HTML Web Development Crash Course (Udemy.com)

Learn how to create websites and web applications for the internet.

Created by: Frahaan Hussain

Last updated December 2017

Our take

Based on the ratings of 405 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

Frahaan Hussain's course is a short first look at HTML. It runs 103 minutes across 17 lectures, plus a bonus lecture that is really a promo for his other courses. It covers basic tags, adding media to a page, and a light touch of CSS and JavaScript. The only requirement is basic computer skills. About 35,000 students have enrolled and the rating is 4.5 from 405 reviews. Think of it as a sampler, not a path to building websites.

Most reviewers are happy. About three in four ratings are four or five stars, and the usual comment is that it is a solid starting point for beginners. The complaints are consistent, though. Several people call it very basic, and one says too much is left for the student to work out alone. One wanted a step by step project. Another said the tags were shown without explaining why you would pick one over another. A few found the delivery unclear.

The material was last updated in December 2017. HTML basics move slowly, so the core tags still apply, but the data lists no quizzes or coding exercises, which is thin next to the description's promise of practice challenges. At under two hours it is a low-commitment way to find out whether web development appeals. One reviewer points to W3Schools as a free alternative. Take this as a warm-up, then move on to something project-led.

Best forAbsolute beginners who want a quick, low-pressure look at what HTML tags do before committing to a longer course.
Skip it ifYou want to build a real site step by step, or need more than a light touch of CSS and JavaScript.

Pros

  • Short at 103 minutes, so a beginner can finish it in an evening or two
  • Reviewers call it a solid starting point that covers the basic HTML tags
  • Asks for nothing beyond basic computer skills, with no coding background assumed
  • About three in four of 405 ratings are four or five stars

Cons

  • Several reviewers call it very basic, and one says too much is left for students to do alone
  • Last updated in 2017, and the data lists no quizzes or coding exercises
  • No step by step project, and one reviewer felt the choice of tags went unexplained
Provided a good basic introduction to different elements of HTML. Solid starting point.
Ian Jones, a student

Beginner level fits, since it assumes only basic computer skills, though one reviewer says a little prior HTML helps.

Lo más basico de html para entender lo que significan las etiquetas y ver como funcionan. Si no tienes ni idea de hmtl te sirve para que te familiarices.

I am very surprise with one thing that is "Hello in this HTML tutorial". How one can speak repeatedly one sentence with such consistency and accuracy.

it is good as a crash course , will let you see the effect of a bunch of things in HTML , when you try another larger course you will be ready and familiar with many things which is good for a crash course .

By Arutosh Gurung on 8/21/2016

Very easy to understand and get grasp of and there is explanation of everything that is new to the user and gives very insightful understanding of the topic. 5/5 for me.

I'm half way through this course now, and finding it very useful as a starting point for someone not accustomed to any web development/HTML knowledge at all. The lectures are a great length to pick up when you have a spare 10/15 minutes - and though basic, are very informative. The pace is slow enough to help remember the new content and reinforces content learnt from previous lectures. This series focuses on the HTML part of web development (the structure of a website), and only briefly touches on CSS (the style). The lecturer will be introducing another crash-course for that in the future and once that is done I'd expect the courses as a pair to help you go from 0 to a nice looking website!
