Our take
Based on the ratings of 698 students and a sample of their written reviews, the syllabus, the course as of November 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.
Ally Anderson's beginner course from Affinity Revolution runs about 6.8 hours across 94 short lectures. It starts with an overview of the interface and works through adjustments, tools, personas, retouching, selections and masks, and compositing before a set of 16 final project videos. It is built for people who have never edited a photo, with downloadable exercise files so you can follow along on the same images. Every section ends in a small project, which reviewers say is where the abstract bits click into place. Around 2,850 students have enrolled and the rating sits at 4.8 from nearly 700 reviews.
Students praise the teaching first. Reviewers call Ally a clear, organized communicator with a calm voice, one praises the high quality resources, and others say they can now edit their own photos. The rating breakdown backs that up: 483 of 698 reviews are five stars and only six are one or two stars. The complaints are mild but real. The course was last updated in November 2022, and one four-star reviewer says it needs a refresh for the newest version. Another wanted more depth on the tools, and one beginner notes that unzipping the exercise files is assumed knowledge.
On value, this is a focused single-app course, unlike the Entire Affinity Suite course it sits beside, which also covers Designer and Publisher. If Photo is the only app you care about, the tighter scope is a plus. The pace is gentle, and beginners who want the basics explained slowly, with a project to cement each section, will get their money's worth. People who already know layers and masks from Photoshop may find the first half slow. It's a solid first course, not a reference for every tool.
Pros
- Every section ends in a small project, and reviewers say that is where the concepts click
- Downloadable exercise files so students work on the same photos as the lessons
- 483 of 698 reviews are five stars; students single out Ally's clear, calm explanations
- 94 short lectures over 6.8 hours, so it fits in an afternoon or two
Cons
- Last updated November 2022; a reviewer says it needs refreshing for the newest version
- Light on depth: one reviewer wanted more on the tools and had to rewatch with notes
- Assumes basic computer skills, such as unzipping the exercise files
I was completely new to photo editing before, but this guide made it so easy to follow.
Genuinely beginner level: no Affinity or editing experience assumed, only a copy of Affinity Photo installed.

Ally Anderson is an outstanding instructor who is truly passionate about what she teaches. Each lesson is didactically well-structured, and while there are only very rare moments that might initially feel a bit abstract, everything comes together clearly in the projects that conclude each section. This structure gives you a solid understanding of how the Affinity software is systematically built – while always keeping practical use in sight. You learn to recognize the tools and options with a clear sense of how they can actually be applied. I’ve already completed (almost) two of Ally’s courses on Affinity – the introductory course on Affinity Photo and the one on Affinity Publisher – and I absolutely intend to complete all of her courses. I’m working my way into the whole suite and letting her enthusiasm inspire me along the way. Thank you, Ally Anderson!

Wow! This tutorial was incredible. I can't believe I can now edit my photos in Affinity! I was completely new to photo editing before, but this guide made it so easy to follow. The approach was straightforward and clear, which made getting started with Affinity Photo a breeze. If you're new to Affinity Photo, I highly recommend this tutorial as the perfect starting point!

Yes I really enjoyed so much and lernt. Because very easy simple clear explanation, not too many unnesessarry brabrabrabra..... I just wonder you skipped Raw development, I want to know how much you edit a photo at Raw Develop Persona before Photo Persona, and I wanted to know some small detail feature as HSV at HSL, how does it work what is for. ANyway I reaaly appriciate so much from bottom of my herat for your effort.

This is a great course with which to start to learn photo editing. It would have been even greater if some strong emphasis was given on layer behaviors. For some reason my Affinity Photo displays layer differently; not always on top of the chosen layer, even when it is not a child layer, which has caused a lot of confusion. There are some other topics that could have been similarly augmented and improved, topics that many beginner-learners will have some hard time clearly figuring out.

I had been editing photos using the Affinity hard cover book and clicking on random videos from Affinity tutorials or Youtube freebies. I felt my skills and understanding had gaps and inconsistencies. When I follow other photographers they all use the Adobe and I can't translate their work flow to Affinity. Now I feel I have a much better understanding and more techniques to use on my photos. I am very pleased with the time I invested in following these lessons. I have many reference notes as well.

Have previously only used auto adjustments on photo editing software. This course has been good at teaching the basics as well how to use the tools in Affinity Photo. Already putting the learnings into practice and looking forward to expanding knowledge and experience. Will definately be back to progress to more advanced editing. Thanks Ally.

She is a great teacher , She explain in a great way step by step! This course is really make me enjoy and learn a lot of new things , I am totally newbie but I feel like being a little pro after finish this Affinity photo course. This is the first Affinity course I decide to buy. And the first day after I try this one I also buy all of the rest of her Affinity courses with no doubt!

Ally is so amazing. She carefully walks you through every step of the way, which for a beginner like me was exactly what I needed. I am now going to do Ally's Beyond the Basics course as well. I highly recommend her courses over anyone else (and I've tried others). She's the best. Thank you. Note: My only 'complaint' is that the photo's on my screen looked very different to Ally's so some of the steps turned out weird. Also I struggled with all the effects/layers, which didn't turn out like hers. But that wasn't her fault, just saying in case someone else experiences the same problem.

I recently took the Affinity Photo course by Affinity Revolution on Udemy, and I couldn't be more pleased with the experience. The instructor's teaching style was excellent, breaking down complex concepts into easily understandable modules. The course content was comprehensive, covering everything from basics to advanced techniques. The hands-on approach with practical exercises helped me apply what I learned effectively. The production quality of the course was top-notch. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to master Affinity Photo.

I turned to Affinity Photo having given up on trying to use Photoshop and Lightroom (and to save money). This course is a very good introduction to Affinity and much better than the ones on the Serif website. It is long enough to cover topics from image development to compositing but not so long that it is daunting. I completed it in 2 weeks. I was able to watch the videos on my iPad and follow along on the PC. There are plenty of exercises to practise what is being taught and the instructor is clear and easy to follow. Overall, I am glad I purchased and completed this course as it has given me the confidence to use Affinity Photo and develop my images to a higher level.
