Course Description
In this course we will do a dragon in Blender...
...and a sword...
...okay, and a girl.
So basically we will make a girl with a sword and a dragon around her from scratch in this Blender character creation course!
My name is Niko and i am a 3D character artist with over 15 years of experience in the game industry. I have more than 22 000 students in my courses on Zbrush, Blender, 3D character creation and anatomy.
The concept is made by Sora Kim
We will start by making the head (as always with the creations of my characters), then we will make the rest of the body, where i will tell you the specifics of the female body sculpting. After that we will do the sword and turn special attention to its handle. Next will be time to do the dragon. We will make the curved body, and then add scales efficiently using some interesting techniques. After the dragon is ready, we will jump to make some ropes, which will take some time. Then we will refine various things to get ready for the lighting and render. Lights, material tests and render as well as turntable and shadow plane will be last in our list.
The Dragon girl in Blender course is probably one of the most complicated courses in Blender i have done, it is mainly for intermediate and advanced users. But beginners with alot of patience could also try it :). But for them i recommend taking one of my two beginner courses before you do this to yourself :).

I have interest in arts since i was a very little kid. I was drawing all the time at school and at home. I was barely going out to play with the other kids, and later go to night clubs. Drawing and books were my passions. Later i became a Graphic Designer and then i was 3D character artist at Gameloft for 15 years. I have more than 10 years of experience with Zbrush, but now i use the amazing free software Blender and make courses and characters with its help.

Prior to doing this course, I have done some sculpting on zbrush. I would say I am beginner-intermediate. I think this course was quite hard because sculpting in blender feels so different than Zbrush, but I pushed through despite the frustration. The hair is particularly hard for me, but everything else was a tad bit easier. The recording quality stayed consistent, though from videos 36 to the end, somewhat often the video lags because Niko is also turning on render mode in Blender. While I was initially put off by the off-topic commentary Niko goes off tangents with in each of his videos, I've grown fond of it. Others might feel the same, others might not. On average, with other responsibilities I have, I can do 1-2 videos a day. When I am free the entire day, 3-4 videos can be done. I think one forty-minute video translates to about four hours of working. Roughly counting, I think that's about 180 hours' worth of working on the desk? Including googling about fixing an error, or how to turn off face sets, and the like. Those 180 hours were spread over the duration of 3 months. I initially used Blender 4.3.2 but then moved to Blender 5.1.2. Most settings are compatible, or can be worked around (bloom is now glare in compositing, etc.). BlenderKit and other add-ons whatsoever work pretty well still, but the blue dragon's skin material (the one called Pomegranate Skin) no longer exists in BlendetKit, and so I would suggest that Niko next time provide the (unaltered) materials in the project files in case Blenderkit no longer has the materials Niko used in this course. This course's model has 3d printing in mind, so retopology is not taught here. So if you are looking around to make pipeline-proper models, I suggest you watch and learn via Niko's free and complete game character course on YouTube instead. This was a very hard course for me. I'm glas I can finish it. Thank you, Niko!

Overall good and many helpful tips. I'd prefer a bit more editing. While it can be beneficial to see how the instructor tackles problems, some of it is just irrelevant and time consuming.

This is my 3rd course with Niko (out of 4 that I've already bought) And I cannot stress enough how much this courses are worth every cent. Clear, objective and functional. You will really learn how to use the software and create characters of your own.

Just started the course and so far, I like how you explained your approach of a 2D reference. Second I like how calm your voice is when explaining and not just saying random jokes all the time. If I get more confident with sculpting maybe I will buy more of your courses. Great Work!

very good course, very interesting subject to work on, it's better to have an intermediate level on blender to be able to follow the course in order to get round some of the problems encountered. I've never done any sculpting myself, but I think I'm doing pretty well, as I know blender well in general. I can't wait to get to the end and see what I've made, even if it's not a carbon copy of the reference model.

This guy is a real pro and it shows. He is very good. But you gotta watch out for every little move he makes. He does more than he says in the video and its normal, if he said everything the course would be 10 times bigger. Also very good at teaching, explains the underlying concepts, and funny. 1 thing I didn't like is that he has the reference over the hotkeys so we can't see what he is pressing (At least in the first lesson that I just did). 2nd thing is, like another guy, said it would be cool if there was a section for retopo after the sculpt is finished.

Niko is a great instructor he makes everything clear and easy to follow while at the same time keeping it entertaining. Seeing what he can do in blender is inspiring letting you know that regardless of software you can make amazing art.

The character creation course is good overall, but it lacks a section on retopology, which is important for making clean models. Including this would make the course better and help learners understand the entire character creation process. However, the current content is well-organized and covers many essential aspects of character design.

I was very pleased to take this course. As always, Nikolay presents information in an interesting way, sometimes with humor, and I like this presentation. I'm looking forward to new courses

The best teacher and the best courses! Very clearly explains, it is obvious that he knows how to teach (it is not many people can do), and I think the teacher can read minds! I have a question when taking the course, and he takes and answers it, how does he do it?!
