Learn how to draw anime and how to draw manga, easily and professionally

Our take
Based on the ratings of 5,595 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Scott Harris, a working character artist and author of a published manga drawing book, teaches this as a beginner course in six modules. The syllabus shows proportions, facial expressions, hair, line art, and then long full drawing demos. It runs about 11 hours across 54 lectures, and it was updated in August 2026. The pitch is the theory behind the manga look, not just 'do this to look more manga' tips. It suits people who already love anime and want to know why it looks the way it does.
Reviewers like how clearly the proportion rules are explained, and one says other manga resources skip the theory. Another says Harris's commentary during the demos is instructive. The complaints are consistent, too. Several 3 and 4 star reviews say the course lacks full-body lessons and poses, and nothing on clothes or backgrounds. Some find the long demos filler, and one reviewer noticed the same demo in a long and a short version. Two mention quiet audio, and one got almost no feedback on assignments.
Of 5,595 ratings, 3,159 are five stars and 1,717 are four, so most people leave happy. Still, one reviewer found it too basic and preferred the general character drawing course, which Harris's own requirements list recommends alongside this one. Treat this as a solid head, face and proportion course, not a full art education. It is a good pick if you want the manga style specifically. Otherwise, pair it with a body and pose course.
Pros
- Proportion rules for heads and bodies are explained clearly, and reviewers say they hold up in practice
- Teaches the theory behind the manga look instead of just 'do this to look more manga'
- Harris talks through his choices during the full demos, which one reviewer calls instructive
- Updated in August 2026, with about 11 hours spread over 54 lectures
Cons
- Little on full bodies in varied poses, clothing or scenery, a gap several reviewers name
- Some find the long demos filler, and one demo appears in both long and short versions
- Audio is quiet for some, and one reviewer got almost no feedback on assignments
I learned things I never even thought about. I've been wanting to draw in Manga style for a long time, but a lot of resources doesn't explain theory.
Beginners are fine here, but it is mostly a head and face course. Harris also recommends his Character Art School course.

Course Description
What is Manga Art School?
Manga Art School is a 2-6 week learn-anywhere video course where you learn to become adept at drawing professional and authentic Japanese Manga and Anime character stylization. I’ve hand-crafted the Manga Art School: The Complete Anime & Manga Drawing Course to be the only course you need, to learn all the core fundamentals and advanced stylization and proportional knowledge needed to draw and sketch Manga and Anime style characters well. If you’re an absolute beginner or you’re already at an intermediate level, the course will advance your current ability to not only a professional level, but help you achieve an authentic and appealing manga or anime style in your character work. You won't end up with Anime or Manga characters that don't look "quite" like true manga style - no, this course will show you how to achieve a real Japanese Anime and Manga stylization of your work.. The course is a comprehensive 6 module guided video course, where the only limit to your progression is your determination and engagement in learning the concepts and engaging in the rewarding assignments.
Whether you want to draw stylized characters for Manga, Anime, or Manga genres such as Shoujo, Shounin, Bishoujo, your own Doujinshi, or Kodomo manga style characters, this is the course you need to get you there.
I’ll teach you to draw in a true manga style without fear. I’ll teach you to draw an authentic manga style well.
Finally, Learn Manga and Anime Style Drawing Well
Whether you’re a complete beginner, or intermediate at drawing Manga styles, you’ll learn things you never knew you never knew. Immense time and research, as well as years of drawing experience have gone into creating a course that distills the core information you need to know, in order to draw convincing and authentic manga or anime style characters. I’m so convinced of this, I’ll give you a no-questions asked refund if you’re not satisfied.
Clear, Easy to Understand Lessons
Crystal clear in fact. Learning Manga and Anime stylization effectively means having information presented in a logical and coherent way. The Manga Art School Course is modular by design, easy to grasp, and allows you to learn in a well paced, structured way. Engage in the course chronologically, then revise each module at your leisure. Grasp concepts faster than you ever have before – there’s no fluff here. (and really, this no fluff promise is in all of my courses!)
Assignments that are Rewarding
Bridging the gap between theory and practice, each module’s assignments have been designed to both reinforce theory, and feel rewarding. I’ve taken the core of the theory, and purpose built each assignment to help you rapidly progress, and you’ll see the difference in your own work almost immediately. Art is about doing, so let’s get started.
What's Your Style?
Anime and Manga is not simply one single style, but has many, many variants. This course teaches you the foundational stylistic rules that are common among all styles, allowing you not only to draw authentic manga and anime characters, but create your own style that is still true to the original Japanese principles. I'm not teaching you a 'method' or a 'way' to draw the styles, I'm teaching you to be a fundamentally good Manga and Anime style character artist.

Fundamentals are laid in a way that anyone could follow it and it actually makes sense when you practically use it. Especially how to quickly grasp the anatomy is skillful. And the additional character design course that was recommedis a complete package for what learners like me look for.

Great! Exactly what I needed and perfect for beginners. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because there were two of the exact same demo, one super long and the other short. Maybe instead of the long demos, do more short ones of people in more poses, e.g.: sitting, jumping, lying down, etc. I very much appreciated his thorough description of proportions. Thank you!

I learned things I never even thought about. I've been wanting to draw in Manga style for a long time, but a lot of resources doesn't explain theory. It's usually just "Do this to make it look more manga like." But without the theory you can't start creating your own works in that style and learning theory fundamentals from this course helped me so much.

I enjoyed the content and the instructor gave great instruction. Feels like the course is incomplete though as there was no guidance on drawing bodies in any position besides front view standing or how to draw clothes. I received almost no feedback on the assignments. I submitted them in the Q&A as course content but there must be an external place to submit to receive feedback.

I learned quite a lot about the proper, traditional and latest ways on how to draw manga animation or characters. I have yet to completely master the proportions and ways to draw manga characters but this course opened my mind about a lot of ideas and techniques on how to draw (generally) as well as encouraging us to really be creative and not limit us to certain rules and by the book. It has been a great experience and class. Will be coming back to these lessons to further practice and enhance my drawing skills generally not just in manga style. I am grateful for our professor for making this class an enjoyable and very informative one.

I learned a lot from this class, and I'm still not done with it yet! I love how precise he is with his lessons. Completing the assignments helps you reflect on how you've improved while taking his course. After I finish this course, I will buy his other courses. I highly recommend this course if you want a strong understanding of the manga/anime style.

English: this is a great course, he explains very well and goes straight to the point of how to make a trait of manga, only need to have subtitles in Portuguese to be excellent. I recommend Português: Esse é um otimo curso, ele explica muito bem e vai direto ao ponto de como fazer um traço de mangá, só falta ter legendas em portugues para ser excelente. Recomendo

the instruction is clear and concise which makes it engaging to me. The realtime demos are great as they really show how the drawings are done so that the student's perception of time is adjusted to a more realistic one rather than the distortion that happens with nothing but time-lapse. This course is the glue that connects a lot of info that I've gotten from many books.
