Affinity Photo 2: Solid Foundations (Udemy.com)

Learn the best way to use Affinity Photo 2 from a 35+ year designer

Created by: Simon Foster

Last updated September 2023

Our take

Based on the ratings of 468 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2023. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a beginner course for Affinity Photo 2 that teaches a workflow rather than a tool list. Simon Foster, a designer with 35 years in the business and a degree in educational design, builds the first big section around a five step method for enhancing any photo, then moves on to selections, RAW editing, and a creative section on shapes, text and brushes. It runs about 15 hours across 78 lectures, with practice images to download and exercise videos at each step. It suits people who feel lost in the program and want someone to tell them what matters and in what order.

Reviewers praise the structure. The five step method, remembered by the acronym SNAPS, is the thing students say they carry away, and one says he now does 95 percent of his editing with just those tools. The wit gets mentioned, and the repetition is described as enough to sink in without being tedious. The complaints are about length and focus. A couple of students say the lectures run long, and one found the talk between the practical bits hard to sit through. Others say the pace is a bit fast, that zooming hides the selected tool, and that a photo editor gets more vector and painting material than they wanted.

The last update was September 2023, so the interface may have drifted a little from the current release, though the workflow lessons age well. Compared with the other beginner courses it sits beside, this is the one to pick for a method you can repeat, and the one to skip if all that is needed is a quick tool tour. Paid, with 468 reviews and a 4.6 rating from about 2,500 students, it is a safe bet for a first Affinity Photo course.

Best forBeginners who want a repeatable editing routine with practice files, not a tour of every tool in the program.
Skip it ifYou only edit photos and have no interest in shapes, text or brushes, or you want short lectures with no chatter between the steps.

Pros

  • A five step editing method (SNAPS) that students say covers most of their day to day photo work
  • Practice images to download and exercise videos for each step, not multiple choice quizzes
  • Simon Foster's teaching gets praised for explaining why, with enough repetition and some wit
  • Covers selections, RAW editing and creative tools after the fundamentals, about 15 hours in all

Cons

  • Lectures run long and one student found the chat between the practical bits boring
  • Last updated September 2023, so the interface may differ from the current version
  • Later sections on shapes, text and brushes are more than a pure photo editor may want
as Simon says, it's the decisions, not the tools. Having a basic 5 point regimen is brilliant, I've found that I can do 95% of my photo editing with just those tools.
Daryl O'Grady, a student

Genuinely beginner friendly with no editing experience required, but the 15 hours and depth also suit existing users filling gaps.

Course Description

'I've done some Affinity Photo tutorials on YouTube, but they just cover one tool or technique. How do I actually enhance a photo, start to finish?'

'There are so many tools in Affinity Photo! So many things to remember! As a beginner what do I need to know and what do I not need to know?'

Enrol on this course and get the answers to these questions from someone with 35+ years in the business.

Affinity Photo is the hottest image editing program for the Mac and Windows, & now it's at version 2. It has many powerful tools for making your photos stand out. But you need to know how to use it, and how to get the best out of it. It's not enough to just learn what a few sliders do. You need to know how a professional sets about developing photos - where they start, what steps they take, which tools they use and most importantly - why.

The course starts with a thorough grounding in the five steps you need to consider taking when you enhance a photo. These steps are so fundamental that I make sure that they are covered properly and in detail. Practically every image you see is available as a download and every step has practice videos. Not a multi choice quiz where you just have to remember the name of a tool. That's not enough - you need practical exercises for a program like Affinity Photo and I give you exactly that in a unique way.

Your practical exercises are consistent. I'll give you a picture and tell you what I want you to do with it. Then you have a choice. You can listen to the advice I give you about how to do the job, or you can skip the advice and try doing the exercise - crop a picture, deal with the color balance, erase some blemishes and so on. Then come back to the video and I'll show you how I did it. I'll also give you some valuable tips about tools, techniques and workflow along the way. Then at the end of the first section you take five photos and do all five steps on them. I don't know of a better way for you to really nail down the fundamental concepts and be ready to move on to more advanced subjects.

Did you notice I said 'fundamental' twice instead of 'basic'? There's a reason for that. This course is aimed at beginners and existing users who want to round out their knowledge but that doesn't mean it's over simplified. Heck, no! You will learn the same tools and techniques that are used in professional studios everywhere. I've been in quite a few and - just between you and me - there's things on this course that I've had to explain to people who use image editors on a daily basis. That's something I can do for you too. As well as being a designer for decades I also spent some time as a teacher and my university degree is all about how people learn. And it is my firm belief that the right way to learn something like Affinity Photo is not to just learn the tools. The right way is to learn the right workflow. You learn the right workflow by using the right tools for the job, and the best way to use them.

Affinity Photo 2: Solid Foundations takes you from complete beginner through to accomplished user. I'll take you through the steps you need to take when developing an image. I use the most important tools for the task in hand and show you the best practices with each. The right way to use a tool, why you are using it, when to use it and cover some mistakes people make with those tools.

I assume no knowledge on your part. All you need is a willingness to learn plus a demo or copy of Affinity Photo 2 for the desktop. I'll take you though all the basics like getting the color and tone sorted. rotating and cropping, sharpening and reducing noise, selections, layer masks etc. Then we'll go on to more advanced topics like layer blend modes, vector art, text and painting. By the end of the course you will know how, when and why to enhance your photos, and really make them shine.

Well, what can I say, I've taken several of his courses and he's been very helpful and useful in all of them so I could get a good grasp of the software. I know he likes to give a bit lengthy teachings on photo editing and functionalities of Affinity Photo though but that's just his way of teaching with decades of experience and he himself mentioned that he couldn't help it :D. Anyway, this has been a really useful revision of Affinity Photo.

I did the earlier version of this course, and it gave me a good grounding in photo editting. I've been using version 2 for a while and I wanted a refresher. Doing the latest version course was a no-brainer. It has simple explanations that even I can follow I recommend this course to anyone who wants to get to grip with photo editting.

The course provides great combination of clear layout and comprehensive presentation of useful tools. Very good for people, who just begin using this software, but are keen to get familiar with its quite advanced features. Thoughtfully matched examples and valuable on-the-spot exercises allow to better understand and quickly memorize vast amount of knowledge.

I found this to be an excellent training course. It provides extensive and detailed explanations of most of the Affinity photo features with lots of useful examples to demonstrate techniques and to practice with. There is an awful lot of information to absorb so will most likely have to revisit the course several times become proficient in all aspects of Affinity Photo. Many thanks

Considering this is a basic learners course, I found that parts of it were too advanced and not likely to be used by the average student. If it were not for my being in the printing trade all my working life, I would have not had a clue what Simon was doing in places; much of it was too subjective and would never be used by Joe Bloggs.

I took your original Affinity for iPad course and gained so much from it. With Affinity 2, I was glad to find this course. This was so much more than I had anticipated. I hoped to develop greater skills for editing photographs, and I was delighted by the thoroughness of this course. The graphic art introduction was a surprising bonus that I greatly appreciated. Looking forward to the next course.

I've done a couple of other courses on Affinity Photo. This course covers much of the same ground, but goes into much more detail. Some of the lessons took a bit too long to set up the main learning point, but overall I felt the course took me from absolute beginner to intermediate level. The final lessons on graphics and the drawing tools went much too fast for me, but that may be because I have absolutely no talent in those areas. The presenter, Simon, came across really well and I hope one day our paths will cross in real life. I would really recommend this course.

Another fantastic course. I have completed many of Simon's courses, mainly dedicated to Affinity programmes on desktop and iPad, and have learnt a lot! His style is very down to earth and he makes no assumptions of the student's prior knowledge, which I like. I would highly recommend this course for anyone wanting to learn how to produce quality edits using Affinity Photo.

As a photo editor I found too much material on the drawing/painting/vector aspects. Despite skipping over a lot of these, I had watched "too much" of the course for a refund. Mind you, there is still a good amount of "awareness" material on photo editing.

By David Bird on 5/3/2023

I had previously worked through the Affinity Photo 1 version of this course and so I had high expectations. I was not disappointed; this may be called "Solid Foundations" but it builds a Solid Structure. Simon is a highly skilled presenter and his enthusiasm shines through. Anyone taking the time to work through the course should achieve a good working knowledge of Affinity Photo.
