Course Description

The TDD Masterclass by Petros Efthymiou.

Learn State-of-the-art Android development by building a real production app.

Are you following dozens of forums and articles and buying courses in order to move your development skills and career to the next level?

I am, too, but more often than not, after completing them, I realize that there is still a HUGE amount of work left to be done to connect all the pieces together and make them work on a real application. I found that even though a course was providing comprehensive knowledge on coroutines, it didn't mean that I knew how to integrate them with Retrofit, Live data, or Hilt. And because another course was extensive on Test Driven Development after completing it, I didn't know how to write an application with TDD using the latest Android tech stack.

After buying courses, reading articles & forums, and a couple of months of hands-on practice, I have finally learned how to combine Android 11 best development practices in an Android application.

I created this course to make the process easier for you! You are going to learn how to combine

  • Kotlin

  • Coroutines

  • Live Data

  • Kotlin Flow

  • Retrofit

  • Hilt

  • Jetpack Navigation

  • MVVM

And complete a real Android application purely on Outside-In Test Driven Development

You are going to learn how to write not flaky espresso tests in a real scenario with delays and HTTP calls, without using Thread.sleep(). After all we wouldn't be doing TDD without efficient & effective Espresso UI tests!

Why Me?

Even though I am new to Udemy, I am not new to the industry. I have been working as an Android engineer from junior to lead positions in ambitious startups & large multinational companies for about 8 years. Being a good engineer, though, doesn't automatically mean that you are a good Instructor as well.

In the past 5 years I have also discovered my passion for education and worked as a Software Instructor in several colleges and companies, including New York College, Hellenic American Union my current position is a Mobile Trainer in a Multinational company called Backbase, where I am training

  • The internal RnD engineers

  • The internal professional services engineers

  • External third-party integrators

In my lifetime, I have trained thousands of developers in classrooms, web conferences, and video courses.

Why is it important?

As we advance to more senior engineering levels, we realize that how we do things is equally important to get them done. The industry has started to realize that a serious software engineering company can no longer base its products on purely architectural and engineering practices.

I often say that there are 3 stages in the advancement of an engineer

  • In the first stage, he/she is a programmer. He is learning how to make things work, e.g., how to add buttons in an Android application and handle its click. But is not aware of the importance of doing things well. He or she cannot realize that a purely structured system is certain to backfire in the long run, and while everything initially seemed to be going well, "suddenly," it is impossible to work with this system anymore. New features are hard to add, and bugs very often slip to production code

  • In the second stage, having realized the past mistakes, the professional starts practicing and learning good engineering patterns. He or she starts exploring things like :

    • SOLID Principles

    • Design patterns

    • Clean architecture

    • Separation of concerns

    • Low coupling, High cohesion

    • Unit Testing

and if is passionate and dedicated enough, manages to reach a more senior level, and is able to develop systems that can be successful not only in the short but also in the long run

  • The final stage is the Mastery. This stage is an ongoing process and doesn't ever end. After the engineer has a good understanding of the above practices, he realizes there is a huge room for improvement. He learns how to apply them and, most importantly, when they are not required, and simpler-junior level approaches are more beneficial for the specific project/situation. In other words, it is a constant effort to learn how to never

    • Under-Engineer

    • Or Over-Engineer.

He or she also comes in touch with more advanced practises like Test Driven Development which takes quite a lot of effort to get a grasp and master it.

In this course, I will do my best to advance you on this path. I will offer you what I have learned on my journey, and I am also very open to learning from you. I am always available on the forums to support and discuss topics that you might have a different point of view, and this way, we can help each other on our endless road to Software Mastery.

Instructor Details

Petros Efthymiou

Hi, I am Petros, and I am a passionate Software Engineer and instructor with over 10 years in the industry.

I struggled a lot in my early stages when I realized that in order to take my career to the next level, I needed to learn how to do things properly instead of just "making it work."  In my journey to become a better engineer, I followed hundreds of courses, articles, books, and conferences. What I have always been missing is a single source where I could find the best practices integrated and working together. I often studied TDD, for example, but was unable to apply it to a production Coroutines-based system. This is the problem I am tackling in my courses.

I am teaching best practices using real-life examples. I make sure to explain all the reasoning behind every decision but also provide a state-of-the-art skeleton that you can re-use on your own product instead of having to combine the pieces by yourself.

I have worked on multiple Companies ranging from ambitious startups to large multinational companies as a Senior Engineer and Software Instructor. Currently, I am employed in Backbase as a software instructor team lead, making sure that our superstar developers revolutionize the old, rotten banking industry.

It's a nice training in the end; I learned some new concepts and really grasped the idea of TDD and why it is actually useful. I will integrate this mindset to my personal & work projects for sure. The instructor kept the training simple and to the point, which I like. My only feedback is it could be more recent technologies, e.g. could be fully compose without xml at all, the sample project architecture could be cleaner, etc. If you don't get lost in these technical details, it's a good learning.

It's a short course, but enough and clearly, concise explanation for me to understand. I don't like the course that too long, hard to complete. I don't like the course that the teacher talk a lot. I like something like this course: short and concise and enough and easily for me to complete. This is the first time I can complete with the highest percentage of a course in Udemy. I will find more the course of this author to learn if necessary for my career.

This is a class about TDD and it's a good and easy to follow one. However there should be an update with today's code as some things are deprecated (ex: runBlockingTest) and soon to be removed (kotlin synthetic with kotlin 1.8 in november 22). At least a slide or 2 to list the changes as a start should be enough to follow this smoothly. As this class is mainly about the TDD method, another focusing on the tests is required for more complex cases

Kudos to Petros on making such an easy to learn course on android development using TDD I started this course hating android and ended up loving to code in Kotlin. Petros is a true teacher and will guide you the whole way to a mininum viable product of an app. He will also teach you about how a demo sprint is planned in a company and will take you a virtual one. Would definitely recommend buying this course as it gives you the right discipline to work on your app. However complex it might be!!

There are several problems with this masterclass: It doesn't explain how to use Espresso in detail. The tests are very basic. There is no end-to-end tests to learn how to do it. The course doesn't explain how to use FragmentContainer to test an specific fragment and instead it uses a low performance method to do it. Some libraries that should be tested (Hilt, retrofit calls and so on) but i can not see those specific tests on this course. In general, it's fine if you only want to have a very basic introduction to the subject, but it's not enough to learn it in depth.

A little bit out of date Groovy project, there is required to solve some Gradle issues and update the libraries when trying to update the project. But besides this the course is really good. It would really help me though, if there would be some course on TDD for Kotlin multiplatform development - if there is any test tool for both android and ios - because that is what I am bit concerned about, I would like to avoid working with different test tools on different platforms (e.g. UI tests). Also I have to say there is 1 missing TODO in the project - for ProjectFragment there are no acceptance and Unit tests for the "displaysErrorMessageWhenNetworkFails" use-case as it is done for ProjectDetailsFragment

This was honestly one of the best courses I've ever taken. Very granular approach to how to implement the TDD, using all newest tools and technologies. Everything was very well explained from scratch, giving a chance at the end to implement a feature on our own using analogical example. The only possible improvement I could suggest is to include the library imports in snippets attached to the lesson, but I'm not sure if Udemy is providing a place for that. I would be really interested if there was a second part of this course, presenting for example the database integration, dynamic responses from the backend or more complicated features.

I cannot say that his course was complete waste of time or money, but I didn't like TDD approach applied in the course. Most of the time we were testing if functions were called but not the real low-level functionality. Rule of TDD that I'm following is to write failing test first and then to write functionality to make it pass. In this course there is often one high level acceptance test written and afterwards comes lots of code that doesn't have appropriate failing low low level acceptance tests written in advance(or doesn't have them at all). According to author his TDD approach should make debugging easier then for example TDD method proposed by Unlce Bob but I still don't see why this would be the case after watching most of the course. Especially as we are doing lots of mocking and not testing real functionality(I see writing tests that make sure that function gets called usually as waste of time, that can be checked by getting low level functionality tested). I also didn't really liked the depth in which Android concepts like Android live data, coroutines and Kotlin Flow have been explained. It is assumed that those are basics and we should already know or that we can Google it anyway. As this should be Masterclass, I think that those concepts should be explained in more details to achieve real understanding/mastery.

By Kurt Rex on 12/25/2020

I have completed this course and found it to be excellent. Some concepts were entirely new to me, and were explained and illustrated clearly and engagingly. The course description is accurate, and the content is focussed and concise. I have been developing and maintaining an app on Google Play Store since 2015; however, being entirely self-taught, I have large gaps in my knowledge that made some of this course especially challenging, but also more valuable. I was occasionally frustrated by not being able to catch a key word - when scripted subtitles would help - and showing the import statements more frequently would have avoided some divergent results. Overall, I am very glad to have taken the course and would not hesitate to recommend it.

By Anil S on 11/25/2020

I would rate this course 10 stars if I could. This course has helped me fill in so many gaps that I had regarding android development. Even with 7 years of experience in android development, I always wondered how Android Jetpack, UI/Unit tests, TDD, MVVM and DI all worked together. And I always felt TDD is an overkill and not a good paradigm for developing android applications. However, Petros proved me wrong. Thanks for such this amazing course Petros. Please help us with more courses through which we can improve our coding skills and grow together as community. 2 small improvements I would suggest is adding subtitles (though I had no issues personally) if possible and adding the complete GitHub project link at the end of the course for complete reference.
