Course Description
In this course, you'll learn the basics of 2D game development using HTML5/Javascript and the excellent Phaser game engine. The course will focus on character movement for a platform game and introduce level creation using the Tiled level editor.
We'll cover how to build a character with various moves and animations. We'll use a physics engine to get the jump and horizontal movement feeling just right similar to classic games like Mario Bros. We’ll then create a simple platform game level and setup the collision logic for our character to interact with it.
Along the way to building a super fun 2D platform game, we’ll be looking at some best practices on structuring and architecting a game project by starting with a robust boilerplate that you can use for any game, as well as exploring the finite state machine pattern as a means of controlling our character’s movements and animations. This will give you a solid foundation for continuing your journey into game development and give you a kick start in creating a full blown game!
If any of the above sounds a bit daunting, don’t worry, the course videos will explain everything in a way that’s suitable even for a complete beginner. While a little familiarity with Javascript would be beneficial, we’ll be doing everything step-by-step in enough detail that you can follow along. Basically, if you have an interest in how 2D platform games work and would like to have a go at creating your own, this course is for you.

Hi, I’m Jed. I’ve helped thousands of people learn how to develop their own games and I’m excited to teach you what I know. I’ve been a professional web and game developer for over 10 years. In that time I’ve produced many mini-games in the form of playable ads for products like Candy Crush, Idle Minder Tycoon, Hearthstone and Final Fantasy XV to name a few. I also co-founded a small indie games development studio with releases on the iOS App Store.
I have a bachelor’s degree in computer science but my skills in game development are mostly self taught and I believe anyone is capable of learning how to build games. My step-by-step, project-based approach to teaching is easy to follow and will have you building games that you can be proud of in no time.
I can’t wait to see what you can come up with!
Jed.

Even though the last course update was years ago - this is all still very relevant to phaser 3 (and probably also the upcoming v4 release). It's a good course. The instructor is knowledgeable; easy to listen to; and the material is presented well. (Before starting this course I already knew the basics of Phaser.js. I think the instructor does a good job of explaining things but if you are completely new - you should expect having to do some research on your own using the official Phaser documentation and online resources).

Just finished the course and I really enjoyed it. There were great examples that are easy to build on. I don't believe anything was too vague, but I will say that JavaScript experience is a must, and it would help to have experience using libraries, although the last is not a requisite. I've been coding with JavaScript for several years in a professional capacity, and I thought this course gave a nice jumping off point for getting up and running, but left plenty of room for doing things differently if you're more experienced. It is not a start to finish tutorial, if that is what you are looking for, but it gives you a great idea of functionality, methods, classes, and how to structure a project. I bought the course because I've never done any game animation, but my 15 year old son wants to learn coding for games, and I thought JS would be a good starting point. I feel like I am much better prepared to teach him using Phaser. Overall, very informative and well done. I would definitely recommend.

This is an excellent course for learning Phaser. He goes over basically, all you need for creating the beginning of a Phaser 3 platform game. I took off half a point for the fact that it uses an older version of Phaser 3 and Tiled. (Not the author's fault, though), Also, one catch is the Node webpack Phaser plugin used requires an older version of webpack to work. I had to search online to "fix" the webpack.config.js file. This took a little bit of time, as I'm not really a javascript developer (but do have a lot of experience programming in general). The course went just the right pace and did a great job introducing one to some simple Phaser 3 techniques.

I really like how the videos are broken down and how he went over the documentation and where to look to figure out how to create certain effects. the course is a little outdated, the boilerplate project needed to have the package versions updated and then when he has us use 'this.input' my game didn't like that so I had to use 'this.inputK' and then for some reason with the state machine library the touchdown state wasn't working for me until I added a second check to make sure we weren't jumping. above all though I really liked this course and I enjoyed that it was short but also felt like it was pointing me in the right direction if I wanted to continue the project on my own.

The tutorial was a good intro to Phaser. It was also detailed in showing learners where to find free game assets, how to modify assets for use using free tools and how to create levels. Jed explained everything very well and clearly. The only problem was that the topics were not broad enough to give learners an idea of what a complete game system in Phaser could look like. It did not have to cover everything but could have had sections on enemies/obstacles, health etc. The hardest part of learning to build any software system is learning how to compose various components/systems together. The tutorial was still worth it because it was only about 4.5 hours long, which makes for a good intro to Phaser.

I purchased this course really hoping for a step by step (as promised in the intro) example, as there is far too much on Udemy with pre written code. I was hoping this was different. I am disappointed this looks as though is just another clone and edit setup,Whilst its not hard to backward engineer as I am a developer by trade, I do feel bad for beginners who are going to miss out on a ton of interesting and useful intro stuff on npm and node, especially why node is used here over static javascript, yet this is merely skimmed over in favour of a pre written setup. So no explanation of using npm init, and what has gone on in producing this existing boilerplate. I feel this is a huge detriment to the course. Its also extremely annoying to see a complete webpack setup too, whilst this may have its uses, without explanation, its a pretty big inclusion without any detailed explanation,I will pause the video and simply update my package.json accordingly, but simply telling the user to clone the started code and then run npm install, omits quite a bit of information. Setup looks further obfuscated by what looks like a fair bit of boilerplate, which I am truly hoping is explained in detail and not just brushed over also!So far not a great start, I am really hoping the graphics and tile-sets etc are not also pre drawn, and just a downloadable resource, but we can follow along and draw them ourselves, I really dont wish to use others work when learning!I really want to like this course, over the many others I have tried, I will update this review if things change in the course, if not steer clear if you want a "step by step" detailed intro and not another clone and edit

This course is just what I needed to jumpstart my gaming career. I am a complete novice in this area but I feel I have a good understanding to begin to challenge myself. There is so much documentation to read, it feels overwhelming but I am so ready to take a deep dive and learn further. Thanks for the effort invested in delivering a comprehensive course for beginners. I have only one request, I kindly request that all the suggestions made by Jed Hastwell at the end of the last lesson, be added as new features to the game in this course or a new course to complete the game should be publish.

I've taken some other game courses in the past, even ones with Phaser. This ones stands out in how smoothly and quickly he teaches all the basic concepts, from game logic, to assets, and level editing. This course gave me a really great foundation and starting point to make games. And it is quick and clear enough that I can always come back for a refresher if I have to drop game dev for a while because of school or work. Thank you so much for the course!

Very comprehensive course, which gives very solid foundations to start programming simple but very detailed JS video games with the support of some very well explained tools. The application of the finite state machine pattern is very interesting. I’m from Italy and my English level is not perfect but I found this course very understandable and I can't wait to practice all the skills that I learned. I’d love to ask Jed to do to a video about sound effect, it would be very interesting. In conclusion I would like to give 10 stars because 5 in my opinion are not enough surely in the future I will buy other Jed courses.

I really like how this turned out, Jed is very knowledgeable in game development. He used modern JavaScript tooling which I really like. He introduced the power of state machines which is very interesting. He covered as many edge cases he can without going overboard. The pace and length of each section makes it very easy to consume. All of the essential tools he used in this course are freely available. I am looking forward to more content, keep it up
