An Introduction to the HART Protocol (Udemy.com)

Learn the fundamentals of the HART protocol using both a theoretical and practical approach

Created by: Emile Ackbarali

Last updated May 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 243 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Emile Ackbarali's course is a short, focused introduction to HART, a protocol still heavily used in plant instrumentation alongside 4-20 mA signals. It runs about two hours across 22 lectures. The syllabus moves from where HART is used and how the network works, into a live demo of simultaneous 4-20 mA and HART communication, then command and data frame formats, simulation tools and PACTware. It is aimed at electricians, technicians and automation engineers who already understand analog loops.

Reviewers mostly praise the clarity. They describe the lectures as easy to follow and packed with real-world detail, and one liked the pointers to simulation and testing tools. Of 243 ratings, 140 are five stars and 78 are four. The complaints are small. One student said it does not contain much information, though still good for an introduction, and wanted a real example of reading data from a PLC. Another asked for a PDF. There are no quizzes or exercises, so practice is up to the student.

The material was last updated in May 2026, which is reassuring for a course first published in 2019. With 915 students it is a niche pick, but it does what it says. Anyone who wants a fast, practical start with HART should be happy. If the goal is deep device configuration or PLC integration, plan on more learning afterward. The final bonus section is about getting the instructor's courses at lower prices, and it is easy to skip.

Best forTechnicians and engineers who know 4-20 mA loops and want a quick, practical start with HART and PACTware.
Skip it ifYou want to read HART data from a PLC, or need deep device configuration beyond the basics.

Pros

  • Clear, easy-to-follow explanations that reviewers call useful for real-world work
  • Live demo of 4-20 mA and HART running together on one loop
  • Covers command and data frame formats plus PACTware and simulation tools
  • Short enough to finish in an evening, and updated in 2026

Cons

  • No quizzes or exercises, so practice is left to the student
  • One reviewer wanted a real example of reading HART data from a PLC
  • Assumes working knowledge of 4-20 mA loops and analog inputs
I am a factory electrician. This is the perfect course for me to learn networking and fieldbus protocols.
Alan Li, a student

Intermediate fits: it needs 4-20 mA loop and analog input basics, but no earlier HART experience is listed as a requirement.

Course Description

HART stands for "highway addressable remote transducer", and is a protocol that is still heavily used in the process automation industry. HART is essential for the remote configuration, troubleshooting and maintenance of plant instrumentation and it's use yields many cost saving benefits.

This course has been designed with practicality in mind. At the end of this course, you will be able to use the HART protocol in a very hands-on way to configure, maintain and troubleshoot plant instrumentation. Essentially, you will have a new practical skill in the field of process automation and plant maintenance.

Specifically, in this course, you will learn:

- Where HART is used in the process automation industry.

- Basic technical overview.

- How to create a physical point-to-point HART network.

- HART commands and data frames.

- Software simulation of master/slave communication.

- Use of the popular PACTware software for HART communication.

- Advanced technical details / real world application examples.

and much more ...

Instructor Details

Emile Ackbarali

I have been working in the fields of Software Development, Software Systems Integration and Process Automation since 1996. In 2003, I stepped out on my own and started working for myself providing software development and systems integration services to small and medium businesses.

Teaching has always been a passion for me. I have taught at the tertiary level for many years on the subjects of programming, control systems as well as systems integration. In the last few years I found myself incorporating more and more videos into the curriculum with amazing results.

When I heard of uDemy I just could not help but sign up. With teaching in a classroom, you can reach only so many students, but with uDemy you can reach the world! I plan to publish and promote as many courses as I possibly can on the uDemy platform.

It is exceptionally well-structured, and the concepts are clearly explained with real-world examples. The Instructors also provided an introduction to a lot of tools for Simulation, Configuring and testing of HART protocols/HART compliant devices, which is useful if one wants to explore more about the protocol.

The course doesn't contain many information but as an introductory course i think it is very good. i think you should add some real examples that you show us how to read data from PLC not just show the results i think it would be much better.

By Giovanni Domingo Lara on 8/21/2023

This course was great! It really opened my eyes to the HART protocol. I deal with instrumentation at work & wanted to learn more towards what HART was. I want to thank you Emile for your wonderful explanations & resources. Do you plan on also making a more in-depth HART course?

By Adithya Tirumanisetti on 12/5/2020

It was a good overview of the HART protocol with a practical demo.

By Samuel Ohwesi on 4/9/2020

The course is brilliant. I expected it to tell me where the Data are stored and how do I output to DB or file? Also, how do I connect a wireless router to the sensor? Please send me info to samuelo@uservewireless.net kind regards Samuel Ohwesi

Having just completed the course, I learnt so much more than I originally knew. This course was perfect for me and gave me an excellent overview on the HART protocol system. I would highly recommend this particular course for anybody looking to gain an insight into HART!!!!!!

By Lucas Soares on 1/9/2020

The course exceeded my expectations, I certainly recommend! I'm not fluent in english, but it was easy to understand. The content is very well structured. My only suggestion is to review the label, there're feel mistakes and it can embarrass who don't know english very well.

By Anirban Banerjee on 10/13/2019

The course was really helpful. Gain a complete understanding from basic to intermediate concepts of HART protocol. Ackbarali, thanks again for sharing and explaining all the basic concepts in such a lucid manner.

By Kevin Saddington on 9/27/2019

I had a working knowledge of HART using a hand held communicator. This course opened my mind to other posibilities. I had looked at Pactware but was put off by its complexity, not any more. This course makes it look so easy. With that i bought a HART modem on ebay. Thanks so much for this course

By Raul Boticario on 7/16/2019

I learn a lot from the instructor his very knowledge he knows what his talking about, I will recommendation to others. Thank you Sir. These course help me a lot reviewing what i learn on Instrumentation I can watch over and over and become master to it and applied it to safety standard Kind regards Raul Boticario
