Our take
Based on the ratings of 116 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Tomas George's GarageBand course is a short, beginner-friendly tour of Apple's free music app. It runs about five hours across 67 lectures in 13 sections. It starts with the interface and Apple Loops, then moves through MIDI, recording audio, editing, arranging, mixing effects, automation, the Drummer track, amp simulations and export. A Mac is required, and it has to be recent enough to run GarageBand smoothly. The course was last updated in August 2026, so it is current.
Reviewers like the structure. One says the instructor goes through the interface systematically, which matters for learning the app, and another says each topic is explained without an overload of information. Two call it a good refresher, and a first-time user calls it perfect for seeing what is possible. The complaints are mild. One student found the delivery fast and hard to follow, and got by by replaying lessons. Another noticed a clashing sample and an off-beat drum in the examples. Across 116 reviews, 72 are five stars, 34 are four stars and 10 are three stars. None are lower.
This is a gentle start, not a deep dive. Effects and mixing get 13 lectures and about an hour, so EQ, compression and reverb are covered at an introductory level. It is a paid course for software that costs nothing, and one reviewer calls the cost great value. It is also fairly new, with just over a thousand students so far. For a newcomer to GarageBand it is a sensible first stop. Experienced users will outgrow it quickly.
Pros
- Walks through the interface step by step, which a first-time user says makes the app easy to navigate
- Covers the full path from loops and MIDI to recording, automation, amp sims and export
- Reviewers say topics are clearly explained without information overload, and the pace is easy to follow
- Short at about five hours, so a beginner can finish it and start making songs quickly
Cons
- Fast delivery was hard to follow for at least one reviewer, who replayed lessons to keep up
- Mixing and mastering stay at the basics level, so experienced users will find little new
- Mac only, and the Mac must be recent enough to run GarageBand smoothly
As a first time user of GarageBand, this course is perfect for showing you what's possible and how to navigate it. Splendid!
Best for true beginners. The All Levels tag is generous, since mixing and mastering stay at an introductory depth.

Great course, as well as refresher! I also learned some new skills and tips that will improve the mixing and mastering process.

There are some settings that I never knew that could be helpful, and this could be pretty good for beginners. That being said, the "Come on!" sample clashes compared to the rest of the melody, and other minor problems occurred. An example includes the drum in one of the courses being off-beat. Overall, I did learn a bit about the other plugins, and I enjoyed the course.

I have learn many things. I have a small problem understanding your english as you talk very fast and not clearly for my understanding. But it is getting better and I just listen to each lesson many times to understand and goes well. It also took some time to get familiar with Garage Band surroundings, to learn where the you find the things you need. So far so good.
