Our take

Based on the ratings of 48,365 students and a sample of their written reviews, the syllabus, the course as of May 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Dan Scott's beginner Figma course runs 9.5 hours across 95 lectures and takes one project from brief and persona through wireframes, colors, type, components and an interactive prototype, then out to developer handoff. It is written for people who have never opened Figma and may not be sure what UX means. Over 211,000 students have enrolled and it holds a 4.7 rating from about 48,000 reviews, with roughly 93 percent giving four or five stars. The syllabus shows it was last updated in May 2026 and includes a section on Figma Sites.

Reviewers keep coming back to two things: the pace and the humor. One says Scott's enthusiasm kept them going on days they didn't feel like learning, and another singles out the 19 homework assignments as the part that made the content stick. Experienced designers, including one who had built websites in Photoshop since 2006, say it finally got them working in Figma properly. Complaints are mild. One reviewer wished the instructor had every detail worked out in advance instead of muddling through Figma quirks on camera, and the course is essentials only, so components, variants and auto layout each get a short section rather than a deep one.

There are no quizzes, just the assignments, and the UX theory (personas, briefs, client expectations) is light compared with a dedicated UX fundamentals course. If you want the software plus enough process to ship a portfolio piece, this is the safest pick in the Figma list. Plan on the separate advanced course afterwards if you want more.

Best forComplete beginners, or Photoshop-era designers, who want to learn Figma by building one app design start to finish.
Skip it ifYou already use auto layout, components and variants daily and want advanced Figma or deep UX research methods.

Pros

  • One project from brief and persona to clickable prototype and developer handoff
  • 19 homework assignments that a reviewer says made the material stick
  • Last updated May 2026, with a section on Figma Sites
  • Experienced Figma users still report picking up shortcuts and tips they didn't know

Cons

  • Essentials only: components, variants and auto layout each get a short section
  • The instructor sometimes works through Figma quirks live rather than editing them out
  • No quizzes, and UX theory is light next to the Figma tooling
Dan is a fantastic tutor and his enthusiasm and humour convinces you to keep going even if you've had a bad day and can't be bothered to learn. That's a rare thing!

We’ll use this UI UX design tool to create beautiful User Interfaces and engaging prototypes. Most importantly... we'll cover the client expectations of you as a new UX designer.

This course is aimed at people new to design, new to User Experience design. Even if you’re not totally sure what UX really means, don’t worry. We’ll start right at the beginning and work our way through step by step.

  • First we’ll describe the brief & how to work with a UX persona.

  • Then you’ll learn how to create simple wireframes.

  • From there we’ll look at how to implement colours & images properly in your designs.

  • You’ll learn the do’s & don’ts around choosing fonts for web & mobile apps.

  • You’ll learn how to create your own icons, buttons & other UI components.

  • You’ll learn some pretty scary terms such as Components, Constraints & Multi Dimensional Variants. They are all really easy to understand once you know how.

Before the end of this course you will have made fully interactive prototypes

You will take a project all the way through - collaborating with other team members and exporting the right files ready to hand off to your developer or software engineer.

We’ll be focusing on the software Figma but I’ll make sure to explain the techniques & terms used in the UX and how real world projects are run. You will develop a great understanding of the industry and will be able to manage your own UX projects.

I will be setting assignments through the course which will help develop your skills and enable you to create something special and unique for your own portfolio.

Sharing is who I am, and teaching is where I am at my best, because I've been on both sides of that equation, and getting to deliver useful training is my meaningful way to be a part of the creative community.

I've spent a long time watching others learn, and teach, to refine how I work with you to be efficient, useful and, most importantly, memorable. I want you to carry what I've shown you into a bright future.

I have a wife (a lovely Irish girl) and kids. I have lived and worked in many places (as Kiwis tend to do) – but most of my 14+ years of creating and teaching has had one overriding theme: bringing others along for the ride as we all try to change the world with our stories, our labours of love and our art.

I'm a certified Adobe instructor (ACI) in Ireland. I'm also an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) and have completed the Adobe Certified Associate training (ACA). And I don't just do Adobe. Remember, media is a very broad term – digital blew out the borders, so we are all constantly learning.

I've been teaching for 14+ years. I come from being a media designer and content creator – so I understand exactly where you're at now. I've been there. I love this stuff. Print, digital publishing, web and video. I can see how it all connects. And I can see how we can share those connections.

I finished the course today and after this wonderful journey I would say that Dan did a very good job. It has been a beautiful journey with him and I will surely complete the advanced course with him. Everything about figma essentials was covered in the course in the most enjoyable way and also he is a really funny guy BTW :D Thank you Dan and see you in the advanced course.

By GrainFox Professional Development on 8/17/2026

Really great introduction to the concepts. Personal preference, but I tend to like tutorials where I feel like the teacher has every detail fully worked out in advance, as opposed to muddling through weird quirks alongside us and just going with it. But those moments were minimal.

Fantastic course. As an experienced Graphic Designer I finally wanted to add UX Design to my Portfolio and therefore learn Figma. Dan has a great way of explaining and the pace of the tutorials were perfect for me. I finished the course with a nice AND functional design. Really enjoyed it, learned a lot. Probably doing the advanced course as well. Can recommend!

This course was excellent! Dan does a great job of providing a lot of background info on many overlapping topics (design, development, AI tools, etc.), while staying focused on UI UX Design in Figma. I found the homework assignments really valuable in ensuring I followed all the content and retained all the info. Don't skip those! It's a lot of info, but then again, Figma has a lot of features. Dan makes it fun and approachable. Thank you!

Thanks so much, this was really helpful! I did a few courses through the Figma Learning site but this was much more in-depth and useful. I feel much more confident in using Figma now and am looking forward to starting the Advanced course next. I'll definitely check-out more courses with Dan/Bring Your Own Laptop as this one was personable and easy to follow along. Thanks Dan!

Overall a very good course covering the fundamentals. There were some technical issues a that took a while to resolve (hence 4/5), but now everything has been fixed. Daniel Walter Scott is a fun, quirky teacher. I can recommend.

Honestly Dan, what you did was awesome, I enjoyed your teachings, although I ran into the same issues with the videos it all still turned out okay. You made it easy to follow, and what i liked the most was the way u showed us more than one way to do this, I believe in flexibility and versatility so it was good. Dope stuff, I loved the course.

By Silviu Balan on 6/2/2026

The course was great. Very knowledgeable instructor, also very charming(those glasses really give him a lot of style points :) ). My small feedback for Dan is to split the longer videos into more parts, I just find them more digestable and can significantly improve you learning time(I know it's extra work for you guys but still try to do it). Overall this course was awesome. Thanks Dan. :)

By Anna Rudak on 5/31/2026

I think the course could be a little bit more advanced - I'd like some more tasks to complete, so I could feel more confident with Figma. Other than that it was a great experience and a good way to start the journey with Figma as a beginner. Thanks.

By Āditya Sarma on 3/29/2026

His way of teaching with the perfect sequences and order will make you stay focused even if you don't want to. The best part are the constant class projects in every section, that way you really get the grasp of what he's trying to make you learn. Ooh and also his occasional humor in between the lectures make you feel you're inside a classroom haha. Overall, a great course! Definitely recommend to all the beginners out there who wanna learn Figma as a part of their UX UI career! Cheers :)
