Course Description
Any self-respecting game developer knows that getting their third-person player character right is one of the fundamental keys to a great gaming experience. Not only this but the controller, once developed, can be transferred from one game to another, making the code reusable and scalable. In this course, you will learn how to put together your own third-person character from scratch using freely available 3D models and animations, which you will learn how to control with C# in Unity. The idea behind this course is to take students through a series of workshops with the necessary tools to help them make a character, animate a character and program a character without the need of being able to model or animate and gain an understanding of the third-person character controller pipeline.
This course uses Unity 2020.1 or 2020.2, Input System 1.0, and Cinemachine 2.6.3
Learn how to program and work with:
3D Characters and Rigs
Humanoid Avatars
The Mecanim System
Avatar Masks
Animation Blend Trees
Unity's new Input System Package
Unity's Cinemachine Package for 'Character Following' Cameras
Adobe's Mixamo Service for Rigging and Animating 3D Characters
Third-Person Character Controllers
Mixing Root Motion with Physics Controls
What people are saying about Penny's courses:
Dr. Penny is a wonderful person and a true expert. All of her courses I've taken have been top notch and in my opinion there is no better teacher out there.
Allow me to say how hugely important this is for a person who is interested in certain types of game design. Creating games where you can create AI behaviors that support emergent situations.
I honestly love Holistic's teaching approach and I've never learned so much within a few hours about coding effectively with such detailed explanations!
This course focuses on the building of typical third-person character functionality including jumping, falling, weapon handling, shooting, and taking damage. By the end of this course, you will have a great third-person character controller that you can use in your own games or adapt for customized situations.

I'm happy I took this course. I've been skittish on character animations for a long time due to me observing how daunting of a task it is to tie them with player inputs (The feeling is made more complex when pertaining to NPCs, as their animations don't play on inputs, but states, I guess?). I'm more comfortable now knowing this process, and it's exciting to see a character respond to my inputs!

Monkey see, Monkey do, approach to teaching. I've not gained any insight so far, just a fast way to attach a movement script, no depth to what/why is being written, "just copy what I'm writing and hope you don't make a mistake". But they're some useful things for animations, where explanations are a little more thought out. Explaining what you could change here and there, you could do this instead of this. I wanted more in-depth on the scripting side :S What is a CallbackContext or Mathf.Approximately? What is the purpose in these? No mention on their behaviour.

The course was excellent and I learned everything necessary about a Third Person Controller. But I didn't like that the course doesn't include how to achieve >, just like most Third Person Controller-type games do today. For the rest it was a great experience and the instructor always managed to surprise me with all the solutions to the problems. Thanks. Gracias.

Great course to start with animation of your character! It shows you step by step how you can add and modify animations by triggering some events/ buttons and so on. I enjoyed very much the whole time and would like to see more about. Especial fine adjustment of transition between animations, reducing complexity of the code and how/where to search for methods you need to use. As a beginner is it hard to know which method to find and use to do something. But for me this was a great journey and i would recommend to get it! Big thanks to Penny! :)

Very good so far, had a problem with running Vis studio 2017 with Unity 2020 as it failed to recognise unity as project; it then it suddenly started recognising the unity format and I honestly cant tell you why. Very frustrating and perplexing. nearly a showstopper. Launching community 2020 made no difference. It would appear this is quite common judging by the forums. Its working now but a few wise words as to addressing this problem may be of help in the future. Learning a great deal but jumping is proving more complex than i imagined. Excellent as always. Thanks.

Penny, you are SUCH an outstanding teacher. Everything in this course worked out great, and best of all, you can really feel Penny's passion for teaching. She explains things clearly, over and over, never rushes through, and presents VERY manageable challenges. I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon her courses and oddly enough, I have ZERO interest in 3D games (yeah, I know, weird, but hey, I think 2D is where it's at these days... care to make a 2.5D course Penny?), however the quality of instruction here is so top-notch that if you are on a mission, like myself, to understand everything there is to know about Unity, you simply cannot skip over Penny's material. Thank you once again, I look forward to taking the 4 or 5 other classes of yours I just bought the other day XD.

I didn't expect all of the nuances of creating a third person character controller that this course opened my eyes to. Quite a bit more on Unity's mecanim side than I thought there would be. That said, the course stays true to form and shows you just the parts of mecanim needed (there's definitely more to it as a topic by itself) and gives the feeling of hitting the ground running (no pun intended) nice and quickly. Quality of the course in terms of content and delivery were top class. Very happy that it was the "new" Input System from Unity that was used as well; I see too many Unity devs stuck in their old ways unable to transition. What this means for me as someone who already knew the old system well enough anyway, is that I now also feel confident enough to take existing assets or older project code pieces using the old system, and could refactor them to using the new one without concern I'd be mucking something up.

Penny hugely overdelivers once again. Took this course on a whim, thinking I'd blast through it and pick up a couple of tricks here and there. Instead I was bombarded with useful information and techniques from start to finish. I'm now comfortable using third party animations and tailoring them to my needs at a much higher level than I ever expected going into this course. This course is also a really good introduction to the "new" input system for those of us who are still stubbornly clinging to the old way of doing things. Highly recommend.

This course was a lot more beginner focused than I expected. Penny is extremely knowledgeable, but she only just scratches the surface on certain topics, and does all the work in one large script, which can encourage bad habits, personally I would have loved a more in depth look on some of the elements, but I realize that my skill level is likely above the target audience of this course. Overall Penny is a fantastic instructor who has a real passion for what she does and it shows. I look forward to doing more content from her that is a little less beginner orientated.

Filling in some gaps in my Mixamo knowledge and some handy tips to prevent my toons looking like heavily injured zombies. A good way to see the new Input Controller in action. Learning a lot about splicing animations, this course has taught me plenty that I didn't even realise I needed. A great way to skill up in animation. If there is one thing I wasn't quite happy with its how the course left you with a prototype that feels unfinished, however I am considering it to be an intermediate course and focussed on a specific set of skills.
