search and solve them. One example is on installing kali linux on virtualbox. I directly downloaded the VM version of Kali after I tried every other method and countered errors. In any case, it is a very nice course and appreciate author's lucid way of explaining.

Informative, engaging and well explained. Installation guides are a bit outdated and the free version of this course is a great course for a beginner but doesn't actually get into TOO much depth, which is fair since this is a free course. Even with the full course i had trouble with installation especially with all the airs(airdump and airmong don't work for macOS) so youll need to find alternative ways on your own.. which for someone who isn't familiar with computers would be difficult. This course is GREAT for someone on a linux OS (as host) but not fit for other operating systems because the course instructions most times won't be the same and you'll need to find new/different methods through the web to keep up with this course.

My experience here in udemy is actually good but when you apply in real, there is something forgotten that lack of explanation about what device is supported further about using aircrack-ng and when i compare to other written tutorial. that is not much enough... to accurate configuration about functioning the of the mode monitor. specific but not much information implemented. then one of the lack of this tutorial generally is no explanation, if there some error or if there some lack of configuration need to apply... because everybody not the same use of machine or gadget, and there is also need to change, that the commonly used OS for hacking is kali linux, fedora is also used for hacking but not in general, what ever you look at any website they are recommend to kali than any other OS, because tutorial need a reliable good enought. and reliable is important in any corner of studying, when we talk about instructor, he is good, excellent, object oriented explain. that is it.

I have not been able to continue with my courses before and after the twin hurricanes Irma and Maria. I was without light and water for 36 days and would go and come until about a week and a half. My internet has been working for a couple days. I had missed the courses and this one was my reward. Thank you.

The content which was covered was explained very well by the instructor but, the content was too less. It did not even cover one complete attack. I assume this is because it is a free course. It would be great if the instructor adds some more videos to the free course to get a proper understanding. Also a large part of this course is on installing things, and I don't think the professionals out there are interested in listening that. So, I suggest to improvise the content by adding more of vulnerability scanning and pen. testing rather than installation of the virtual environment and various other tools. Thanks and Regards

Very good information provided within the course about ethical hacking, and what is used, and how things are used to accomplish some of these tasks. I think all people in the computer area should take these types of courses to better understand how, and what hackers are using to perform these types of attacks.

The instructor is clear and show all in practice using the terminal. I only regret that he is not using Kali but Fedora, we installed Kali with his help but he is sometimes talking about his main Fedora machine and using at the end Fedora for the commands what Fedora and Kali doesn't fully have the same commands and apps installed. I definitively bought the next paid course cause he seems to be very good in teaching.

Many kudos to the instructors teaching style who breaks it down to a "crawl" phase for us beginners who eventually want to "walk" and "run" with like content. Was totally stoked about upgrading to the full course when I learned that I already had. I purchased the course when I purchased this one....with the completion of this course I now feel primed to attack the full one...many thanks to Ermin and all the instructor staff....God Bless!
