Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,804 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short, focused course on the tool almost every JavaScript developer uses without really understanding. Bogdan Stashchuk walks through initializing a project, installing dependencies, the difference between dependencies and devDependencies, semantic versioning, package-lock.json, and how npm scripts and executables work under the hood. At 2.3 hours across 41 lectures it is closer to a dense tutorial than a full course, and the syllabus backs that up: nine sections, each covering one specific piece of the npm puzzle.
Reviewers consistently say it clears up confusion they had been carrying around for years, praising how clearly concepts like semantic versioning and dependency management are explained. The complaints cluster around depth and delivery: a few students wanted more real-world examples (when an update breaks a bigger project, how npm-run-all actually helps versus just chaining commands with &&), and more than one mentioned Stashchuk's accent making certain sections hard to follow without captions. Peer dependencies are never covered, and Webpack gets hinted at during lectures but never really lands.
For a paid course this short, the value comes from how targeted it is. It sits well as a companion to a broader Node.js or JavaScript course rather than a replacement for one, since it assumes basic JavaScript familiarity and does not touch coding exercises or quizzes. Recently updated content helps here. Students who want the fundamentals of npm explained clearly and quickly should be satisfied; anyone chasing advanced dependency resolution or bundler config should look elsewhere.
Pros
- Covers package-lock.json, semantic versioning, and scripts in 2.3 focused hours
- Reviewers say it removed years of confusion about how npm actually works
- Recently refreshed content as of March 2026
- Multiple reviewers praise the explanations as clear and easy to follow
Cons
- Short on real-world examples, especially around dependency conflicts in bigger projects
- Peer dependencies aren't covered, and Webpack is hinted at but never explained
- Some students note the instructor's accent makes captions necessary
I am very thankful for this course. I used to have lots of questions while using NPM and used to be intimidated by it. Not anymore, after completing this course!
Listed as All Levels but really suits developers with some JavaScript background who want npm fundamentals explained, not total beginners.

Course Description
In this course I will explain you what is NPM and how it is used.
This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of NPM, the Node.js package manager. Students will learn how to use NPM to manage Node.js packages and create their own packages.
The course begins with an overview of NPM and its role in the Node.js ecosystem. Students will learn how to install and configure NPM, including setting up a new Node.js project and managing project dependencies using NPM.
The course then dives into more advanced NPM features, including package versioning and semantic versioning.
Throughout the course, students will gain hands-on experience working with NPM through a series of practical exercises and labs. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of NPM and be able to effectively manage Node.js packages in real-world scenarios.
Learning Objectives:
Understand NPM and its role in the Node.js ecosystem
Install and configure NPM and create a new Node.js project
Manage project dependencies using NPM
You will learn how to initialize new project, how to install new dependencies and explore their child dependencies.
We will also discuss what is Semantic Versioning and what Major, Minor and Patch versions mean.
You will also understand what is the purpose of the package-lock.json file.
I will explain you what is the purpose of the NPM scripts and how they should be used. We will talk about built-in NPM scripts and custom script. Also we will combine several NPM scripts in a one using npm-run-all external package.
You will understand what is executable script and what is the purpose of the .bin folder in the node_modules folder. I will explain you what is shebang line and how it is used on the Unix-based system and on Windows.
After this course you will gain a deep knowledge about NPM and learn how to use it on practice.

Excellent course. This is another gem from Bogdan in which he has taken pains to explains how npm works and what it is all about. This course also has exercises which I found it useful. This is the go-to course for understanding npm.

I definitely learned some things I never knew before and that's great. But if I am being 100% honest, there is a little bit of a language barrier that causes me to not fully understand the concepts. It was easier, once you provided the step by step walkthroughs. I had to go back and rewind many times and put my captions on to be able to understand things. But overall this is a solid course on understanding node packages and NPM scripts. Thank you!

I really appriciate the efforts creator has put in. Explanation is smooth but i think more examples could have been covered. Even after completing the course i'm not extremely confident to say that now i know NPM. Points: 1. Github clone and then NPM install in a different system. 2. Usecases of ~ and versions without any ^ 0r ~ 3. More examples of how an update can cause issues in bigger projects 4. I couldn't understand bin folder at all. Thanks!

I am very thankful for this course. I used to have lots of questions while using NPM and used to be intimidated by it. Not anymore, after completing this course! I feel lots of confident and can understand many things behind the scene. Yes one topic 'Webpack' which Bogdan did speak in between the section but was never addressed by him. Nevertheless it is a must course for those who wants to delve deeper into NPM .

I'm new to web development. After making simple JS/HTML/CSS web apps, I stumbled over the necessity to install JS packages with NPM. Although I know Python pretty well, NPM was unusual and confusing to me. It is where Bogdan's course helped me a lot. I should add that having little experience in web technologies, I need to find and read external materials to complement the course.

I see most of the tutorials are all about NPM commands. But I found this one very interesting as it gives internal understanding about NPM and packages and how it all work together. In this tutorial the missing parts are some NPM commands and NPM Global Packages. Otherwise this tutorial far beyond better than any others on NPM. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

My general expectations were fullfilled, however I would have also expected a more elaborate example to explain the difference between dependencies and development dependencies. It is explained only via usage of the --production flag, and that while developing for the web, it is a non issue. This is where I would expect an example of a mentioned public package. And there was no mention of the new NPX feature neither.

I enjoyed the course which was full of new and interesting info. I just love to know about things we often us, but don't give too much attention to. Also, Bogdan is very responsive and helps out in the Q&A which is huge! Thumbs up.

I haven't seen much of this course yet. But the content is so good so far that I feel comfortable giving a high rating. The author is very thorough in explaining the details. He's answered a huge number of questions that I've had already. I'm more than happy with the course so far. UPDATE: After finishing with the course I can confirm that the instructor did a great job! I have a much better understanding of NPM having gone through the course. The topics were covered in good detail. The lectures were short and to the point and helped me to quickly grasp each concept along with practicing the ideas in such a way that made me think a bit. I'm more than happy with the time and effort I spent here. Thank you for your help Bogdan!

Great course. It cemented my prior knowledge of npm, and taught me some new things. With so many courses to choose from on Udemy, I consider this course time well spent. I will take more courses from this same instructor Bogdan Stashchuk, beginning with his JavaScript and ES6 Challenges course. I would be interested in future courses from Bogdan on Node.js APIs and internals, and Git (command line).
