Learn (hands-on) to create complete PLC and HMI solutions from absolute zero in TIA Portal.
Created by: Paul Lynn
Last updated July 2025
What you will learn
- By the end of this course, you will be able to program Siemens PLCs using ALL of the IEC programming languages supported in TIA Portal.
- You will know how to create complete HMI projects using WinCC RT Professional.
- At your next interview, you'll be able to bring your laptop with a fully functional PLC program and HMI both running live to actually demonstrate everything you've learned in this course (which will be quite a lot).

Course Description
By now, you already know the basics. You know what digital and analog signals are. You know what "PLC" and "HMI" mean. You know what an INT and a BOOL and a FLOAT are. As long as you're at LEAST that far, you'll be able to handle this course. If you aren't quite there yet, I strongly recommend you check out my first PLC programming course which teaches from the most elementary fundamentals all the way up to creating complete solutions with best practices.
For those of you who are still here and think you're ready, you're about to learn Siemens PLC and HMI programming end-to-end and top-to-bottom. There will be some familiar info covered such as alarm programming and HOAs, but we aren't going remedial here. Most of the focus will be on creating a complete program for a theoretical system and doing so with LAD, FBD, SCL, STL and GRAPH programming paradigms. If you've already completed my PLC IV course, this should be a piece of cake.
But no PLC is complete without an HMI, right? No worries! We're getting into all of that as well and best of all - you'll be able to follow along in your own (fully-functional 21-day trial version) copy of the software. So you'll be creating PLC programs, creating HMI projects, simulating both and making them talk to each other. It's everything you need and want to develop a HIGH comfort level with Siemens technology!
For those of you who might not think you're ready, you can always take a look at my other PLC programming courses.
What's covered in each of the five PLC courses I teach here and on my own PLC Dojo site?
PLC Fundamentals (Level 1) teaches you how to program with the focus on ladder logic, which is the most popular PLC programming language. The goal is to teach you everything you need to know to make a PLC do what you want it to do. You are also given all the software necessary to both CREATE and RUN your own programs live - right on your own computer.
Applied Logic (Level 2) forces you to take what you've learned and solve problem after progressively harder problem unassisted. You get a spec and are told simply: "Make it work, and don't progress until you have." After, you get to watch me solve each one as well. By the end, you don't just know how to program - you are a PROGRAMMER.
Process Visualization (Level 3) gives you both knowledge and experience in FIVE different HMI / SCADA development environments. By the end, you've created several COMPLETE visualization (screen) projects that you can actually run on your own computer (and SHOW PEOPLE in an interview) with no additional hardware.
IEC Paradigms (Level 4) is only for the heavyweights. This course teaches you how to program using all five IEC programming languages (plus one more) in multiple environments. There are projects as well, so by the end, you have seen it all and DONE it all as well. There won't be anything anybody can show you that you won't already be familiar with.
TIA Portal Master Project (Level 5) is the culmination of everything. In that course, you'll program an entire power plant using all five PLC programming languages (in PARALLEL!) with a full HMI. It's a massive and complex project that really showcases your talents in an interview!

Paul Lynn
My PLC courses cost LESS on PLC Dojo.
By degree, I'm an MBA, however after a few years on the road full-time as a management consultant, I fell into and in love with engineering.
My PLC / HMI experience includes projects from $10k up to about $40m, primarily within the realm of chemical processing and filtration. I am competent programming Rockwell, Siemens and a handful of smaller technologies.
I've also had the pleasure of designing most of the same systems I used to program. My competencies in this area include full design, 3D modeling and drafting of assembly and fabrication drawings in AutoCAD and / or Inventor. I've designed mobile systems that were built in shipping containers up to one that filled a two-story building.
Before engineering, I developed and implemented CI (Continuous Improvement) management systems in companies across America in various industries to include a military finance organization, a printing company, a mortgage bank, a candy factory (my personal favorite), a nuclear products manufacturer, a major producer of coiled aluminum and several more.
So as not to only be useful in a factory or an office, I'm also hold the following NASM certifications: Certified Nutrition Coach, Certified Personal Trainer, Weight Loss Specialist and Behavior Change Specialist. And yes - I have a full gym where my living room should be.

awesome! I salute this course. The course gives a good experience how to program a same project in four different PLC programming languages. The course is well explained and clear. Paul Lynn! you are amazing instructor. I very much enjoyed this course and would definitely recommend it to future students.

I learned so much in this course. Paul has a great way of teaching and there is no such thing better than putting our hands on a project to make it from scratch and to learn a lot from it. Thanks Paul for this great course. I will certainly take the other PLC courses to improve my knowledge and to learn best practices in this PLC programming world.

This course is great! The Instructor is cool, clear and well knowledgeable and I think like it when I see Mr. Lynn code as he instructs;making mistakes and correcting them is interesting because this is really what happens in the programming environment. Big thanks to Paul Lynn for creating another wonderful and easy to follow PLC course

The course does explain many things by which you can start programming. And once you are out there in industry you need to educate yourself about following standards and updating documents. I did have a small expectation of PLC is communication via Modbus, But that will be completely another topic. I can totally recommend this course for anyone who wishes to program a Siemens PLC.

what i can say about this course briefly , it is really very useful and helpful to be professional SIEMENS programmer , this course helped me to get a job with a international company in the Netherlands as PLC engineer . thanks Paul you are one of the best instructor i have ever met online , your method is really interesting and attractive .

Good if it focused on actually finishing the project and actually making it work. The scope included PID's and I was really hoping to see it work until the end. Finishing this course did taught me a lot of things, but a lot of it were jumps from on error to another. For me, this is frustrating since I was really hoping to learn more from my own mistakes not from the instructor's. I really felt lost in the later part while trying to make my program work. I just wish there were less bugs and that the final project actually worked. Thank you for the links for the downloads and for all your effort in trying to train beginner like me.

Paul always does a great job in his courses. He is the original PLC instructor on Udemy and IMO, the best. Now there are so many courses to choose from but his give you so much more practical information, in a real world way. After I took PLC1 I asked him about a Siemens course so I'm glad he put one together, it's great!

This is the best course for beginners who really want to work on Siemens plc. worth knowledge with very less amount. Before I had TIA portal but my simulator was not working but now with his installation guidelines it is working fine. Pretty happy and satisfied and really recommend for this course.

I am glad that he finally touch this subject. I knew from his previous courses that he is a great teacher and he will do his best to make us learn necessary skills for the future use. I just wished that he started with one language (LAD or FBD) to finish the PLC part so that the students can follow the flow of the program easier. Then he come back to deal with other paradigms to avoid so much jumping. In any case, I have to say thank you to him for his offer of this course.
