I'm a best selling author on Amazon for "How to Draw Awesome Figures."
I studied art at different schools, one of them being a community college in San Jose, Ca. Over the years, subjects in art finally clicked. I teach these subjects in ways that make it easy to grasp. It's hard to brag about myself, but students have written me emails saying how they have learned more from me than they did in art schools, art schools such as Academy of Arts in San Franscico. That blew my mind because it's supposed to be a great school.
I also sell abstract paintings that I painted while meditating. A recent painting sold for $10,963. If enough art students ask, I will make a course on how to abstract paint. You can see my paintings at saatchiArt
I'm also a writer that has sold novels.

Well i was not able to draw gestures before this even after watching youtube tutorials didnt know where i was going wrong but neil went literally basic and broke it down as to how to literallly draw gestures for beginners. I dont know but neils tutorial worked for me even after a lot of youtube tutorials didnt do it for me since i am a beginner in gesture drawing. I am able to draw gestues after this. I was even able to deconstruct comic poses of wolverine draw basic gestures and then had cylinders and shapes and then draw the anatomy and it was very fast because of the gesture drawing. Thank you Neil!!

I didn't know much about gesture drawing, and I thought this course was pretty good at explaining it. I think I got the basics, and though I will probably follow up through other gesture courses to hone my knowledge, I think this is a good starting point, especially with the relatively short length. The only thing I would say is I wish there was more examples of straight line gestures/explaining when to use the three main kinds of gesture lines, but overall, I was satisfied with this course!

I completed the course. Learn a whole new way of looking at Gestures differently from traditional drawing lesson that draws what we see from object outline. i completed the entire course. was able to draw gesture within 1mins to 2mins at the end of the course. At end of course i was already able to gauge the gesture very quickly and decide how to approach the drawing. At the end of the course I am able to do a realistic gesture posture very fast < 1 minute , something I thought I would never be able to do at my current level. Thanks for creating this create course!

I FIND IT TECHNICALLY A LITTLE POOR, ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO THE ANATOMY COURSE BY THE SAME INSTRUCTOR. iT IS NOT THAT I MIND THE HAND DRAWING, WHICH IS OF COURSE SUITABLE TO THE SUBJECT MATTER. HOWEVER, THE LIGHTING IS NOT GREAT AND THE CLARITY OF THE (OTHERWISE EXCELLENT) SAMPLE PHOTOS PLUS THEIR SMALL SIZE MADE IT CHALLENGING AND SOMEWHAT FRUSTRATING. COURSE CONTENT IS AGAIN EXCELLENT. I HAVE JUST FINISHED THE COURSE, AND DID ALL THE EXERCISES AS DESCRIBED. AM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE IMPROVEMENT IN MY DRAWING, WITH THIS COURSE BUILDING ON THE EXHAUSTIVE EXAMINATION OF ANATOMY BY THE SAME INSTRUCTOR. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I am new to drawing, especially drawing the human form. From looking for information online I realized I did not just need to understand anatomy, but also the overall flow of a person's form. That is why I wanted a course on gesture drawing. Neil's course was both informative and fun to watch. I learned a lot and I am now going back to practice all the assignments and I already feel my skills are improving. Thanks for the great course Neil!

If I were a teenager trying to draw comics then this might be the best course for me. I DID learn some strategy and techniques to take to my figure drawing group but this was despite the delivery and the production. It was hard to see the figures and with out resources it was hard to work along. The instructor seems manic and, while he is good at this it felt to me that he has a hard time explaining the process. Art is a very internal process and sometimes the people who have natural abilities have difficulty cuing students. Also this was very repetitive and the last two lectures were him doing poses and complaining about having talked too long about it. Also, at one point the instructor makes some noises that could, anad should, have been edited out.

I really enjoyed this course! I have almost every gesture drawing tutorial series out there, and I feel this one is probably one of the best out there. With other courses, gesture drawing is one component of a larger figure drawing course, and the gesture drawing component is often emphasized as being the "beginning and the end", yet it seems to be given a very short explanation, or lots of drawing without enough explanation, etc. Many courses take a more "fine art" approach, and this sometimes can be confusing, because if you watch 10 different teachers, they'll give you 10 different ways to do gesture drawing. Neil shows you three different ways you can capture a pose, and then he shows you how you can use them in combination to better capture the gesture. One thing that Neil's course does that many of the others don't is he shows you how to go beyond capturing the gesture and how you can experiment with using other curves to exaggerate or outright change the pose. He might give you the very simple suggestion of changing a C curve to an S curve to see how it changes the feeling of the pose. It's nice to see how a simple suggestion such as this can give you more freedom. No other course I have does this. A lot of courses really try to focus on capturing the single gesture, whereas this course shows you how to experiment and "play jazz" with multiple gestures, how to use mirroring gestures and contrasting gestures, experimenting with gestures between two people, and how you can change or improve a pose by altering the gesture to create a better composition. All in all this is a great course, and I feel that, as long as you put in the "flight time", you will see immediate improvement.

Great instructor. You can really see his passion and joy for the subject. My gesture sketching improved dramatically after this course and I have much more confidence now in this part of my art. My only criticism would be that at times you couldn't see the lines he was drawing when he was lightly sketching with pencil and paper and it might have been nice if he provided the gestures he wanted us to draw during the exercises so he could be sure we all got the basics down at each step along the way.

I enjoy the way Neil teaches and have purchased many if not all of his Udemy courses. I always learn something and he has definitely done his homework on his topics. However his draftsmanship never seems to be at a level of mastery that allows you to feel like you are learning from someone speaking on the topics with total confidence. I would say great for the beginner but more experienced artists may want to look elsewhere.
