Wordpress for Web Development (Udemy.com)

Develop Serious Web Sites with Wordpress

Created by: SkillSprints Inc.

Last updated July 2018

Our take

Based on the ratings of 130 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a theme development course, not a tour of the WordPress dashboard. Mark Hannon has students build a custom theme from scratch on a local server, then add menus, a logo, featured images, page templates and child themes, and finally move the site online. It runs about 19 hours across 84 lectures in 10 sections. The requirements say no web experience is needed. It was last updated in July 2018, so expect older tooling like Brackets and MAMP.

Reviews are split. Roughly 95 of 130 ratings are four or five stars, and fans call the instructions easy to follow and well organized, with an instructor who seems to know his stuff. The complaints are consistent, though. Reviewers mention low volume, tiny code on screen, and takes where he rolls back or repeats a step without editing it out. Others say they are told what to type but not why. A few lost hours getting MAMP, PHP or MySQL to behave.

The 3.6 average looks driven by production problems more than by the topics covered. One reviewer who was otherwise frustrated still praised the curriculum. It suits people who learn by typing along and are happy to pause and zoom in. If you are a true beginner, expect to search for help during the local install. Anyone who needs current WordPress practice should check something newer, since this material dates from 2018.

Best forBeginners who want to build a custom WordPress theme by typing along, and can put up with rough editing.
Skip it ifYou want polished video and clear reasons behind each step, or a no-code page builder route.

Pros

  • Builds one custom theme step by step, from menus and logo to page templates
  • Covers child themes across two sections, plus moving a local site to a live server
  • Fans say the instructions are easy to follow and well organized
  • About 95 of 130 ratings are four or five stars

Cons

  • Low volume and small on-screen code, which several reviewers say is hard to read
  • Unedited retakes and rollbacks in the videos leave learners lost mid-lecture
  • Last updated in 2018, and MAMP, PHP or MySQL setup tripped up some students
Very clear explanation and the instructions are really well though out and organized. This makes learning the course fun and doable.

Listed as intermediate, but the requirements ask for no web skills. Beginners can follow, though the local setup trips some.

I installed Brackets as suggested and it gave me a "PHP runtime not found" error. I then installed a version of PHP (not shown in the video). That was probably a mistake because I then could not open PHPMYADMIN. I finally had to uninstall MAMP, Brackets, delete WP files, clear the recycle bin, reboot, and reinstall everything minus a separate version of PHP, and it started to work. I now seem to be working and can follow the course instructions.

By Ryan Ramos on 7/21/2020

Very clear explanation and the instructions are really well though out and organized. This makes learning the course fun and doable. I’m enjoying the course so far.

By Malcolm Rugeley on 5/26/2020

Too slow moving. Also, I tried to use the MAMP program to host the development site but it does not seem to work with mySQL community edition. After spending about a half a day trying to get it to run and having to reinstall mySQL, I have just decided to watch the content only and not try to go along with the coding.

Overall: - Content was good! Definitely was what I was looking for. - The whole course needs to be re-edited. There were quite a few moments in the audio which clearly were meant to be edited out but weren't, e.g. stopping a sentence and saying "pause" before re-starting it. - Hard to see/read the code as it is very small text, so zooming in on the screen while typing out the code would be helpful. - Volume is pretty low in some lectures Some section specific comments: 13. Understanding the Wordpress page templates - A section of the course repeats: creating the functions.php file and creating the custom page template 15. Sidebars and widgets - A section of the course repeats: creating the register_sidebar() function in functions.php

So far the course is interesting and on point, I'm happy, you guys will be the second to know if I become displeased, gotta be fair and let the instructor know first to be certain I'm not misunderstanding the content or misunderestimating (thanks W) his teaching skills

Good match for me. I am a beginner. The instructor was easy to follow even though I have 10 vs his MacBook Pro. I am also using WordPad vs Brackets. Instructor is fantastic.

By Ricky L on 9/12/2018

Very frustrating. You spend 20 - 30 minutes following a video and suddenly things don't make sense. Then you realise the instructor has rolled back to an earlier stage of the video without editing or informing the viewer. This happens again and again in the same video. It's a pity because the curriculum is comprehensive, but the instructor has made a near-zero effort to iron out the errors made during recording.

By Eric Levinson on 5/24/2018

The biggest problem with the course is that the Brackets screen that he is typing on is too small. He is showing the whole page all the time. In the other Udemy courses that I have taken, the instructor will show a portion of the screen and scroll up and down so that the text on the screen is large enough to read. The instructor knows Wordpress. As far as I can tell, he is familiar with the program. He has trouble communicating that knowledge. His explanations are unclear in some cases and mistaken in some others. The small screen adds to this problem. He repeats basic instructions repeatedly to no good effect. He didn't seem to understand what "comment out" means but that is just a personal irritation of mine and didn't contribute or detract from the course. When he made a mistake in his narration, he would go back to the beginning of the paragraph and repeat the entire narration.

By Michael Redig on 5/17/2018

Please understand that the critiques in this are purely objective. I do not mean any offense to Mark's person at all. The main issue is that he doesn't properly edit or organize the videos. I'm still early in the course and have run into several times where a mistake was made, but instead of editing the video to condense where the mistake was made and show what happened, he just starts the same section over again, repeating what you JUST covered, hoping not to make that same mistake again. He doesn't make use of copy/paste that much, which really slows down the pace of the course, and additionally types quite slow. That all being said, I am learning from this course. It's just frustrating being run around in circles and having to wait for his typing to finish.

Like the voice, and the pace, and non-techy verbage. I can always switch to 1.5x speed and be great, others may like as is. No accent, love that. I find myself wondering at the mamp install if it's the same on windows? perhaps a link to a tutorial on mamp / wamp for windows would be fine. Also, the volume was great on the intro videos, but once the install video started I had to go full volume on the player and full on the laptop, and it's still not easy to hear. I would use a program to increase the db.. no problem to turn it down, but I have a not so great max with this laptop, and I'm in a quiet house. I'd silence the cough at 13 min 30 seconds - but not a big deal. so far i can tell the instructor knows the material and is showing patience in presenting it, and that is really nice.
