Unity Real Time Strategy: Build Your Own RTS Game (Udemy.com)
Build your own RTS in Unity 6 — smart units, fog of war, dynamic upgrades, and systems that scale as big as your ideas.
Created by: GameDev.tv Team
Last updated November 2025
What you will learn
- Build your own RTS game in Unity, from units to buildings to upgrades and more.
- Design gameplay systems that scale, so your project won’t buckle as it levels up.
- Create unit AI that reacts to player input using behaviour trees (no magic, just logic).
- Set up fog of war to keep your players guessing (and scouting like pros).
- Develop a config-driven setup to add new units fast—no spaghetti code here.
- Use ScriptableObjects to organise your game like a pro dev.
- Hook up an event bus system so your units can talk without yelling across the codebase.
- Craft upgrade systems that run from the editor, not hard-coded chaos.
Course Description
Ever dreamed of making your own real time strategy game but got totally pwned by the complexity? You’re not alone. RTS games are beasts—but this course is here to help you tame 'em.
You’ll build out a full RTS from scratch—units, buildings, upgrades, fog of war, the whole lot. You even get a starter project with models and a level, so you can hit the ground running.
Wanna make your units act less like chaos goblins? You’ll build behaviour trees that respond properly to player input.
We’re talking powerful coding stuff too—event buses, ScriptableObjects, config-driven systems—big tools that make your game scalable and pro-level tidy.
Sick of hard coding every single stat or upgrade? We’ve got your back. You’ll make a fully editable system where new units and upgrades can be added in a flash.
Struggling with scaling your projects or levelling up your dev skills? This course shows you how to build smart systems from the get-go, so your game grows with you.
If you’ve already got a decent handle on Unity and C#, and you’re keen to go deeper, this course is perfect for you. RTS fans and future AI masterminds, you’re gonna love it.
You’ll need an intermediate knowledge of C# and to be comfy using the Unity Editor—but don’t worry, we’re not gonna spawn you into a boss fight with no gear. So if you get stuck, think of us as your support crew—arming you with the tools and tips to win the fight your way.
And yep, like all GameDev tv courses, you get access to our awesome forums and teaching assistants.
By the end, you won’t just have code—you’ll have the bones of your very own RTS game.
So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get building!

This course is very comprehensive and I am enjoying it. it is not for beginners! You should have completed a comprehensive Unity course or maybe even 3 courses before starting this course. Much of the code is not beginner friendly. However, there is a real lack of higher level Unity classes , so this class is perfect in my opinion.

I really enjoyed the course, to be honest. It's the first time I've done anything in Unity, and I wanted it to be an RTS because it's one of my favorite genres. Chris makes it very easy to learn because he teaches very well and includes challenges in every video to make you think and process each lesson. If I had to say anything negative, I'd say that the fog of war section is very straightforward and doesn't explain the reasoning behind each part of the process very well; and also that there's nothing about enemy AI in the course, but I understand this last point (and Chris explains it at the end too) because it would be a separate course, which I hope they make. Everything else is great.

Great course, which has definitely exceeded my expectations. The instructor is always providing explanations where it matters, and overall the codebase is very well structured. I've definitely learned a thing or two when it comes to programming patterns. The course is also up-to-date, introducing newly released packages such as the Behavior system from Unity. Obviously, topics such as AI and Multiplayer are out of scope, but considering the complexity of a RTS - which isn't a trivial gameloop - and the duration of the course, I don't see how it could have been covered. On tiny bit of criticism; Imo the UI could have been implemented better, especially when it comes to responsiveness. But this is an intermediary/advanced course and students should already be able to explore on their own. Again, this course and the instructor focus on what really matters.

I’m only just starting the third section, but as a senior dev looking to branch into this style of game development, I find the pacing to be spot on. The lectures include challenges that range from quick wins to more complex problems. For me, these are the highlight of the course; they force me to really digest the material rather than just watching passively. Successfully implementing a solution on my own creates a great feedback loop that builds my confidence in the subject matter. I’m already feeling inspired to add my own features to the project, and I’d highly recommend this to anyone interested in diving into the RTS genre. Will update this review as I progress through the course.

This is one of the few Unity courses I've taken that claims to be intermediate and actual is. It's a good thing and at times will really stretch your skills. There are some points where I just followed along and felt things starting to go a bit over my head, but after stepping away and coming back with fresh eyes later, it made a lot more sense. The behavior trees can be frustrating at times due to Unity glitches, but they do reduce the overall complexity of the course and constitute a relatively small part of it. My favorite part of the course is that every single section has a Challenge. Some are easy; some are quite complex, but they all make you think about how to tackle the problem and really helped the lectures sink in. I wish there would be a part 2 focusing on an AI opponent, but this also presents a great opportunity to expand upon where the course finishes.

Great course! I feel like it should be tagged as an advanced level, considering that some much easier GameDev.TV courses are also tagged as intermediate. There are also some things that need to be fixed, like missing resources in some lectures (those are available on GitLab, so it's not a big problem), and some Unity Behavior features work differently in newer versions, so adding comments to cover those changes would be really useful. Overall, it's a very valuable course and probably my favorite one yet!

The course is rich of information and has solid build systems, but... Before i started the course i understood there is a need for programming knowledge, which i understand. But some subjects which are still new for me and not commonly used are sometimes turn more in a information dump. That is not necessarily bad, but for me personally it can be a bit overwelming at times haha. Next to that the support on questions is quick and informative and the teacher is passionate about programming and the course has rich content and has everything what i expected from it so far!

I usually like GameDev courses, tried to refund this one, but Udemy won't let me. It's not that the course is bad per say, it's just the way he is teaching it is WAY too rapid fire mode vs actually giving us the chance to grasp it. Maybe go in a little more depth, like the other courses do. Again, not saying it's a bad course, but wished it was less rapid fire. If I could get a refund, I would, cause it won't be of any use for me, particularly.

So many versions of Behavior that you would be unable to complete the course. At the end Unity is to blame for bieng so error prone. I am having double thoughts of using Unity al together. Instructor rating 5 stars, Unity rating 1 star. == Previously === This is turning out to be a fantastic course ! I am learning so much from this. Now, crossed half way, hope this speed continues. == Previously == Instructor has put in a lot of effort but this has slowly become enjoyable experience in my 1st attempt to sluggish hog in my 2 attempt. The coding part is easy the unity part is really hard. I hope things change and I am able to finish the course on a positive note.

I'm an experienced developer who recently decided to venture into game development. I'm currently taking a few other courses to strengthen my fundamentals. With Mr. Kurhan course i feel taht i am goin deeper which makes me happy. But because i am new some topics are not so well explained for me. I am using chatgpt for covering up my self. I truly wish he offered more extensive courses.
