first off, I am very far from being a beginner, I have been a guitarist and keyboard player for 30 years and published one album and have a second one out soon, so I already know how to compose music, however of course 'composing music' doesn't necessarily mean compose ANY music. This is an excellent, step by step course that explains complex concepts simply. I'd leave 5 stars but do not for the following reasons: 1. there's not enough examples, for example for the minuet and trio, there's absolutely none. 2. many other instructors on udemy will post the slides so that the course can be reviewed quickly, this one does not. 3. there's absolutely no mention about harmony. You can hardly write anything without having a solid grasp of harmony, let alone a symphony. I have studied all tonal harmony until the augmented sixth or so, so for me the lacking of this in this course isn't much of a problem, however it would be nice to have some more explanations than 'this section starts on the dominant'. I can change this rating later as I am only a third in the course, and obviously if the material above should be included, then I'll change it to 5 stars. This course is an interesting one although it sits weirdly between the beginner and non beginner: the examples are definitely not advanced, but writing a symphony is certainly not for beginners. One HUGE strenght of this course is that the tutor shows very specific practice activities for orchestration! so this is perfect for someone like me who always wrote only for rock and pop band. A great course with some (not major) rough edges.......with a bit of tweaking it could become a great one.

Not lot new things to me but all is teachead clearly. but gived few ideas also makes me stronger trust my own skillset what is good thing. Is more beginner course what i expected started so bottom but good i think if you not know much music theory. i dont know lot but many things are not new to me.

I thought the workflow presentation was very usefull in tackling such a monumental task. I hope to use your organisational methods in the future. My only suggestion to the course would be to present section 14 "Symphony Overview" first , as a reference to all of the compostional task being taught. This would help show the context of the taught material to the end product.

Excellent overview on how to write any complex music not just the Symphony. Its a huge topic and people spend decades to master the art of music composition. This course managed to squeeze all important parts you need to know for music composition with very useful information, resources and practical exercises. Really great foundation for any beginner to intermediate music composer.

I am loving it. As a newbie with no formal music education this course has turned out to be a great find. Before this notes on the sheet used to seem complex and confusing. All that has changed now. Not only can I recognize why a note is where it is but also explore and experiment to bring nuance to existing melodies. This is when I have not even reached the half way mark in the course. Many thanks for this very learner friendly course.

This course is a step by step account of how to compose your own symphony using a free software that will actually play your symphony for you (with multiple instruments). Rajiv shows us how to compose our symphony in a detailed step by step process, while using the software, so you also get a tutorial for using the software which I have found extremely helpful. In addition to the tutorials and demonstrations detailing how to compose music there are also lots of practice modules where Rajiv will do an example and suggest that we then go and do the activity. I am not a student of classical music but I do write my own songs in the pop/rock genre. I do however appreciate classical music and I enjoy spotting melodies from my favourite movements when they appear in modern music e.g. Pathetique in a Billy Joel song and Cannon in D (just about everywhere!). This appearance of fragments from classical pices in pop and rock etc. has lead me to think about how I construct melodies for my own songs. To be honest, the answer is very badly. I needed help.... Wow! This course is the help that I needed! It not only addresses motifs and melody but also other important aspects of composition that I had never given any thought to before and have not come across in any other songwriting courses that I have taken. Rajiv is a very talented composer and watching the creative process is both interesting and informative. Rajiv is also a really nice guy who has written generously long answers to my questions on his other courses (which I also highly recommended). If you have any interest at all in writing any kind of music or understanding classical music then I am sure you will benefit greatly from taking this course. I wish that I could give this course more than 5 stars, if anyone ever finds out how to do it please let me know :)

The course is really excellent so far. I enjoy the instructor's methodical step by step method for creating music. Complex ideas are presented clearly and thoughtfully. I'm also taking his music theory course, which is equally wonderful and informative. In my opinion Rajiv also has the perfect voice for teaching - reflecting a calmness, kindness and gentleness of spirit that make his courses even more enjoyable.

As the course develops it revisits concepts and explains them in greater detail. The exercises at the start of the course are helpful for beginners at understanding the basics of notation software. I can't wait to finally finish a musical piece!

Write Your Symphony Now! The Elements of Music Composition is an outstanding course. The adventure of listening to the individual notes as they are played, then arranged into the melodies and motifs, and finally the orchestration process of blending the individual instruments into one unified whole, is an amazing experience. The Symphony Overview fills the air with exquisite and uplifting sounds. This course is exceptional for musicians who wish to study and apply the lessons in their creative work of symphony composition and also for lifelong learners who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the process of creating great symphonies. Thank you, Rajiv, for creating another great course.
