Course Description
*** Course has now been updated for .Net 8, NextJS 14 and Next-Auth v8***
Microservices is the latest 'buzzword' and hot topic in the web development industry at the moment and nowadays having microservices as part of your skillset is becoming more and more essential. This course aims to teach you how to build a microservices based app using .Net for the backend services and Next.js for the client app. We start from nothing and build up the app until we have a completed app that we can publish to a Kubernetes cluster on the internet.
Here are some of the things that are covered in this course:
Creating several backend services using .Net that provide functionality for the app
Service to service communication using RabbitMQ and gRPC
Using IdentityServer as the identity provider.
Creating a gateway using Microsoft YARP
Building a client side app with Next.js using the new App Router functionality (since Next.js 13.4)
Using SignalR for push notifications to the client app
Dockerizing our different services
CI/CD workflows using GitHub actions
Adding ingress controllers
Publishing the app locally using docker compose
The goals of the main part of this course is to build this app and be able to run and publish everything locally without having to sign up or pay for any cloud services. Once you have completed the main part of the course there are 3 optional Appendixes that cover:
Unit and integration testing
Publishing locally to Kubernetes
Publishing the app to a Kubernetes cluster on the internet
Tools you need for this course
In this course all the lessons are demonstrated using Visual Studio Code, a free (and fantastic) cross platform code editor. You can of course use any code editor you like and any Operating system you like... as long as it's Windows, Linux or Mac. Please ensure that your computer can run Docker as this is a requirement for this course (please see the pre-requisite lesson available as a preview to confirm this).
Is this course for you?
This course is very practical, about 90%+ of the lessons will involve you coding along with me on this project. If you are the type of person who gets the most out of learning by doing, then this course is definitely for you.
On this course we will build an example Auction Application with several services that we will use to provide its functionality. For the client side of things we are using Next.js to take advantage of its client side and server side capabilities which is an excellent fit for what we are building. All you will need to get started is a computer with your favourite operating system that is capable of running Docker, and a passion for learning how to build a microservies based application using .Net and Next.js.

I really enjoyed the course and the instructor's teaching style, i learned a lot from each lesson and will definitely apply the concepts in future projects. This isn’t a criticism, but I did face some challenges with the frontend project due to updates in Next.js since the course was recorded. That was the most difficult part for me, as I encountered many errors and bugs. I believe the frontend portion could benefit from an update, and if that's possible, it would definitely improve the overall learning experience. That said, I still recognize the value of the course, Professor Nill did his best to help me when I faced issues, and I truly appreciate everything he taught throughout the lessons. I recommend this course!

The course is exceptionally well-structured and highly informative. What really sets it apart is the way it combines in-depth knowledge with practical, hands-on experience—making sure that if you follow along properly, you genuinely build real skills instead of just theoretical understanding. The delivery is clear, engaging, and very well-paced, and the attention to detail is remarkable. Every concept is explained thoroughly, leaving no gaps, which makes the learning process smooth and effective. Overall, it’s a top-quality course that reflects both expertise and a genuine effort to help learners succeed.

Having purchased other Neil's lessons, I can easily say that this one was a masterpiece. You will learn how to create a fully functional application end to end from scratch. From back end services and front end client to deploying the application using Docker and Kubernetes, something which I am personally struggling with. Had it enforced at least partially SOLID principles on coding (even though I totally understand it is not the point of this lesson) as well as including totally free of charge options for deployment (Section 16) this would be 5/5 rating easily. Yet I am more than satisfied with this course and for sure I would recommend it to everyone who wants to strengthen their knowledge on microservices using .NET without any hesitation.

This course is everything you need to know about full development workflow. The author guides you through every aspect of application development. I personally liked: Visual Studio Code development with many valuable extensions described, microservice communication resilience, MassTransit, testing with Postman self checking scripts, integration tests with Test Containers, deployment with Kubernetes. Starting with empty IDE at the end of the course you will have a microservice app deployed in the cloud and ready to work on you. My only concern: sometimes the author spends too much time on repetitive tasks like creating another API endpoint.

If you have experience in .net microservices, If you have made small applications with react.js, If you have some entry-level knowledge of Docker, And if you want to advance these and make a full stack project where you will develop microservices with Docker & Kubernetes and develop the front end with Next.js, it is suitable for you. I was looking for a course that fit exactly this need. It was sufficent to improve my knowledge about microservices and teach me about docker&kubernetes. I'm glad i purchased it and completed it. His experience and explanation are excellent. I followed and completed it in the first quarter of 2024, the versions were up-to-date enough. Course has both 2 option for kubernetes publish; local & online (free/paid). I did both and got a successfull result.

Normally when it comes to microservices, everyone choose ecommerce store as an example application but here it is totally a different car bidding microservices application which I never come across such example anywhere. It is a full stack development, every piece of it covered along with code. I request Neil to add uploading images functionality as an appendix in this course, as that part alone missing in NextJS. In total this is wonderful course. Neil you nailed it.

This course is a perfect match for full stack devs! Why?: - It covers Microservices with CQRS (almost) pattern. - It covers Duende Identity Server. - It covers Next JS with App Router and Next Auth. - Integration of Next Auth with Duende Identity Server. - Integration of all these combinations with docker and Kubernetes. - I hate reading documentations. - Neil is a first class trainer with clear articulation and pleasant accent! There are no shortages of courses on .Net Microservices but none of them till date, brings all the puzzle pieces together to create an end to end solution! This course does exactly that! Neil should stop accusing himself of laziness, until he realizes there are people like me out there! What could have been better --> - Could have been made shorter of course! Completing a course of this size requires a lot of dedicated time for doing trivial things. The time can be used for learning the key knowledge and then practice to apply them. - Even though the course is apparently new, a lot of libraries and code has already changed and that requires separate effort for new students to make the course project work. My request to Neil will be to make another Docker and K8 based course with Identity server and next js. This time make the project shorter (all reads, admin writes, less styling) but cover Identity Server and Next Auth in greater details! Also include CI/CD with AKS/EKS integration.

I absolutely loved this course on .NET Microservices, Next.js, IdentityServer, RabbitMQ, Docker, and Kubernetes! The content was not only well-structured but also provided a deep dive into each technology. The instructor's clear explanations made complex concepts easy to grasp. The hands-on examples and real-world applications were invaluable for gaining practical experience. What sets this course apart is its comprehensive coverage of the topics for making it an essential guide for mastering these technologies. Highly recommended for both beginners and those looking to deepen their knowledge.

I really happy that Neil released this course. I am a senior software engineer and learned a lot from Neil in the past. Nowadays microservices are in focus and interesting architecture. I already taken some that made for node.js and I reimplement the architecture in .net, but when seen Neil has released this course I instantly started it and looking forward to assimilate it in my toolset. I know this instructor, always deliver excelent training material, no anti-pattern solutions. Next.js is a top on the cherry! UPDATE: Currently a passed the middle of the course and its above expectations.

I have purchased 4 of 6 Neils courses. All of them are very well structured, and well thought out. He also re-record all of his courses every now and then from scratch, mainly when there are breaking changes. To be honest I don't really get the feeling that he is teaching for making money, but pure from passion and contributing to the community. Without a doubt and sincerely my most respected teacher. Thank you for everything I learned from you, it means a lot to me. Kenneth
