Welcome To Game Design - Introduction to Game Design Theory (Udemy.com)

Digital, Board Games and Gamification: find your ideal Game Role in the Game Industry while learning about all areas.

Created by: One Day Code - John Haste

Last updated March 2024

Our take

Based on the ratings of 430 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, 90 minute slideshow on what games are and how the games industry works, not a programming course. John Haste of One Day Code walks through goals, rules, loops, game roles, publishers versus indie studios, tutorials, licensing, crowdfunding and where to publish, then hands over a Game Design Document template. With 22 lectures and four quizzes, it is a primer for people who have never studied games and want the vocabulary before picking an engine. Reviewers who had already read a bit about game design say almost everything felt obvious.

Beginners praise it. Several call it a good first step, and one reviewer planned to buy the instructor's bigger board and video game course after finishing this one. The slides are clear, and one reviewer singles out the GDD template as the most useful thing in it. The complaints are consistent, though. Low-star reviews say it barely touches design itself and reads more like an industry overview, with most claims coming from the instructor's opinion rather than sources. Some found he reads his slides aloud and talks slowly. Quiet audio in the early lectures and inaccurate subtitles get mentioned too.

It was last updated in March 2024, and the store and crowdfunding advice will age faster than the theory. Set beside the Unity and Unreal courses in this category, this is a different thing entirely: no code, no engine, one evening. Since it is free, the cost of finding out is low. Take it if the phrase game loop means nothing to you yet. Skip it if you want depth on mechanics or level design.

Best forComplete newcomers who want the vocabulary of game design and the industry before touching an engine.
Skip it ifYou already know what a game loop is or want depth on mechanics, level design or the creative process.

Pros

  • Free and only 90 minutes, so it costs one evening to find out if game design interests you
  • Downloadable slides and a Game Design Document template that one reviewer calls the best part
  • Covers industry structure, publishing stores and licensing alongside the basic theory
  • Beginners say it lays out basic concepts that other courses jump straight past

Cons

  • Low-star reviews say it is an industry overview that never goes deep on actual design
  • Much of the advice is the instructor's opinion with few cited sources; consoles never come up
  • Quiet audio early on, slow delivery, and subtitles reviewers found inaccurate
For my first course on the topic, it was refreshing to get to know about the basic and to-the-ground concepts that most people forget about and straight away jump on intermediate stuff.
Kanush, a student

Truly no prerequisites; it suits total beginners only, and reviewers with any prior exposure to game design found most of it obvious.

I just graduated high school and decided that I will start chasing my dream of becoming a game designer seriously. For my first course on the topic, it was refreshing to get to know about the basic and to-the-ground concepts that most people forget about and straight away jump on intermediate stuff. Great course for scratch beginners like me!!

By Veronika Mikulová on 1/18/2025

It's a pretty good course for a beginner. However, midway through, I found out I am most likely not a beginner because almost everything taught in this course seemed to me like "oh well, duh". However, since the course was straightforward, I ended up finishing it anyway. The presentation was well made and highlighted key points of each lecture. This course can definitely be a solid start for a complete beginner. But I do have to say that a lot of the information in this course was basically "well, in my opinion, it's best to...." which is not exactly great for beginners who need to be introduced to industry standards and factual information.

I love it. I've interested in Game Development and wanna create some indie game but I can't. Because I don't know how games are created. This course really help me a lot. Thanks a lot for this course and I wanna know about Game Design/ Development & Theory more.

I loved every lecture! The teacher is so fun and really good at explaining so much stuff in little, clear words. He also provided cute, well-made slides, which is super great! I hope I can get more courses made by him soon enough cause I love his methods! Best Udemy course I ever took so far, hands down! Thank you so much!

I think that this is a great course for people interested in game design and game design theory and want to get their feet wet. I am in the process of becoming a web and graphic designer, and I have an interest in possibly working as an indie game designer one day, so this course was a good fit for me. The instructor made learning fun and easy, and the length of the videos was just right for an introductory course.

By Rodolfo A. Rivas Matta on 5/4/2021

The overall quality of the course is average. Most of the content is from the instructor's experiences. There are no standards or other sources (probably with the only exception of the sample GDDs). On one occasion, he explained that Android is the most used device for games. That statement pushes people to develop games for Android. However, he never even talked about consoles. A recent global report from Statista (a great source of data if you're about to make a marketing move) explains that game consoles have a much higher market share. The source also gives detailed information about how this differs based on the country. Nevertheless, the course gives useful, but mere basic, information about making games. For example, when the instructor presents the Top 10 Game Designer Mistakes, the first suggestion reads, "Huge project without portfolio." He explains that one should start small and then go for larger projects. Although this may be useful for someone who has completely zero experience, this is not something new or unforeseeable. It is a good course if you want the experience of another developer. A good book about game design could help improve the quality content and structure of the course.

A great course for game development. Very clear explanations. Good for anyone from someone learning to create games all the way up to a veteran at game development course; anyone can learn something from this course. Very thought provoking questions that really involve you. Also, very laidback instructor. (With an A class comedy game ;])

By William Epperson on 4/20/2020

The course contains a solid foundation in basic game design theory. The instructor is engaging and the material is presented in a highly accessible, easily understood manner. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to take their first steps into game design of any type. I do think there could be improvements made in the visual presentation. Primarily, I found the small instructor video in the corner of the screen was ineffective. I think it would be better to present the informational slide either as a background behind the instructor (like on a whiteboard, chalk board or projector screen) or only put it on screen for a moment to let students read and understand, then make the instructor video full screen. Otherwise, five stars for content and format. Does what is advertised, does it well. I even found the quizzes helpful, which is different from many other courses I have taken. Thanks for making this!

By Paul Ramberg Pihl on 1/16/2019

The course as the name describes is an introduction to game design. The lectures are relatively short and hit on basic core elements. At first it seems incredibly underwhelming but those core points truly are the main focuses of basic game design elements. The further into the course I got, the more I felt it was worth what I paid. The main thing I wished to see more of discussed is a little more focus o board game development.

By Enrico Francese on 11/26/2018

The instructor is fun, knowledgeable and good in communicating. The course just touches the surface of few game design principles. Despite the description, it focuses mostly on videogames. There is not a good learning on how to make a game that works, just the concepts to start with. Overall it's short and shallow, it really needs a follow up.
