Effective Delegation for New Managers (Udemy.com)
How to delegate tasks the right way (and free up your busy schedule to focus on more important activities)

Our take
Based on the ratings of 11,568 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
Hassan Osman built this as a short course for people who just got their first direct reports. It runs about 36 minutes across 15 lectures, most of them a couple of minutes long. The syllabus walks through delegation in three stages: what and who to delegate before, how to brief the task during, and how to check in and give feedback after. Nothing is required to start. It is aimed squarely at new managers and team leads, not senior leaders looking for strategy. Think checklist, not full management program.
Reviewers like how little time it wastes. One calls it perfect in structure, with no filler or stories, and another says it helped put together a standard template for their team. More than 10,000 of the 11,568 ratings are four or five stars. The complaints are small and consistent. Several people say the volume jumps from video to video. One reviewer found the slide reading dull. Another wanted more practical examples, especially for what to do when delegated work comes back short of expectations.
The course was last updated in September 2024, a little over two years ago, but the advice is about habits rather than software, so it has aged fine. About 32,000 students have taken it. At this length and a low price it is easy to justify as a first pass. Anyone who wants role-plays, quizzes or deep coverage of difficult conversations will need something longer. As a quick framework to run through before the next handoff, it does the job.
Pros
- Lectures run about two minutes each, 36 minutes total, so it fits in one sitting
- Clear before, during and after structure that one reviewer turned into a team template
- No filler or stories, with a recap at the end of each section
- More than 10,000 of 11,568 ratings are four or five stars
Cons
- Volume levels differ from video to video, and some intro and outro audio is quiet
- No quizzes or exercises, and few examples of delegation going wrong
- Slides can feel flat, and the last update was September 2024
It was a perfect course in structure: no time wasting, no useless information or stories just for the sake of it. A really good lesson plan that I would recommend.
Beginner level, built for people who recently started managing one or more employees.

"Short courses for busy managers"
My name is Hassan Osman and I help busy business leaders and managers work more effectively with their teams.
My focus is on three main 'future of work' areas: managing in virtual & hybrid environments, using AI to improve productivity, and enhancing communication among team members.
I write about those topics in my free weekly newsletters, "Leadership 80/20" and "AI for Leaders."
A little about me:
Most recently, I was SVP of Professional Services at NWN Carousel (a $1B organization focused on enabling hybrid work), leading a team of 200+ project managers and engineers on delivering cloud communication services to our customers.
Previously, I was a Director at Cisco Systems, where I led project and program management teams on delivering complex projects for Cisco's customers.
Prior to Cisco, I was a manager at Ernst & Young, where I analyzed failing projects at Fortune 500 companies, and recommended solutions to fix them.
I was also a research assistant at Harvard University, where I studied issues related to virtual teams.

The slides and reading of them were not engaging. I had to take a break to nap. The audio of when the gentleman was talking at the beginning and end was way softer than the rest of the course. The End slides for every section was not necessary. For such a short course it was very boring. This needs to show more video of the speaker with better audio and I could read the slides myself rather than having someone do it for me.

It's a fantastic course. My only suggestion for improvement, is the volume level of the videos are not consistent. I had to adjust the volume level when starting certain videos because it's either too high, or too low.

This course was straight to the point, outlining a few key steps that should be the focus for a new manager who wants to improve delegation. I found the content very useful and will apply it in my day-to-day work. I wish there were more practical examples and guidance on what to do when following these steps but things don’t go as planned and the results fall short of expectations.

I recently started playing the role of a Tech lead and this course really helped me reflect on what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong. I have been able to implement the learnings from this course and have been benefitting from it.

The template brought this from a 4.5 star to 5 star. Wasn't sure what to think when I saw a sub 1 hour course, but the material really carried it's value. Well worth the money and time.

Although a few lessons are hard to understand at first without any example, it has to be replayed over and over again to get a better understanding of those lessons. Anyway, this is a good course to learn about delegation, especially it's very short and easy to apply. Thank you.
