Complete Guide to Maya (Udemy.com)

Learn to create complete animation shots for your short films.

Created by: Nexttut Education Pvt.Ltd.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 236 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2023. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a project course for Maya. Abraham Leal, who teaches under Nexttut Education, walks through the interface and basic tools, then spends most of the 18 hours building a single 15 second robot short. Modeling, Substance Painter texturing, rigging, animation principles, rendering and a short After Effects finish all get a turn across 82 lectures. It is pitched at beginners, and a reviewer who had never touched Maya says it was easy to follow. A 3ds Max user said the videos are helping them understand how to work in Maya a lot better.

Students rate it 4.6 from 236 reviews, and 161 of those are five stars. They like the clear explanations and the instructor's energy, and one reviewer liked that he explains 3D concepts before touching the interface. The complaints repeat, though. Audio cuts out or gets distorted whenever he renders while talking, and a few reviewers say it was never fixed. Some find the pace and shortcut use too fast, and menus are sometimes named once in passing. Two low reviews say questions went unanswered.

The course was last updated in June 2023. The syllabus shows breadth across stages rather than depth in any one, and one reviewer says the main project is useful for experienced students too. Beginners may need to pause and rewind often. Anyone counting on instructor support should lower that hope, since several reviewers report questions going unanswered. The best fit is a hands-on learner who wants a finished short at the end.

Best forBeginners who want to build one finished robot short in Maya instead of learning tools in isolation.
Skip it ifYou need a reply from the instructor, or want deep character animation beyond a single project.

Pros

  • Follows one 15 second robot short from modeling to final render
  • Explains 3D concepts before the tools, which one newcomer says makes Maya easier to follow
  • Covers Substance Painter texturing and a short After Effects finish, not just Maya
  • Rated 4.6 from 236 reviews, with 161 of them five stars

Cons

  • Audio distorts or drops whenever the instructor renders while talking
  • Fast pace and quick shortcut use, with some menus shown only once
  • Several reviewers report unanswered questions, and the last update was June 2023
I learned a lot during this course: everything was explained clearly and it was really interesting.
Roberta Filippini, a student

Suits true beginners, though the fast pace means pausing often. Maya, Substance Painter and After Effects must be installed first.

This is coming from a 3ds Max user for modeling, I'm use to using Maya for my animation needs. I've had so frustrating times using maya for my attempts at character modeling in school but these videos are helping me understand how to work in Maya a lot better.

By R A on 11/27/2023

A very good course! The instructors were good about answering my questions until I got near the end of the course, then they stopped completely. There was a major issue where they would render while talking, which distorted the sound and made it incomprehensible till the render stopped. But for the most part everything was clear and explained well. Just wish they would go over more how they got to certain menus/features. Sometimes those weren't explained, and sometimes they were only mentioned once very fast in passing, which made it extremely hard for a beginner to find it in the videos to replicate.

By Giulia Filipputti on 8/20/2023

I appreciate the fact that before diving into the software and all of its functions, the teacher gives a more comprehensive explanation about 3D and all its aspects relating them to the different parts of the interface. Moreover the course is really easy to follow although I did not have any previous experience with Maya specifically.

By Paul Storm on 6/29/2023

This is a fantastic course and teaches you everything you need to know about Maya. The tutor is excellent and really keeps you engaged in the lesson, full of knowledge and explains things very well. I totally recommend for beginners and experienced students alike, as there's something for everyone in here.

By Arvin Jade Añana on 4/19/2023

It was good but still some of the video audio issues was not fixed. The audio breaks when he renders and you wont be able to understand what he is saying. This would have been a 5 if they fixed the broken audios.

By Tyler Vogel on 1/7/2023

This course is very informative, but for some reason its a little hard to understand the instructor because he goes a little too fast and for some reason the audio sort of glitches in and out sometimes.

By Scott David Schoenfeld on 8/7/2022

Explains the new technology components that I Scott David Schoenfeld have never known before in all my life about 3D Maya. It really gives me motivation to try not to give up at Maya. Espcially when I was critized for being a slow learner at not understanding the advanced technology at Full Sail University.

By Juan Luis Hernandez on 7/18/2022

Just started course and I like it so far as the instructor is very detailed and I feel I am following and learning effectively. Look forward to be able to construct my own 3-D animation using these principals and lessons.

By Anonymized User on 6/28/2022

Course is excellent until you get to the chapters dealing with UVs and afterwards-too much emphasis on fixing mistakes-which could be better covered as a separate topic(s) or course.

By Shaurya on 6/25/2022

I think that's a perfect course for me...As a 3D student i can say this course is worth buying. Edit: Hi Sir! I have something to say, That the course is great but there is one thing which is very annoying. It's like when you are rendering scenes in the course your voice cracks alot. And now i m on Class 40 Xgen Class where mostly part of the class i m not able to understand due to voice crack. So i think that's the only obstacle in the journey.
