Course Description
Since the launch of the Apple App Store in 2008, games have been one of the most downloaded categories of apps for iOS devices, the same holds true for the Android App Stores. Most people seem to think games are very hard to build because they require a lot of difficult to learn programming knowledge. But in this class I will teach you how easy it is to make your own games with NO programming knowledge at all.
No prior programming or game development experience is needed for this class. In this class you will learn how to use Gamesalad Creator to create three different video games. You'll learn:
- How to set up and use Gamesalad's development environment
- How to think like a game developer
- About key game elements like sprites, behaviors, audio, and more
- How to set up different kinds of player interaction, keyboard for desktop games and touch controls for mobile games
- How to add physics to your games
- How to publish your games as HTML 5 and post it on your own webpage
The three games that you will have completed by the end of class are:
- Classic Pong
- An Endless Runner
- And a Physics Puzzle game
All three games can be previewed for FREE from the lecture outline below!
Learn Gamesalad Book! I have recently published a book titled "Learn Mobile Game Development in One Day Using Gamesalad". While it is NOT required to complete this class it is a great companion to learn more details about Gamesalad and also contains four entirely different game building exercises. Udemy does not allow live links in this area so if you are interested in the book, simple do a Google search and it should pop right up for you.
Some features of Gamesalad Creator include:
Gamesalad offers a FREE 15 day free trial of their software which should be plenty of time to work through the lessons in this class. After the 15 day free trial you are able to continue using Gamesalad on a monthly or yearly basis through various subscription plans.
- IOS and Android Publishing
- Web Publishing with HTML 5
- Publish to Macintosh and Windows computers
- Publish to both the Kindle and the Nook
- Built in Physics engine
- Simple Drag & Drop user interface
Sign up now and you'll have all the knowledge you need to create and publish your own video games in no time!
Note: Gamesalad has versions that work on both the Macintosh and Windows operating systems. This course uses the Macintosh version for all of the lessons, while all of the functionality is the same between operating systems, the interface is different so Windows users will see different window and menu layouts in their software. If you are a Windows user consider watching the free preview of Lecture 3 where I discuss the differences between the Windows and Macintosh versions.
If you are a Windows user please be sure and watch and read the Windows lectures in Section 8 Bonus Material first!

This is a clear step by step, comprehensive and enjoyable course! It takes you from being completely new to Gamesalad to creating 3 fully functional games, learning techniques that can be applied later to build games from your own invention. Also, you don't need any programming experience, as Gamesalad doesn't require you to code, but to think logically. Thank you Jamie for your time and expertise. What could have taken months to learn, i absorbed in a few hours! AAA+ course!

This was a really awesome introduction to GameSalad. I really appreciate Jamie taking the time to create this course and I look forward to the next level. In the meantime, the foundation is great for me to explore and try new things to combine it with my animation, illustration, graphic design, and ux background.

The course serves exactly what it says. The quality of the presenter (most importantly, his English diction) is great and makes it very easy to follow to examples given. Only minor gotcha are the few game examples shown (only 3 of them) considering all that can be done with GameSalad. However, as said, this is an introduction course and as such deserves 5 starts. Recommended.

This is THE course to learn GameSalad. Jamie knows how to pace the lessons so we can follow them, and his instructions are very clear. Love how there's "mistakes" as he goes, and he goes back to correct them. Logic is almost as important as knowing how to do something in game development, and that's what he presents and encourages us to think it through. I loved the pacing of this tutorial -- the pacing is fast, and if you're comfortable with picking up new computer programs, it's easy to learn as you go. You can always stop the video to catch up or replay a section and pick it up again. Can't wait to make my own games using the template games he constructs!

What makes this course so great is that Jamie takes time to explain 'why' he's doing each step in the videos, nothing is glossed over or left unclear. And the comments sections from other students are helpful to read through as well. Furthermore, Jamie also has handful of other videos on his site that explore more intermediate / advanced topics, which is a great lead off before going off to make your own games. Again, thank you Jamie and I whole heartedly recommend this course to anyone looking to learn the basics of GS in a comprehensive, step-by-step approach.

For me, it's like an old old dream that cames true! Making video games... Jamie is really a great instructor and basic features of GameSalad are very well explained thru the making of three games, each game built on the features of previous tutorial. Also, I asked a couple of questions during this course and Jamie answered all of them. Following Jamie all course long, I built the games on my GameSalad installation and it was really educative. Now hoping to see an intermediate course to learn more advanced features of GameSalad!

Thanks for making this course! It's been a huge help! The videos are step by step and Jamie does a great job explaining everything. And it's a video so you can always pause and go back. I've been struggling looking up various youTube tutorials and trying to make sense of everything when I first started using GameSalad. This course provided the foundation I wanted to now go off and tinker in GameSalad even more. I can't wait for the intermediate course!

I learned a lot from the course. At the end of the course (the course walks you through the creation of 3 fun games) I felt confident that I could write games on my own. The course says introduction to ... but it is truly a comprehensive introductory course. The instructor does a great job explaining the Object Oriented aspects of the Game Salad platform in layman's terms and the graphics you get to use in the course look very cool. I also learned hints and insights on how to put the graphics together.
