Course Description

Do you need to make a layout for a fiction book for professional publication? Perhaps you are an author and want to learn how the book layout process works so you can make your own PDF. This course is for you! Most other Indesign courses teach lots of extra material that won't help you. This course is specifically targeted at people who want to learn fiction and textbook layout without all the fluff.

  • Walter: "Your course was so helpful. My staff struggled for a month trying to learn Indesign from YouTube. We just wasted our time and missed critical opportunities. Your easy-to-follow teaching style literally hand-held us, taught my team time-saving skills, and saved us $1,000's of dollars in lost revenue. Thank you!" Walter P., Orange and Blue Marketing

From Aaron: "Hi there, my name is Aaron and I've professionally taught Indesign to hundreds of students. I've created hundreds of layouts in Indesign, from simple fiction books to complex guides and textbooks. Together we'll work through real projects will real manuscripts. You'll learn everything you need to know to be successful. This course is filled with instruction that gets you to success fast."

This course will save you from wasting $100's if not $1,000's of your hard-earned money. Many "pro" book layout designers learn from YouTube as they go, wasting your money. Other Indesign contractors charge insane amounts of money. That's why I made this course. It's for people who want to learn fiction book layout or need to do the job themselves.

  • Bethany: "What you just taught me almost made me cry. Before your class, my boss made me change the font in our company book twice. It took me a week. With what you showed me, I could've been literally done in a minute. One week cut down to one minute. I hope others find your course." Bethany R., Outdoor Medical Training School

This course helps you avoid these mistakes:

  • Creating text that's incorrectly spaced out and looks weird

  • Justified text that still looks jagged - pro tips

  • Overload of hyphen breaks

  • Orphans and widows - random text starting a page

  • Wrong hyphens - you probably used the wrong hyphens

It's so easy to make mistakes and not see them during book layout. Aaron has seen books with beautiful covers but the inside looked like a hack job. Trying to do book layout in Microsoft Word will make your book look terrible. Word just doesn't have the right tools.

This course includes:

  • Sample complete manuscripts for practice

  • Sample copyright page text completely free to use

  • Sample word processing program files for challenge assignments

Aaron shares the tricks he's learned over years of doing fiction book layout design. The goal of this course is to teach you how to make your own book PDF and not look like an amateur doing it. You'll learn the necessary skills to make turn your manuscript into a pro PDF.

Manuscript software formatting guidelines include:

  • Microsoft Word

  • Google Docs

  • OpenOffice

  • Scrivener

  • Apple Pages

Even if you used a different program, the instructions for the above software will help you figure out what you need to do. Ask questions in the course forum and Aaron will do his best to help you out.

There are a lot of small but important details in fiction book layout. Avoid making errors with this course. You spent 100's of hours perfecting your manuscript. Don't make the rookie mistake of making your book look like it was prepared by a fifth-grader.

Who this course is for:

  • Anyone wanting to create a professional PDF from their fiction manuscript

  • Aaron's course is for people with no InDesign experience. No previous publishing knowledge required.

  • This course is relaxed and bite-sized. It's broken down into small skills that won't overwhelm you. You only need basic computer skills to succeed.

Perfect for what I need to learn. I am saving myself so much time by doing this course. It is easy to get lost in In Design, and formatting a book is different than doing the graphics work I have done before in in design. A great refresher and so helpful for all the rules with Book formatting.

Now 2026. Unfortunately, the Help option takes you to the internet and Adobe help forum, so I cannot search menus internally. But otherwise, I have managed okay to get everything set up :) Very useful tips. There was a moment when I struggled to find the Left Justified icon (due to working off a smaller screen) - I hunted through all the top menus to find it. I was not able to. I then realised the instructor should have asked anyone who couldn't see the Left Justified icon on their screen, could have gone to the right panel and selected Paragraph to bring up the options box for Left Justified. Overall, I have found this course to be really useful.

Learning what I wanted to. This course may be best suited for larger screens. I wasn't able to see everything on my iPad. I am now using my laptop and a monitor. One with the course and the other with Adobe InDesign. This is the way to go! The course is great, though. It is well paced and easy to follow.

If you are looking for an extremely basic, simple, and straightforward approach to using InDesign to do your own simple book layout, this class might be for you, particularly if you've never used the software before. (Though, if that is the case, I would suggest another app might serve you better.) I expected significantly more information when I purchased a "complete guide" to fiction book layout. This entire course was, at best, a rudimentary beginner's guide to book layout. No mention was made about making or saving templates, using text variables, or any intermediate or advanced applications for character or paragraph styles. The times when I would have appreciated an experienced professional's advice, for example, with copyright, fonts, and industry standards, most often the "advice" was to do your own research, which defeats the entire purpose for me. All said and done, I watched the course at 2x speed and learned nothing I haven't already figured out from playing with the app and watching free YouTube videos.

Je recommande ce cours qui est juste exceptionnel. J'ai appris énormément. Le formateur est au top, il explique très bien et donne des astuces pour faciliter l'apprentissage et l'utilisation de Indesign. Tout les cours d'Aaron sont très bons en général.

I was a professional graphic designer. Although I did not book layout. After years away from designing, this course was a perfect refresher course as well as providing new and using information of book layout. Aaron is very thorough in his step by step approach. I would highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn book layout. Of course you do need to know how to use Indesign to take advantage of the instruction. Thanks Aaron!

I took this course because I was so disappointed with what I could do in Atticus and wanted to be able to format my book exactly how I wanted it. I was so intimidated by Indesign, but this course made it possible for me to feel like I could format my own book and do a damn good job.

So far so good. I see it is from 2019. If our brilliant software creators would sit on their hands for a year or two, we might get some mastery. My point, under help, I don't see a search function and Help sends me out to Learn and Support Land. The program could already do more than is humanly possible in 2019. Slow the heck-fire down. We can't compete with AI, might as well enjoy our lives. Anyway...the teacher is great.

The class was quite instructive. It helped me understand the Indesign workflow, something I couldn't find on Youtube. I sped up some of the videos because I didn't care about Scrivener and such, but it's good to know how to handle that software for future reference.
