Our take
Based on the ratings of 66,903 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a character drawing course built on fundamentals rather than step-by-step copying. Scott Harris walks through art fundamentals, forms and proportions, gesture, workflows, composition, expression, hair and cloth, then finishes with about 13 hours of full drawing demos. It runs about 28 hours over 118 lectures and has pulled in around 318,000 students with a 4.6 rating from nearly 67,000 reviews. It suits beginners and returning hobbyists who want to draw from imagination in any style, and who are happy to do the practice on their own time.
Reviewers praise how clear the teaching is. Even a three-star review says the explanations are concise and never confusing, and two students describe breaking through a plateau or drawing from imagination for the first time. The complaint that comes up again and again is balance: the first two modules are mostly talking, and the course is theory first, with practice left to assignments students complete alone. One beginner says she got lost once the 3D forms started, another says it lacks structure for beginners, and one reviewer is irritated by repeated prompts to book a one-to-one session.
It was refreshed in August 2026, so the material is current, and the included brushes and workflow files add value for digital artists. Its focus is characters specifically rather than drawing in general. It's a good pick for students who will actually do the assignments. Those who need an instructor drawing alongside them for every concept should expect some frustration.
Pros
- Explanations are clear and concise; even a three-star reviewer says he was never confused.
- Module 10 alone is nearly 13 hours of full character drawing demos, start to finish.
- Refreshed in August 2026 and comes with 7GB of extra videos, brushes and workflow files.
- Students can send their work to the instructor for feedback, according to reviews.
Cons
- The first two modules are mostly talking, with little drawing on screen.
- Theory first: practice happens in assignments done alone, which one reviewer says can take months.
- One beginner says she got lost once 3D forms started, with no gentle ramp up; another calls it unstructured for beginners.
I've overcome a difficult plateau in my art skills through these lectures, I feel my goals as an artist are once again achievable. Everything is clear, concise and practical.
Labeled beginner and it starts from scratch, but beginners who need hand-holding may struggle; intermediates get the most from it.

What Students Are Saying About Character Art School: Complete Character Drawing
"Probably the best art course I've ever taken -- online or in college. Wonderfully presented, it helped me correct mistakes I'd been making that were really holding my artwork back. I've seen phenomenal progress after 30 days practice of the course material. Highly recommended."
Dan Rahmel ★★★★★
"Just a perfect 5 stars rating. It's really complete and filled with advice, theories and concrete examples. As he said, it's probably the last character drawing course you'll take. It's all I wanted. Thank you so much Scott Harris!"
Mario ★★★★★
"Amazing course. I haven't even started drawing yet because I'm in awe of how simple the instructor makes even the most complicated techniques look. At last, drawing like a pro is within my grasp! I also like the fact that the instructor allows me to just watch the first time through without worrying about drawing until I'm familiar with the concepts. My next time through the course, I'll be prepared and more confident than ever to begin drawing. Even so, I've already used some of the concepts in this course for a sketch here and there when I feel inspired to draw, and I can tell worlds of difference between my former drawings and newer ones. Laid back instructor, but very knowledgeable. I highly recommend this course."

i've been drawing my whole life, so i know most of this stuff, but i really appreciate what he said about how he didn't use perfect examples in this course. i also like how you can send your art to him

I thought this course was great! It had lots of information packed into it, and I really like the fact that he also targets it to beginner artists and not just artists with past experience. This was extremely helpful and I recommend this for others!

I was already drawing at an early age using just observation and adapting my own style in the mix. I got to a point where I got good to draw my own comic book as a hobby but I know I'm still lacking with the fundamentals because I hated how I drew hands and the dynamics of my characters are limited to the figures I copied... That was more than 2 decades ago then life began and I put down the pen. This course revived that passion and while I'm just in section 3, I'm already drawing better than I ever was, and from imagination! Assignment on exercise 2 really helped a lot to this progress and from the pace I'm going, I know that I'm going to finally live the life I always wanted and hopefully make a living out of it as well. Love this course and I'm literally blazing through it unlike the other certs I took here in Udemy where I have to somewhat force myself to complete, this however, draws me in organically.

very well taught and easy to follow the lessons have already boosted my confidence and made me understand how to make character drawings more interesting. Looking forward to seeing how these tools develop as we continue.

I bought an online course multiple times as expensive in the past, and I think I am getting more value out of this one! Fantastic explanations, on the point, no fluff. It complements my intermediate level knowledge very well and I kinda understand what I need to work on. The emotion vs technical skill section hit me hard. If I had to pick one single most important takeaway, it would be this one!
By Serge Nshuti on 2/5/2026
am learning a lot for sure I didn't know drawing was not supposed to be viewed as a talent but you explained it really well its a skill one learns like writing or reading
By Benjamin Davis on 1/12/2026
The structure of the course could be more balanced. the entire first 2 modules are mostly talking. the skills he's trying to teach in module 2 are explained in a "I'm telling you" way. Rather, it would have been nice to structure the lessons when once explained if there was a implementation course. For example, when he was talking about straight lines, it would have been nice if a follow up course was "draw boxes using trying to use this skill" either then that, the information is very well said. I was never confused about what was being explained. Very clear, complete, and concise teaching.

This class has done wonders for my ability to draw anatomy and understand difficult subjects like ears, hands, feet and angles. Learning about important studies such as gestures, expressions, and perspectives. He is a very thorough explanation of both the basic and advanced techniques in character, design, and excellent guides for you to learn them with. It has been an incredibly useful class that has greatly improved my drawing abilities. I would highly recommend it.
