Our take

Based on the ratings of 10,834 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is Rob Percival's follow-along course for people who have never written a line of code and want to ship an iPhone app. About 30 hours across 224 lectures, starting with Swift basics in Playgrounds, then timers, tables, storage, maps, Core Data and SpriteKit, before the big builds: Instagram, Tinder, Uber and Snapchat clones. Sixteen sections, six quizzes, no coding exercises. It was published in 2016 for iOS 10, Swift 3 and Xcode 8. Udemy lists a December 2025 update, but the syllabus still names the old tools, so expect screens that don't match today's Xcode.

Students like how Percival explains things. One reviewer calls him hands down the best explainer he's had on Udemy, others say clear and easy to follow, and the app-a-section format gives beginners something running fast. The complaints are consistent. Three-star reviewers say some code doesn't work, lessons are buggy, and forum questions went unanswered. One experienced developer flagged bad practices a beginner wouldn't spot. Others note the 'clones' only cover one headline feature each, that a few videos repeat (the Parse server setup), and that lessons hand out recipes without the theory or any help reading Apple's documentation.

Value depends on the goal. For a gentle first pass at how an iOS project fits together, it still works, and 4.5 stars from over 10,800 reviews is not nothing. But the syllabus is anchored to iOS 10, and newer courses in the same category sit beside it. Our take: take it for Percival's teaching and expect to fix version breaks along the way. Otherwise pick a course that tracks current Xcode.

Best forTotal beginners who learn by copying one app build after another and don't mind old Xcode screenshots.
Skip it ifYou need current SwiftUI or Xcode, or you want the theory behind each recipe rather than a follow-along.

Pros

  • One reviewer calls Percival hands down the best explainer on Udemy; others say clear and easy to follow
  • Builds app after app, from simple games to Instagram, Tinder, Uber and Snapchat style clones
  • Covers the whole path from installing Xcode to submitting to the App Store
  • Starts from zero with Swift basics in Playgrounds before any app, no coding background assumed

Cons

  • Built on iOS 10, Swift 3 and Xcode 8; three-star reviewers say some code doesn't work and lessons are buggy
  • Forum support was patchy; two reviewers say their questions went unanswered
  • Recipe-style teaching with little theory, and one experienced dev flagged bad practices
Out of all the instructors I've had on Udemy, Rob is hands down the best at explaining.
Nickolas A. Natali, a student

Listed as all levels, but it's a true beginner course; the one experienced developer who reviewed it mainly noticed the bad practices.

This was an amazing course for me! I was a complete beginner to Swift and Xcode and this course helped me gain the right knowledge to create IOS apps. The instructor walks through everything with you and you get to create many different apps which are super cool, starting out simple and ending up complex! The instructor made the course fun and clear and this really helped me gain my foundation for Swift and Xcode. Even now, I can always reference this course when I am stuck on an issue or I forgot how to do something. Love this course and would highly recommend it!

By Anonymized User on 10/24/2017

This course is great, it covers a lot of topics. I do not rate it as 5 stars because I thinks that many topics need some theoretical foundation, otherwise we are getting a "recipe", which is limiting. More detailed explanations as to how to interpret Apple's documentation (which is awful) would be of great help. Some lessons were edited, but have some minor failures. But again, in general, good course. Thanks a lot to Rob for sharing his knowledge !

By Hangry Itelly on 2/27/2017

Course tries to cover a lot, which is good. But not very in-depth. A lot of things are done without explaining why it's done that way. It focuses exclusively on building things with the iOS SDK, but not on core concepts or theories. You will need to learn about Object Oriented Programming, Swift syntax, and iOS architecture on your own. Luckily, I found a free online course by Stanford that addresses all my complaints! I highly recommend Stanford CS193P, which is available for free on either Youtube or iTunes U. It have been updated yearly as each new version of Xcode comes out for a good 4/5 years now! I'd say go for the Stanford course for the theory first. Then come back here to get more step by step hands on practice.

I think this course is perfect for an aspiring developer looking to put together a large body of apps for a portfolio quickly (a couple months). It's also great if you're already a developer looking to learn how to use iOS. For the aspiring developer, you'll need more than this course to learn more about the basics of code in order to pass coding challenges required at job interviews. But you'll get your foot in the door with your portfolio.

I'm a beginner to coding and this course is very helpful for me to learn. I just finished learning Flappy Birds and so far Rob has explained clearly in every course. Sometimes I still need to pause and think through some of the steps, but I think it's necessary if I want to write my own app in the future. Hope to see more courses about swift and Xcode from Rob!

By Leonard Lopatic on 1/11/2017

The course is awesome! If one really want to learn programming for iPhone, then the one should take this course! Rob, thank you for your great effort you invested in this course! Rob is great teacher - you build new knowledge based on learned one and the course shows how to learn from errors which are normal in programming - Rob solves naturally produced errors and from this we can profit a lot! Best Regards and Big Thanks, Rob!

Excellent instructor. Covered a lot of ground very clearly. Didn't give five starts because there are a few problems toward the end with material--especially on iOS 10--not being fully integrated. Also a few problems arising because he was using the beta version and things have changed subsequently. One topic I would have liked to see is how to rename projects. Many of my projects are called ParseStarterProject-Swift. I've googled how to change the title and managed to do it, but if I had practised it a few times during this course, I'd have a better chance of remembering the steps in the future.

By Oscar Sandoval on 11/26/2016

Covers all the basics and is learnable even from someone who has been coding for less than a month coming in. He delivers the perfect mix of practice and lecture. My only complaint is as an advanced beginner who had already dipped my toes into the more advanced Stanford course on youtube, I noticed certain things he did that would be considered bad practice, and the fact that he never even mentioned them makes me wonder what other things he skipped over that I myself am unaware of but are important to know. It would have been nice to have been at least told "On a production app you would want to do xyz, we don't have time togo into it but you can look it up for yourself if your interested."

By Bas Yuksel on 10/21/2016

I have progressed to 50% of Rob's iOS8 course in a week, which became impossible because the technology had changed and was outdated, I went on to iOS9 where I reached to 50% again and could not progress because technology had changed outside the instructor's influence. I released my first app on the AppStore and began the iOS10 and Xcode 8 course as they were released by this time (2 weeks after I started the iOS8 course). iOS 10 course took me about 8 weeks, but that's considering I developed the app projects myself by googling and debugging for days. Rob is a teacher by profession, so these courses are much better from a cognitive standpoint if you compare them to courses from an instructor who knows the topic really well, but can't communicate it. The way Rob challenges you to work everything out by yourself in the beginning of each video, and resumes a few seconds later for those who want to watch him do it, has challenged me to create almost all clone-app projects in this course by myself. My app looked different, my algorithms differed from his (not always for the better) but this way I LEARNED much better than I could have just by watching the instructor code and parroting his lines. The Uber Clone app which takes Rob a few hours to teach you in videos, took me 3 days to build, code, and debug. It took many visits to google, stackoverflow and my course notes for this course, but I did it all by myself. The Snapchat, Tinder (had to learn how to swipe from Rob, as it was new information), Instagram clones all took about 2 days to develop, build, code, debug. It's important that you try to do things yourself if you want to LEARN in this course. If you just watch him and type the same things; you will forget everything in a few days and won't have learned anything. If you try to do things yourselves; you will really learn and start developing your own apps before the course even ends! One other thing you should do is: for each topic, open up a new Notes file, and copy paste there the api, or few lines of code required to , say, set up a mapview, dismiss the keyboard, how to save an object on the parse server, how to get data from server etc.. That way, even if you forget the exact syntax, you will be able to open your course notes and look at them. Also prepare some function templates to: display an activity indicator, to pop up an alert etc, that way you can just copy paste those in your new projects and not have to run into errors trying to write such routine code from scratch. The rest is just algorithm, logic, common sense, and figuring out how to edit your code so that it works the way you want it to work. By getting this course, an iOS environment, hundreds of cups of coffee and free time; you will certainly start releasing simple apps on the appstore in 2 weeks, and be able to release the most complex apps at the end of the course. Just have some ideas; Rob will teach you how to get from A point to the B point. Good luck!

By Matt Osak on 10/5/2016

Excellent Course A well presented and structured course. The pace of learning was just right with the right attention to detail. The easy going and 'loose' presentation style kept me relaxed and motivated throughout the whole course. I would like to thank Rob for his professional presentation and being able to get over their vast knowledge.
