Our take
Based on the ratings of 3,750 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
Rajiv Narang's bass course is a ten hour, 138 lecture program that runs from the fundamentals up to playing over chord charts. It is built as four parts with practice modules and a riff trainer in between, and the pitch is technique plus theory rather than songs. The audience list says so outright: if you want to learn specific riffs, look elsewhere. With about 28,000 students and 3,750 reviews at a 4.7 rating, it is the one bass option in a category otherwise filled with guitar courses on our site, and it suits a beginner or returning player who wants to understand why a bass line works, not just copy it.
Reviewers keep coming back to the teaching. Rajiv gets called calm, clear and good at breaking things down, and one reviewer says he learned more theory here in three months than from two years of books. One student likes that reading staff notation gets covered too. The complaints are consistent. The music is shown in standard notation rather than bass clef. The camera sometimes sits too far from the fretting hand. A few low-star reviews feel the balance tips too far toward theory, with practice exercises dropped in without much setup and no chord diagrams to lean on. One reviewer found the early sections shorter and shallower than expected.
The course was last refreshed in July 2024 and reviews were still coming in through 2026. Value depends on what you want. If the goal is a working knowledge of the fretboard, keys and triads, plus habits that won't need undoing later, the reviews suggest it delivers. If the goal is playing songs by the weekend, the pace will frustrate. Pair it with your own song practice and it's an easy recommendation.
Pros
- Rajiv explains theory in plain terms; one reviewer says it clicked faster than books did
- Practice modules and a riff trainer sit between the four parts so theory gets applied
- Covers reading standard notation alongside playing, a bonus one reviewer singled out
- Updated July 2024 and holds a 4.7 from about 3,750 reviews
Cons
- Music is shown in standard notation, not bass clef, which annoys some players
- Camera is sometimes too far from the fretting hand to see finger placement
- Theory-heavy; a few low-star reviews want more hand exercises and chord diagrams
I must say I made a bigger progress during this course in 3 months than over last 2 years. I can fully recommend it.
Marked all levels, but it really starts from zero; experienced players can skim Part 1 and gain most from the later theory.

Well structured course and I feel like I'm learning farely fast. I'm leaving the one star out of it due to Udemy's mobile app not being as easy to navigate between course videos and its resources, as it is in a desktop web browser. But it has nothing to do with the quality of lessons. Lessons are great here

Rajiv is an outstanding teacher—genuinely warm, deeply professional, and exceptionally skilled. The course is thoughtfully structured, with theoretical concepts seamlessly integrated into practical workshops that truly anchor the material and make it musically playable. It stands out as one of the finest music courses available on the market today. I wholeheartedly recommend it without reservation. Who is this course for? It’s for anyone seeking a foundational and holistic understanding of music. For aspiring bass players. For guitarists who long to go beyond chords and scales and truly make music. In my case, it has profoundly improved my guitar playing and enriched my musical expression. Rajiv, thank you! Seeing you each day and experiencing your kind, joyful, and generous approach to teaching and making music is a true gift. With deepest gratitude and warm regards from Germany— thank you, Rajiv! Update 2026: This course is truly world-class. It is extremely valuable from a teaching perspective and so logically, clearly and musically structured that everyone can learn from it — from beginners to professionals. Thanks to Rajiv, I was able to fulfill my dream of playing in a band. This is exactly the kind of teacher and the kind of course you are looking for: clear, motivating, musical and absolutely practical. This is the only course you really need. Rajiv thank you so much!

Thank you, Rajiv!! I really enjoyed working through this course. I look forward to working through your music theory course next - The elements of Music theory and foundations. thanks for being my first teacher! It's been amazing to grow and progress from picking up bass 9 months ago and am excited to see where this instrument takes me.

Being a bit sceptic at the beginning I must say it's the first multimedia bass course that helped me to understand the music foundation much more than books. Rajiv has a gift of coaching and motivating and influenced me practicing triads, keys and having fun almost every day. I must say I made a bigger progress during this course in 3 months than over last 2 years. I can fully recommend it. I wish to find a similar approach of learning to know how to play from notes.

I’ve been playing bass for 12 years now and am blown away by how well Rajiv teaches the instrument. I have not finished the course yet but I have learned more in the past few months than I have in years of being self taught. If you are just starting out on the bass, you would be doing yourself a huge disservice by not taking this course. Thank a lot for putting this together Rajiv!
By Alberto Radicati on 7/11/2020
Rajiv is the best teacher I could hope to get. The course spans over the whole set of knowledge needed to set your bass playing to the next level. I will and I already am making treasure of every single minute spent watching and practicing with this course. Thanks a lot for everything, I really, really enjoyed!

I had a great experience taking in and absorbing this course by Rajiv. In my opinion, he is a fantastic instructor with great attention to detail and structured the course very well. There are also play along lessons along the way which cater to a beginner. Almost all aspects of bass playing(all styles ranging from funk to jazz)are covered ranging from scales to modes, time signatures and finger exercises. Theory is very well explained in a clear and coherent manner. I have no hesitation in recommending this course to anyone looking seriously get into bass playing ! Many thanks Rajiv. Sincerely, Vidyashankar

Hi Rajiv, I would like to thank Udemy for bringing an expert like you to teach Bass. All videos and presentation were flawless. I have also made notes with diagrams of scales. Sliding tips, adding colors to existing pentatonics and triads worth indeed. Hope I would see myself reaching my goal soon in playing Bass.

As someone relatively new to playing bass I found parts of this course difficult to keep up with and I've replayed some of the clips several times. I would have preferred more explanations and demonstrations but I feel the course moves on from one thing to the next rather quickly. If you're someone who already has some musical theory knowledge and is looking for to go deeper I imagine this would be a great course, but as a beginner/intermediate I've had difficulty progressing beyond 40%. Perhaps a course aimed more at beginners would be beneficial and something I'd find more helpful. Thanks!
