Course Description

Welcome to The Ultimate 2D Top Down Unreal Engine Course.

This course will teach you everything you need to know about making 2D Top Down Games in Unreal Engine 5 by creating 3 different games.
The first 2 projects are 2D games only using sprites, while the last projects is a 2D|3D Hybrid mixing 2D Sprites for the characters with a 3D environment making use of Unreal Engine's cutting edge lighting and post processing.

Through teaching Unreal Engine on YouTube and also in person at a Japanese Game Dev school for the past couple of years I've gained an understanding of what students are really looking for and designed this course to teach you the process of making games with Unreal Engine.
All of the knowledge you'll acquire by going through this course of course doesn't only apply to Top Down games, but to creating games in general!

If you're completely new to Unreal Engine you can check out the Unreal Engine 5 Crash Course which is included in one of the early chapters.
After covering the basics we'll jump right into making 3 awesome Top Down Games!

The first game is modeled after retro 'monster catcher' games and you'll learn all about Paper 2D and how we can use sprites and animations in our games.
We also cover how to use Tile Maps to build our stages and place obstacles and decorations in it as well that will use proper layer sorting so the character appears in front or behind;
You'll also learn how to set up Top Down character movement and directional animations from scratch and we'll end things off by creating an interaction system and a Hud Widget that shows dialogue lines and status text.

The second game is a Top Down Adventure game again using Tile maps and Sprites.
We'll expand upon what we learned in the first chapter and also learn about the intricacies of sword and bow based combat by implementing hitboxes, knockback and much more.

The last project is the Hybrid RPG which uses 2D character sprites in a 3D Environment for that unique high definition look that has become popular for JRPGs in recent years.
We'll expand upon the dialogue system by using Data Tables and UI Widgets that change size depending on the length of our text which will build up letter by letter.

Instructor Details

Cobra Code

Greetings, everyone!
I'm a professional Game Developer and Authorized Unreal Engine Instructor.

My passion for games and computers ignited at a young age, but I started to seriously get into Game Development in 2018 and have been using Unreal Engine on a daily basis since then.

Throughout my journey, I've had the privilege of working on various professional projects as a game programmer. Additionally, I took on the role of an Unreal Engine instructor at a Game Dev college in Japan. This invaluable experience has honed my understanding of the challenges learners face and the specific areas they seek guidance in.

In 2021 I started a YouTube Channel called 'Cobra Code' where I also teach about Unreal Engine and my main focus has been making 2D and 2D/3D Hybrid Games.

It brings me immense joy to witness the growth and success of my students as they embark on their own game development journeys.

Engaging with clear explanations (also discussing alternatives and explaining why one solution may be better for certain situations / desired game-mechanics). I also like the pacing of the explanations, it is easy to follow along (also when selecting nodes / events / ... in menus, which is sometimes done too quickly by other instructors). An all around great course, probably THE best course for 2D Unreal games. The instructor's reputation is indeed well deserved!

Very Helpful Course, i was just aiming to learn about 2D but learn few new things about Unreal itself. side note. you gonna need to have intermediate or high understanding of unreal in order to implement what you learn her to other project.

FR : Je suis à la moitié de l'apprentissage. Je suis pleinement satisfait pour le moment. L'évolution est progressive. EN : I'm halfway through the learning process. I'm completely satisfied so far. Progress is gradual.

This course if fantastic! As someone experienced in Unity but fairly new to Unreal, it has been an easy to approach course that also includes solid best practices and fundamentals useful for any level. Including an optional section on Unreal practices was really nice to orient myself in the engine. The game development practices covered in this course are so well done that they'll also transcend the Unreal engine for me, and I'm excited to take some of these learnings to any 2D project I do in the future.

This course was more than worth it! I bought it even though I have a Personal Plan Subscription with top courses included. Steven (Cobra man himself) is a great teacher and his passion, dedication and attention to detail is very clear in the preparation of the course materials, assets, and follow ups. Great course, now on to the next!

Rather than the very specific how-to videos I've seen on YouTube, this course seems to give more broad information to teach important fundamentals to make it easier to figure out how to make My game rather than just a step by step guide to make someone else's.

really enjoying the course, learning a lot, they only thing I would like added is a recap of some of the blueprints at points as we alter and add to blueprints because we develop systems so just going over them and re explaining what's doing what from start to finish would be nice. also comment boxes on the blueprints. but still 10/10 would recommend this course

Excellent course! Learned a lot along the way and this was an excellent continuation from Cobra's previous courses, without negelecting the fundamentals for those who haven't taken any of his other courses or just as a refresher.

Solid course, well explained with good examples. Some of the architecture and design is basic to poor for production, but perfectly sensible for the purpose of learning how to do things in a concise and engaging way.

By Samuel Tingay on 11/18/2025

I have followed plenty of "Just do this" YouTube videos in the past but this combines the solution with a good explanation which for someone with no coding or game dev background was very informative. Very much recommended!
