Course Description

The belief that there are fundamental and universal differences between the sexes is a popular one. But it’s a belief that lacks scientific backing and one that continues to underpin gender inequality and discrimination, both in the workplace and in society. This course looks at the nature of gender bias, how it affects both individuals and organisations and what we can do to reduce its impact on our relationships and decision-making.

Studies have shown that contrary to popular stereotypes, there are no differences at all in terms of women’s and men’s cognitive abilities. What’s more, the gendered roles that today appear immutable have not always been so - history tells us that prior to the industrial revolution, men and women performed a wide range of mutually interchangeable roles, and that even 100 years ago, jobs that today are seen as typically ‘female’ were done almost exclusively by men. Yet today’s workplace remains hampered by perceptions of gender-specific roles and broadly accepted ‘norms’ of gender behaviour, and organisations and individuals are suffering as a result.

In this course from Skill Boosters, Professor Binna Kandola and Dr Jo Kandola explain how today’s gender inequality stems not from biology and evolution but from artificial social constructs and show how challenging gender bias and dismantling gender stereotypes can deliver huge benefits at both an individual and organisational level.

This course looks at:

  • Why we carry around gender stereotypes and how they affect us
  • The impact of gender bias in the workplace and the business case for tackling it
  • Why addressing our bias helps us to assess people’s strengths, skills and potential more objectively and ensure that we recruit, retain and advance the best people
  • How to make sure that the decisions that we make are well-informed, fair and sustainable
  • Practical techniques for identifying and addressing bias at an individual and organisational level

It would be nice to know who the speakers are and what their credentials are to be speaking to the topic of gender in the workplace. Unless I completely missed it, the topic in Quiz #1 question #1 was not covered until the following module: 4. Workplace Stereotypes.

A lot of this is stuff I know already, although some of the historical information was interesting. However, the comment about female-named hurricanes is seriously dubious; please look it up on the Snopes website for a great discussion about the validity of that particular experiment. I would have liked more information on how to take steps to get past gender bias and improve an organisation's chances of recruiting and retaining a good gender balance of staff.

Had technical problems several times during this course, program would not stop on some of the responses while I was trying to complete quiz, program would stop in the middle of the course on a working clock and not advance in the course and finally error message came up saying OOps, error try again later. While I really like the content of course the program needs technical assistance to operate as expected.

Yes, it was a good match for me. It challenged my stereotypes of gender which was a good thing. it brought it to my attention and I believe changed my outlook and how I think about gender. Good course. Also, I learned a great deal more through the examples set forth in the second part.

i learn to understand the bias in workplace due to Gender differences and so know how to identify the stereotypes. The instructors are so helpful and clear with the explanation and love the notes for each section. it really summarize the whole course. great learning indeed..:)

Treats gender as a "fixed variable" with only two possible values -- male and female. This is now regarded as old-fashioned thinking. Gender should be regarded as a fluid variable, with "shades of gray" in between male and female. Course needs to be updated.

Indeed very enlightening course and glad the course is out there. First step to change is awareness that such biases exist. And we need to reflect upon our own biases though it is super difficult to acknowledge.

In my opinion, it truly does identify the bias in both male and female genders and how we continue to stereo type each other. Makes me more aware of how I too continue with these old conditioning patterns.

By Anonymized User on 3/6/2018

learning on gender biases that date back to the 1600s and the unconscious ways we relate gender biased perspectives for certain titles/jobs has been quite eye opening. I have taken that knowledge and will try to be more aware on these types of scenarios when in the workplace and outside of the workplace.

I liked the way the course and the ideas are organized and presented. Some of the scenario enactments made the ideas more concrete, tangible and easier to grasp. More importantly, this course gave me an opportunity to introspect my own beliefs and re-evaluate by outlook. Thank you.
