Course Description

Welcome to my course, How to Improve Your Figure Drawing - Step by Step!

My name is Robert A. Marzullo and I am the author of the book "Learn to Draw Action Heroes."  I have worked in comics, storyboards, and 3D animation.  For each of these fields I had to be able to draw the human figure quickly and in a way that was convincing to my viewers.  In this course I share what I have learned over those 20 years.

This is a basic approach to figure drawing. This entire course on how to draw the human figure is 7 hours 45 minutes and growing.  I share techniques that I have used over the years to my illustrations and storyboards for television.  You will learn how to systematically break down the various parts of the body into simple shapes. This allows you to gain confidence on the subject and use a workflow that will keep you productive.  As I illustrate each area step by step you will follow along and learn from my studies.

In this course you will learn

  • Gesture Drawing

  • The Benefits of Timed Studies

  • Negative Space Drawing

  • Foreshortening

  • The Body in Perspective

  • Organic Lines Vs. Angular

  • Line of Action

  • How to Daw Hands

  • 3 Main Masses of the Body

Updated on 12-2-2022 -  I am including a section of drawing from life.  This will give you a better understanding on how to use the technique in this course in a practical way.

You get to share your work with the other students in this course and grow together.  Currently there are over 12,000 STUDENTS enrolled in this course.  That is a lot of like minded figure drawing artists, so be sure to share your work and your thoughts along the way!

Great Figure Drawings will separate your artwork form your peers.  It is a skill that is extremely sought after and admired.  Once you learn to confidently draw the human figure you will gain more recognition very quickly.  It takes time to master so be patient with yourself and dedicate the time needed each day.  I have designed this course to help you grow your skills easily and effectively.

This course will give you insight into how I create my artwork and create poses from my imagination.  I also share what techniques I use to improve my knowledge of the human form while studying.  Things like gesture drawings, timed studies of the pose, negative space drawing, foreshortening, perspective, organic versus angular lines, and much more.  You will also be given a copy of the art files as a downloadable PDF that I have created here so that you can work along and study from them.  By the end of this course you should be more confident in constructing your figure drawings from the  mind and have a better understanding of the human form.

You will also learn how to draw Gestures of the body using methods such as CSI. Making use of action lines and timed studies to help you improve your drawing abilities. I am also very receptive to my students. So if you have any suggestions or questions I am here to help!

Updated Content - I have also included 6 lessons on drawing various hands poses.  You will learn what to pay attention to when drawing the hands so that they are more believable and expressive.

Bonus lectures - How to Draw and Shade Muscular arms. In those lessons I go over 3 different arm poses with various rendering techniques.

The tips and tricks from this course will make the process of drawing complex body poses much easier to accomplish.  Good luck with your art and I can't wait to see your progress!

I now share my knowledge in digital art and computer software through online platforms such as Udemy and have a growing Youtube channel as well. Good stuff, but at times a bit too quick-paced and not enough depth.

Robert Marzullo explains the key techniques, concepts, and fundamentals of drawing the human body from imagination in a clear and approachable way. The course is well-structured, with each section logically organized and gradually increasing in difficulty. Most importantly, the breakdown of the material into focused sections makes the learning process much easier to absorb and far less overwhelming. As always, a truly outstanding course.

This is a great course definetely would recommend. There are practise sheets too for practising. I have also taken his other courses on anatomy and figure drawing the body in action all these courses(not yet started). All these three courses do complement one another. Great for beginners and beginner-intermediates. The section on hands were a added bonus for me. I think after this its just sheer practise. Thank you.

Some of RAM's lessons in multiple courses are bogged down by a lack of focus and mistakes (which he often points out and lingers on). There is still some of that in this series but he turns it into part of the creative and drafting processes, encouraging you to learn from the mistakes and encouraging you to allow your style to dictate part of your art direction. Most valuably, he describes the small nuances of his own art style and how they differ from the commonly accepted rules. He acknowledges that neither one or the other is right or wrong and that his art style is not anatomically perfect, but that developing an efficient and satisfying work flow is as important as any other part of the art.

This is a good course for learning the basic concepts of anatomy and figure drawing. Seeing the way the instructor broke down the body and the methods he used was very helpful. I had never taken a figure drawing course before this, so it had a very drastic effect on my art. I would recommend this for any amateur artist who hasn't studied anatomy yet and wants a good foundation to work with. I gave it 4/5 because despite being a very efficient course, I would have liked more single-focus lessons breaking down parts of the body, particularly the hands and feet in different angles and poses.

By Jose Perez on 11/14/2020

The instructor is great! I highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to become better artist no matter what type of art form your endgame might be.

First of all, I need to thank you for sharing your knowledge; you are an expert in the course; your explanation is clear and easy to understand. I never draw any characters, but I think this course is a good way to guide me to begin; I will improve and follow your guide.

By Christine Bensley on 11/1/2020

Great course, a lot of info.

I learn a lot and I finally know how to draw every each body parts. It truly help my art style be more better, even without knowing the body anatomy that much. This course gave me a lot tips and tricks on how I can draw a person properly. Though I got a bit of a habit of drawing from slender people to buff. Xd.

By Wilberth Omar Contreras Canto on 10/6/2020

I was having troubles with my figures so Robert's insight on how to approach them is really helped, I would recommend to follow along and have some knowledge of the anatomy shapes.
