Course Description
UPDATE:
In this course we tackle some intermediate topics like AI and we code it in a way that you can reuse it - which also can be a bit more difficult for beginners. The course is about creating the 2d shooting mechanic and polishing it with multiple special effects for it to be fun to play. We will create a simple AI system for the enemy using FSM, create custom Shaders, and explore why it is important for others to playtest your games and give you feedback.
Course should work with changes done to Shader Graph in version Unity 2020.
UPDATE 2:
Full project files in zip archive added to each section at the end.
Each video where we write some code now has a link to scripts on github.
Introduction:
Let's make a 2d top-down shooter in Unity 2020 using universal Rendering Pipeline and focusing on juiciness of the gameplay!
In this course beside implementing a standard game mechanics like shooting, picking up health/ammo and enemy AI we will focus our attention on adding visual and audio details into our game. URP will helps us a lot with its 2D lights system and the Shader Graph Editor which makes creating shaders (how game graphic is rendered) really easy.
While it is important to have bug free game mechanics that fits our game genre we also want to make our game stand out. Our goal is to make the game fun to the players and it is achieved only by balancing our game and making sure that our player knows exactly what is going on in the game. In this course we will focus on the latter.
Feedback is the main path that we as game designers have to communicate to the player what is going on inside the game. To make sure that our player feels like his / her actions influence the game world (Agency) we will make sure to give every action appropriate visual and audio queue. An example would be that shooting will cause the screen to shake, enemies on being hit flash and are knocked back, bullet that hits a wall will produce ricochet sound and a cloud of dust - in summary the player will hopefully have fun playing our game.
We will implement custom shaders, animations, tweens (animations using code - DoTween asset and inbuilt Coroutins), audio effects and light effects. in addition we will stricture the project in a way that you can easily balance the game by exposing important settings/values using ScriptableObjects.
To create the project we will utilize UnityEvents to make sure that we can easily add new actions to the events happening in the game from Unity inspector instead of having to modify out code. I will do my best to show you how to write object oriented, clean code so that you can easily understand it.
I encourage you to check out the free video about the outline of the course to learn more.
See you in the course!

I'm Peter
I am a game developer creating games and prototypes in Unity since 2017 :)
I love programming (started learning as a kid) and playing games. That is why I started creating games
I share my knowledge about coding in C# and creating game mechanics in Unity at Sunny Valley Studio YT channel and in my video courses.
I am also part of Unity insiders program so that I can bring you up-to-date solutions to how to implement different game mechanics in Unity
My goal is to make learning programming and making games easy by explaining everything in a step-by-step manner, breaking it into small manageable chunks of knowledge.
I know that learning to code can be hard. At the same time creating games is a very much iterative process which means that new features needs to be added to the code. I want to show you how you can evolve your code and your unity project so that it is easy to work on it and so that if something break you can quickly fix it. Yes it will require you learning how to code well. But I tell you it will be worth it (and a time saver later on).

Hi, thanks for making this course. I enjoyed the videos and they also expanded my coding knowledge. I used your code as a foundation and published the final result on itch.io. Here's the link https://ian-kovacs.itch.io/guns-n-demons. I'd appreciate it if you played my game and left a comment. I would welcome your constructive criticism.

I've had several game courses taken before and this is the first time I've liked an instructor's approach to his code - clean, efficient, professional, and has strong logic. I also like the consistent usage of event driven architecture - this is not the only approach but if you go one route it's better to be consistent. There were only minor issues such as not using a global audio source (e.g. AudioSource.PlayOneShot) when playing sounds for game objects that needed to be destroyed to avoid using coroutines to wait for the audio to finish, or some other hackish approach. But overall, I really loved the course and have learned a lot. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

It is not necessary to wait until the end of the course to check that it is an excellent course, if I could I would give it 10 stars. Thank you, because I have learned so much that I have made a huge leap in my knowledge of videogames, if I had completed your course first, it would have saved me a lot of money. You have been very kind and very fast the times I contacted you No es necesario esperar hasta el final del curso para comprobar que es un curso excelente, si pudiese le daría 10 estrellas. Gracias, porque he aprendido tanto, que he dado un salto enorme en mi conocimiento de videojuegos, si hubiera llevado acabo tu curso primero me habria horrado un montón de dinero. Has sido muy amable y muy rápido las veces que contactado contigo.

Wonderful course && amazing instructor! Thank you so much for providing this tutorial. The course is very well prepared and well thought. Peter is very responsive to the students' questions and is very knowledgeable. The codes are clean and if you want to learn good coding practice, I'd definitely recommend this course to everyone. I learn a lot from taking this course. I personally think this is one of the few gem courses in Udemy. Again, thank you and I really hope to see more courses from you.

Good course overall. The explanations can be a bit hard to follow though...I think some visual diagrams would definitely help.

Excellent course. The teacher is very knowledgeable and has good coding practices. It's definetly one of the best courses on udemy that I've done. He uses different design patterns at least once, for example object pooling, and explains them in a way that you can later implement them in your own projects or for expanding this prototype. Definetly this course is not for begginers, but you'll learn a lot, and I believe that the idea is to teach how to make a nice looking prototype, fast and playable. And if you are not sure, he has a youtube channel with really nice tutorials that you can check out.

Create Course! A lot of good practice for a coder! There are very few unity courses on udemy with good code practice =( I would like more, for example, to see how to implement a system for changing weapons so that everything works fine. Or let's say how to make the main menu CORRECT, how events will behave, etc. etc. But as I understand it, such courses will be aired on this channel, I hope)

Only part way through section 3, so an early review. So far, I have learnt a lot about code re-usability as well as optimising for performance. A TDS is not a hugely complex game to make, but I took this course as I have started another of Peter's courses about writing better code and I was curious to see how that translated to this game genre. Five stars so far, as I am learning lots of new stuff!

This course has left me with mixed feelings. It is clear that the instructor is very knowledgable as he uses good coding practices throughout the project. In addition to this, the instructor uses the URP and covers a lot of topics that are necessary to continue your game dev journey, such as shader graph, 2D lighting and Scriptable Objects, which many other courses do not cover. Furthermore, the instructor is responsive within the Q&A so that when you're stuck he is there to help. However, after just completing the 'Simple Map' section, the pace of the course increases drastically and it becomes harder to follow, which often results in me just copying the code without actually understanding what is going on. I wouldn't recommend it for total beginner programmers as there are some intermediate programming concepts that are used. All in all, it is a valuable course with great nuggets of information and if you're an intermediate game developer you can learn a lot.

I learned a lot with this course and the instructor has a very good workflow and gives you a good foundation where you can easily implement new features. Bought his other courses because I really liked this one. While waiting for the rest of the course (I think it's almost complete), I continue adding my own features and enemies . Really well done! Thanks.
