Adobe InDesign CC - Essentials Training Course (Udemy.com)

Learn beginner layout design and typography and build brochures, magazines, forms, and social templates from scratch.

Created by: Daniel Walter Scott

Last updated July 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 19,611 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

A project-first InDesign course for people who have never opened the app, with a curriculum updated in July 2026. Across roughly 12 hours and 99 lectures the course walks through a flyer, a tri-fold brochure, a fillable PDF form, a full magazine, and a set of social media templates, each from a mock client brief. That structure suits beginners who learn by doing and small business owners who need real marketing pieces, not just tool tours. Photoshop or Illustrator users will also find the sections on links, styles, and packaging fill in the gaps between the Adobe apps.

With more than 19,000 reviews and a 4.7 average, the praise is consistent: clear step-by-step explanations, good pacing, and the assignments with their client generator get singled out as a nice touch. Even a long-time InDesign user says they found features they didn't know existed. The main complaint is about who is teaching. The course is sold under Daniel Walter Scott's name, but the refreshed lessons are mostly delivered by Khara Plicanic. One two-star reviewer bought it expecting Dan's style and was disappointed, while still admitting Khara is knowledgeable and easy to follow. If you liked Dan's other courses, expect a different voice here.

There are no quizzes, and you need your own copy of Adobe InDesign CC before starting; the opening lessons only cover downloading and setting it up. Unlike the multi-app Adobe CC masterclass listed alongside it, this one sticks to InDesign alone, and a separate Advanced Training Course sits next to it for afterward. Anyone wanting a first serious pass at layout and print production should find this the safe pick.

Best forComplete beginners who want to build a brochure, a form, and a magazine rather than sit through tool-by-tool theory.
Skip it ifYou bought it for Dan Scott's voice, or you already know InDesign and want the Advanced course instead.

Pros

  • Most sections are a project from a mock client brief: flyer, tri-fold, fillable form, magazine, social templates
  • Refreshed in July 2026, so the lessons are current rather than a 2017 recording left to age
  • Reviewers say Khara's step-by-step explanations are easy to follow, even for veteran users
  • Covers the unglamorous production side: preflight, packaging, missing links and fonts, bleeds

Cons

  • Sold under Dan Scott's name but mostly taught by Khara Plicanic, which upset at least one buyer
  • No quizzes or practice tests; the six assignments are the only checks on progress
  • You need your own copy of Adobe InDesign CC; the course only shows how to download and set it up
Amazing course, the instructor Khara explains step by step in detail which makes it easy to understand.
Sara Altamimi, a student

Genuinely beginner-friendly; no design background needed, but a working copy of InDesign CC is required from lesson one.

Course Description

Hey there, I'm Dan, and I'm not just a designer, but an Adobe Certified Professional and Adobe MAX Master Award winner. For this InDesign Essentials class, I worked closely with instructor Khara Plicanic to create an updated curriculum that's in-depth and hands-on in all the right ways. Join me and Khara and let's embark on an incredible journey learning Adobe InDesign!

Overview

Conquer Adobe InDesign with designer and educator Khara Plicanic! If you’ve ever thought InDesign looked intimidating, overly technical, or just plain boring, this class is here to change your mind. Through practical projects, approachable instruction, and plenty of creative exploration, Khara shows you that InDesign can actually be fun, intuitive, and incredibly powerful.

In beginner-friendly lessons, you’ll learn how to use InDesign as a professional layout tool for real-world design work, from flyers and brochures to forms, magazines, and social media templates. Along the way, you’ll develop the systems, habits, and workflows that make InDesign such an essential tool for modern designers.

Together with Khara, you’ll tackle:

  • Navigating InDesign’s interface, panels, tools, and workspace with confidence

  • Setting up documents for print, digital, and social media projects

  • Placing, scaling, linking, and managing images, graphics, and logos

  • Using paragraph, character, and object styles to build consistent, editable designs

  • Creating flyers, tri-fold brochures, fillable PDF forms, magazine-style layouts, and social templates

  • Preparing files for professional output with bleeds, preflight, packaging, and export settings

  • Building reusable systems with parent pages, text variables, templates, and linked assets

This isn't just about learning what buttons to click; instead, you'll learn how to think and troubleshoot like an InDesign designer. Plus, if you’ve used Photoshop or Illustrator before, you’ll see how InDesign fits into the larger Adobe ecosystem and how it brings images, graphics, and text together into one organized layout system.

This class is perfect for designers who want to stop fighting with layout tools and start building clean, flexible, professional layouts and workflows. By the end, you’ll understand how to create polished documents from scratch, troubleshoot common issues, package files properly, and export with confidence. More importantly, you’ll discover that InDesign doesn’t have to feel rigid or overwhelming. With the right workflow and mindset, it can actually become one of the most creative and satisfying tools in your design toolkit.

So open up InDesign, roll up your sleeves, and let’s get started!

Sharing is who I am, and teaching is where I am at my best, because I've been on both sides of that equation, and getting to deliver useful training is my meaningful way to be a part of the creative community.

I've spent a long time watching others learn, and teach, to refine how I work with you to be efficient, useful and, most importantly, memorable. I want you to carry what I've shown you into a bright future.

I have a wife (a lovely Irish girl) and kids. I have lived and worked in many places (as Kiwis tend to do) – but most of my 14+ years of creating and teaching has had one overriding theme: bringing others along for the ride as we all try to change the world with our stories, our labours of love and our art.

I'm a certified Adobe instructor (ACI) in Ireland. I'm also an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) and have completed the Adobe Certified Associate training (ACA). And I don't just do Adobe. Remember, media is a very broad term – digital blew out the borders, so we are all constantly learning.

I've been teaching for 14+ years. I come from being a media designer and content creator – so I understand exactly where you're at now. I've been there. I love this stuff. Print, digital publishing, web and video. I can see how it all connects. And I can see how we can share those connections.

I've been using InDesign since before it was InDesign and I learned things I didn't know existed in this Application. Great instruction and great instructor. She touches on so many time saving and productive features for design and beyond! A great all around course for learning the In's and Out's of this Application.

Khara is not Dan. Khara is very knowledgable, engaging and easy to understand. I bought the course on the premise that Dan was teaching the course initially. Dan's methodology and way of teaching is what I am and was expecting. Regarding Khara, the course is still very well laid out and easy to understand. She provides a lot full of useful and practical steps and info. I appreciate that they updated the course of 2026. I initially bought knowing I bought a slightly outdated course. The fundaments were the same. As mentioned, I was expecting and expected you: Dan as a teacher. I do understand that updating all the old courses takes time. Your time is important. I also want to say thank you for not making a separate course and having us repurchase the course. This is and was very considerate. Would have I paid for an updated version of you teaching probably. Unfortunately, there is a bit of loss of trust. Would I recommend your other videos? I am not sure. If I recommend someone to buy your course and then the person gets someone else... that makes me look bad and unreliable. I appreciate you took a lot of time to evaluate a suitable teacher. I have watched and do watch Khara on other platforms; she is knowledgable, professional, and well versed in InDesign. The course I bought was under your name and was initially with you. Your style and methodology is what I what I paid for and expected. I don't want to spend hours on YouTube watching your old videos being interrupted with ads and such. The point is I am now reluctant to recommend others to buy your courses, as you may not be the teacher or the course teacher may suddenly change.

I am a 67 year old newbie to In Design. Thank you for making all this so simple to understand.

By Liza-Marie Chan on 4/30/2026

I found this course really easy to go through. I loved the "Homework" as it encouraged me to go back through the videos if I did not fully understand something. I liked Dans style of teaching. Everything was clear and easy to understand. Because of this, I'll be looking into attending more of his training courses. 5/5 from me!

By Ophelia Hammond on 4/30/2026

I'm glad I picked Dan's course among the many courses of InDesign out there. He's funny and makes the lessons easy to understand. However, he has the tendency to speak really fast, so I have to go back and pause to make sure I am able to follow. But overall, I enjoyed this course and learned a lot - coming from zero InDesign background. I'm now excited to try other designs using everything I learned from this course.

By Rick B on 4/19/2026

I just finished Dan Scott's InDesign Essentials course and I wish I'd done it before his Photoshop and Illustrator courses. It covers the basic Adobe ecosystem tools and workflow more thoroughly than the others, which actually makes it the perfect introduction to Adobe as a whole. The fundamentals are explained clearly and by the end you'll have a better handle on document layout than most people who've used Word for a decade. Dan's teaching style is as strong here as in his other courses. My only frustration was with my own workflow — I kept running into issues with primary text frames not flowing properly through columns and pages, which I'm hoping the Advanced course will help me sort out. That's a me and InDesign problem, not a Dan Scott problem. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a solid foundation in InDesign.

By Jo Rhodes on 4/12/2026

I enjoyed this course very much. Dan's delivery was clear and engaging. We say when some one is good at something they make it look easy, and he does. I did have trouble when trying to do the project because some times InDesign didn't do what Dan's InDesign did even though I slowed down and rewatched the videos. Consequently, I stopped doing the projects. I want to practice. I did reach out to Adobe and they helped, but left on my own I still struggled. Is there a cheat sheet to ask questions and problem solve so I can be successful? Also, can I get the short cuts from Udemy? Thank you for this amazing course!

By Malaina Hudson on 2/26/2026

So far the class is very informative and I really appreciate that several ways to do the same thing get shown pretty often. The instructor does go very quickly, though, and I often have to pause the video and back it up to see all of the keystrokes and menu selections that are being made.

By Wilco Splinter on 2/12/2026

It was very informative. Mr. Dan Scott was easy to follow both in terms of participating in his examples, as well as being able to return to previous videos in order to recall what exactly you needed to do. Overall, very handy, as well as accessible to those both new and more used to InDesign. I had a good time doing this cursus and very much do recommend it.

By Tamara Figueiredo on 12/18/2025

Nice, easy to follow! Explaining some concepts for print newbies (slug!!) is super helpful! Update: Still easy to follow, even though I do repeat some clips as I am working with the instructor. Neat stuff. I would have NO idea about half of the features in InDesign if not for this course. :)
