Course Description
Do you need to make a layout for a nonfiction book for professional publication? Perhaps you are a guide book author and want to learn how the book layout process works so you can make your own PDF. This course is for you! Most other Indesign courses teach lots of extra material that won't help you. This course is specifically targeted at people who want to learn nonfiction and textbook layout without all the fluff.
Walter: "Your course was so helpful. My staff struggled for a month trying to learn Indesign from YouTube. We just wasted our time and missed critical opportunities. Your easy-to-follow teaching style literally hand-held us, taught my team time-saving skills, and saved us $1,000's of dollars in lost revenue. Thank you!" Walter P., Orange and Blue Marketing
From Aaron: "Hi there, my name is Aaron and I've professionally taught Indesign to hundreds of students. I've created hundreds of layouts in Indesign, from simple nonfiction books to complex guides and textbooks. Together we'll work through real projects will real manuscripts. You'll learn everything you need to know to be successful. This course is filled with instruction that gets you to success fast."
This course will save you from wasting $100's if not $1,000's of your hard-earned money. Many "pro" book layout designers learn from YouTube as they go, wasting your money. Other Indesign contractors charge insane amounts of money. That's why I made this course. It's for people who want to learn nonfiction book layout or need to do the job themselves.
Bethany: "What you just taught me almost made me cry. Before your class, my boss made me change the font in our company book twice. It took me a week. With what you showed me, I could've been literally done in a minute. One week cut down to one minute. I hope others find your course." Bethany R., Outdoor Medical Training School
This course helps you avoid these mistakes:
Incorrectly layering images
Improperly typesetting pages
Classic manuscript import errors
Incorrectly setting colors
Making a hard-to-manage table of contents
It's so easy to make mistakes and not see them during book layout. Aaron has seen books with beautiful covers but the inside looked like a mess. Trying to do a book layout in Microsoft Word will make your book look terrible. Word just doesn't have the right tools.
This course includes:
Sample complete manuscripts for practice
Sample copyright page text completely free to use
Ideas for graphic objects and integration with Illustrator
Aaron shares the tricks he's learned over years of doing nonfiction book layout design. The goal of this course is to teach you how to make your own book PDF and not look like an amateur doing it. You'll learn the necessary skills to make turn your manuscript into a pro PDF.
Manuscript software formatting guidelines include:
Microsoft Word
Google Docs
OpenOffice
Even if you used a different program, the instructions for the above software will help you figure out what you need to do. Ask questions in the course forum and Aaron will do his best to help you out.
There are a lot of small but important details in a nonfiction book layout. Avoid making errors with this course. You spent 100's of hours perfecting your manuscript. Don't make the rookie mistake of making your book look like it was prepared by an amateur.
Who this course is for:
Anyone wanting to create a professional PDF from their nonfiction manuscript
Aaron's course is for people with no InDesign experience. No previous publishing knowledge is required.
This course is relaxed and bite-sized. It's broken down into small skills that won't overwhelm you. You only need basic computer skills to succeed.

This course is a must for anyone serious about nonfiction book design. The instructor is exceptionally clear and concise, every lesson gets straight to the point without sacrificing depth. Complex topics like typography, file management, and layout are broken down in a way that’s easy to follow, even for beginners. I walked away with practical skills I could apply immediately in InDesign. Highly recommended!

I have taken other InDesign classes online and was really ready to give up on this option because so much was left out. There was this assumption that I knew all this other information. And I didn't. This course and the fiction course I took from Aaron gave me the in-depth training I needed - from A to Z with no presumption of my having any working knowledge. The instruction was concise, clear, and just enough repetition to ensure I had mastered the content. I am so grateful for the assistance.

I loved this course. Aaron Linsdau broke down the settings and features into small videos which allowed me to digest the material easily. The video format allowed me to pause, rewind, fast forward, and resume at my convenience. It also further enhanced my understanding. Sometimes, the videos lag when they are either maximized or minimized or when you return to the videos. Thus, following along with Aaron can be challenging. Nevertheless, I love how concisely and clearly Aaron explains InDesign. In fact, I wished he taught other technology classes using this short video style.

Mr. Linsdau present a clear and comprehensive explanation of InDesign without overwhelming me with details. He begins with the basic of document creation and set up, followed by styles, fonts, pictures and objects, graphics, integrating with other files, and more. In places, he adds videos to dive deeper into a topic in order to teach specialized elements of the software. I realy appreciate that he added downloadable file to use as a checklist for finalizing a book. I took copious notes. It would be helpful to provide an outline or notes for the course. Thank you for wonderful class!

I found this course to be excellent and informative, providing valuable insights into book compilation techniques. However, I would like to recommend the development of a more advanced course focused on complex book designs, particularly for textbooks. Such textbooks often feature diverse sections and subsections within chapters, as well as a wide range of visual elements.

This is by far the best InDesign course I have tried or purchased based on the fit with what I need. I especially like the pace, lack of chit-chat, ease of following, and generally calm, organized, methodical style. I think I will finally be able to fulfill a long-time desire to use InDesign for the dozens of books and series I plan to develop and re-develop over the next several years. I'll also be able to easily collaborate with design professionals when I need to.

Clear and to the point. Very well organized, and the instructor has a calm and easygoing demeanor that makes following along enjoyable. Best of all, he provides a number of pro tips that would be easy to miss if you were trying to pick this up here and there from random online videos.
By Glen Barnhardt on 11/30/2022
This course has been excellent and explains very clearly, not only what to set, but also what you might encounter, and how to get your desired result. I like that many editors that are used to write the initial book are included and the pre-placement of your text in InDesign to avoid gotchas. The author offers many options and let's you know when it could be a setting that is an individual option as to like or dis-like.
By Kathryn Phillips on 6/29/2021
The instructor is very clear. This is more of a course to show you how to use InDesign, rather than teaching principles of book design, although the instructor does drop some design tips along the way. I like that each item is its own 2-5 minute video. It will be very easy to go back to reference them if I need to, rather than trying to remember where the little bit of information I need is inside of an hour long video like some other courses.
By Aidina Bryant on 2/14/2021
Excellent and clear course. The lessons are broken into helpful little bite-sized objectives. This makes it easier to go back and review a specific topic. It's far better than those really long master classes with 1/2 hour lessons. Those weren't helpful at all because it was frustrating to refer back to. This is far better.
