Course Description

I bet in the last week you have looked at a t-shirt and though, that looks cool! I like that! I would wear that! We’re all really good at knowing what looks good, but do you know WHY it looks good? What makes that a great t-shirt?

This course is all about understanding WHY we like what we like. You can design. You may not know it yet, but you can. Design is a skill more than a talent, there are principles behind it. Principles that anybody can learn and practice.

I go over the design principles: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity. What do they mean, how do we use them

I walk you through how I design shirts using these principles

We learn the art of the critiq. We look at existing shirts and talk about how to make them better. And how to use our design principles that we have learned to do that and how you can apply that to some of your best selling shirts to take them to that next level.

I will be talking about what design tools are out there so whether you are just dipping your toe in and don’t want to spend a lot up front of if you’re already making money and want to learn more about what the professionals use, I cover that here.

I will talk about resources. Where do designers get all those great fonts? Where can I find illustrations that are safe to use on my shirts? How can I find and hire a designer? How can I give that designer feedback to make my shirts even better.

If you’re using Amazon Merch than you are in the design business, so understanding these fundamentals of design is the key skill to growing your business, whether you’re excited about designing your own shirts or if you have hired a designer and want to give better feedback that will take your shirts to the next level, this course is for you.

Brad Colbow

Hi, I’m Brad. I’m a professional graphic designer and Illustrator.

I’ve published comics, run conferences but what I’m best known for is running a Youtube channel where I talk about technology for illustrators. In that time I’ve published reviews on everything from the Surface Pro to the iPad pro. And everything in between.

I believe drawing and illustration is a journey, we are all constantly learning and getting better and I blog about that on my channel as well. I think anyone can learn to draw all it takes is practice.

It’s never to late to pick up a pencil and start learning.

I had a good time taking this course, and it gave me more solid insight, whether it comes to the fundamentals, fonts, what to look out for, and how to critique better. The instructor, Brad Colbow, is a good teacher, and has great skills, when it comes to explaining, simplify and showing various examples, that makes it easy to understand the concept of making better design for shirts. I can definitely recommend this course to others out there, who wish to learn about more about, how to make better shirt design.

I thought Brad did a great job of boiling down design concepts into an easy to understand course. I am a total beginner and I had never heard any of the info he provided. He presented it in an easy to understand and orderly fashion. He also provided many visual examples and showed various changes to his designs and explained why something worked or didn't work. I never felt overwhelmed by the info provided as he presented everything in a non-geeky way. I believe he has equipped me nicely with the start of my design foundation knowledge.

This course is excellent for the beginner looking to get into the T-Shirt business! Brad teaches you fundamental concepts that are crucial to help you create effective designs. He is very easy to understand with clear and concise instruction throughout the course. Whatever designs you plan on creating, you should definitely have this course in your library to ensure you are following the proper steps and avoid mediocre design mistakes. Well done Brad!

A great course that covers design principles and practical issues as opposed to software operation. There is one lesson on software which only covers what is available with some insights and recommendations. I thought this section would be better if it discussed the different categories of graphic software. Also the lesson titles in the first section are incorrectly labelled.

This is an excellent course! I really learned a lot about using design principles and structure to create eye catching designs. The presenter is very knowledgeable and his engaging manner captured and held my attention from start to finish. Now that I have completed this informational T-shirt design course feel better equipped to tackle some designs of my own with confidence. I especially loved the 'Critique' part of this course. Going through the creative process of de-constructing a design idea and then applying some fundamental design rules to come up with new and better T-shirt design. Bravo! I highly recommend this to anyone wishing to learn why certain designs work and others don't.

This course is great if you are looking for a valid and easy way to critique your designs, with a minimum of fuss. The instructor narrows down all the potential rules of design into just 4 criteria, and shares many critiques after several lessons explaining how these design rules are found in t-shirt designs specifically. Much of this material was a review for me, so I benefited a lot from the critiques module, and his checklist that builds through the course, to self-critique designs as shown.

I enjoyed this course. As a USA-born English-speaking person, I always watch at least one of the free videos to get a gauge for how well I can understand the instructor, as well as how engaging he/she is. Brad fit the bill there. I was also drawn to the fact that he clearly has artistic talent (there are courses out there where the instructor may be well-versed in the use of a design tool, but is sorely lacking on creative talent). As far as Udemy courses go, the course is probably not "great" on the value scale, as there's only about 2 hours of content, but I knew that going in and actually liked the idea of being able to learn something new in just a couple of hours. Brad speaks pretty quickly, and conveys a good amount of info in the number of words he uses, too, so that's a plus. I can spend more than $10 on a crappy 2 hour movie, so $10 and 2 hours of my time for something that teaches me something new is not a bad value, IMO. If you are completely new to design concepts, I think this is a great intro course. In my case, while I've never been formally trained in the Arts, I've done some (not so great) illustration since I was a kid, and later got into graphic design (on my own), so I already have a pretty good idea of what looks good and what doesn't. But it was still nice to learn a couple of the art industry terms for things I already had a feel for. I usually over-research things before jumping in, so this one is my fault, as I could have learned more about what the course lacked, simply by skimming through the course content/chapters, but I want to elaborate on specifics, as I think Brad could improve the course by adding these things: 1) I wrongly assumed based on the name of the course, that it would provide some sort of info about Merch by Amazon. I had never heard of it (I was searching for a course about vector graphic programs when I found another course by Brad that I bought and then found this one). I had told my daughter that it could be a fun side-business for her (or her and I) to design some t-shirts, mugs, etc., so when I saw this course I bought it, too. I had to do a quick Google search to find out what Merch was. But I was hoping the course would provide more details about setting up a Merch account, maybe some of the ins/outs of Merch, how to market your stuff, etc. Nope. Again, shame on me for not skimming the chapters pre-purchase, but I recommend that Brad add at least one high-level section about Merch and setting up a Merch account. 2) None of the websites or products that Brad mentions are documented in any attached resources (he has no resources). Not a huge deal, since the course is short and the lessons are short, so you can go back and find out the things he mentions pretty quickly/easily, but I'd recommend that he add some written resources pages, with links to the things he mentions (and maybe some extra things he didn't mention). 3) Most of the focus is on fonts. Brad has talent in graphic design and some of the shirts incorporates some of those designs, but he really doesn't offer any instruction for the basics of making your own vector images, or what makes a particular image well-suited (or poorly suited) for a t-shirt. He also doesn't seem to talk about external resources for finding free/inexpensive vector images, but it's possible that the sites he mentions (mostly focused on obtaining free/inexpensive fonts) are also among the best places to find free/inexpensive vector images...but I suspect that there are several other places he could easily provide mention of. Again, it's probably not realistic of me to think that a 2 hour course would provide much, if any, instruction on creating vector artwork, but I think it could be beneficial for him to add a quick 10 minute video where he creates a simple/cute/funny vector image for use in a t-shirt. He could even use it as a tie-in for recommending one of his other courses for getting more detailed instruction.

Was great to explore how to actually put a T-Shirt together and how not to do it as well! Brad is a great instructor, he explains things in great detail and doesn't rush, so you can actually yake things in and try them on screen in the software at the same time. It was great that he made the course about the design and not about what software to do it in, but it was good to get his point of view on software. I already use Affinity Designer and have completed his course on that, so it will be good to use his process in Affinity.

The course was awesome about designing ideas but it lacks practical projects. The teacher should have gone through all the practical steps that how he make changes step by step. Its only a verbal critique which is difficult for a newbie to understand.

Wow! I now have a much clearer idea of why my existing t shirt designs are not selling on Merch by Amazon. Thanks to your brilliant explanations and simplified design principles checklist; I can now go about creating my designs with a lot more confidence. I loved seeing and hearing how you personally changed each of the t-shirt designs you were asked to critique for the better ; just by applying the design principles you taught us in the beginning of the course. I appreciate the amount of gold nuggets of information you have revealed in this course from your own personal experience. It definitely makes me want to join your Facebook group and subscribe to your You Tube channel
