Course Description

This is an essential typography course. Books, almost more than any project, need superlative typography to enable your readers to actually read the book. Without these skills and knowledge, your books will be compromised before you even release them.
You will discover why InDesign is necessary for book production. Word, and word processors in general, do not even have the capability of producing excellent typography.
This course covers the basic concepts you need to understand before you start putting your book together: how to set up your documentsize, margins, and column width; Typography: what it is and how you produce excellent, readable typography so you can design your paragraphs to enable your readers to comfortably enjoy reading your book. By the time you finish the course, you will be amazed at all you didn't know about typography, readability, and how to communicate with your readers [or the readers of your clients].Who this course is for:
  • An author or graphic designer who needs to produce better quality books and ebooks,
  • The designer who needs typographic skill

A beginner, great course!

By John Petrocelli

I've read David Bergsland's Indesign books. This course is great to hear him mentor you through the book and course with additional details. It's a very detailed course, telling you just what you need to do if you want to produce books and design books, that are readable and artfully crafted on the fly. I would have paid him a lot of money to have him mentor me, explain a little more the concepts in his book with illustrations, but it's all here, right in this course. And at this price, it's a steal.

Oh my god, the lecture sections are far too long, typically containing 80% disorganised waffle and 20% need to know.

In general the author appears to wander around the topic in an amateurish fashion, using what I can only describe as a poorly constructed PowerPoint presentation with terrible colours and graphics.

The very first part left me wanting to shoot myself within 2 minutes of the 10 min 24 seconds available.

I cannot recommend this course, I feel I totally wasted my money

It is already very clear that the instructor does know what he is talking about

I am Hearing Impaired with 80% loss but I wear hearing aids which returns most hearing back. I rely on Subtitles and Captions all the time. The Auto Captions Udemy use is usually reliable depending on the Teachers accent. Good clear English voices always work well.

The Teacher of this course has a barely understandable accent which even the Auto captions have trouble interpreting. Auto Captions have a pretty good rate of clarity when it works with clear accents, this course is an example of what kind of accents should NOT be used.

As for the course, I gave up halfway through, the tests are awful due to the Teacher does not keep up with the students progress that I am aware of. The Teachers own Books are awful and his style looks like it's stuck in the early 90's. Awful fonts and terrible graphics.

This course is really for the eBook nerds who want to know more about Fonts and Typefaces etc. Otherwise a total waste of time. Did not learn how to make a Book. At all.

I didn't pay to have a history lesson; I paid to learn how to use Adobe Indesign to produce print and ebooks. I was hoping for a more step-by-step instruction.

Because of all your efforts, long hours of labor for over 30 years. It seeps through. I feel honored to have found you.

By Gilbert Reid

very interesting, very clear; I'm a bit impatient with introductions - but here the introduction is very useful and gives a clear context for what I am trying to learn and why I am trying to learn it.

By Renee Tresko

A lot of extra words - lessons so far are approximately 80% conversational and 20% instructional. While the conversation is interesting and valuable and the instructor knows the industry, my time is such that I am more interested in getting to the "how to" instead of so much history.
