Our take

Based on the ratings of 8,264 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

Gary Simon's free Angular starter runs 80 minutes across 11 lectures in four sections: getting started with the CLI, templates, styling, and a final block called Going Further. The course promises services, animations and a deploy along the way. It assumes HTML, CSS and some JavaScript but no Angular at all, and that is the whole pitch. This is not a course anyone finishes and then builds an app with. It is a first look, meant to get a project running and the ideas of components and data binding in place before paying for something longer.

With 8,264 reviews averaging 4.5 stars, most students got what they came for. Reviewers say the instructor's examples are simple and well organized, and they like seeing code and browser side by side. The complaints are consistent, though. The one and two star reviews call it too basic and unfinished, with forms never covered and no exercises or mini project. One reviewer got stuck because the animation examples relied on an old build of Angular 4, and another could not get the quickstart install working at all. Nothing has been updated since April 2017, so expect some commands and syntax to differ from current Angular.

Free is hard to argue with, and reviewers mostly grade it on that basis. On our Angular page it sits next to the Complete Guide and the Complete Angular Course, and one reviewer describes this one as preparation for a deeper course you would pay for. Treat it as a test drive. Spend an evening here, decide whether Angular clicks, then move to something longer for forms and a real project. Anyone with a project deadline should skip straight to the longer course, since one reviewer came for a quick fix and left feeling they had not even learned the basics.

Best forPeople who have never opened Angular and want a free, one evening taste before buying a full course.
Skip it ifYou need forms, exercises or a finished project, or lessons that match the current Angular CLI and syntax.

Pros

  • Free and only 80 minutes long, so there is nothing to lose by trying it
  • Reviewers praise the simple, organized examples with code and browser shown side by side
  • Covers the CLI install, components, data binding, services and a deploy in one sitting
  • 4.5 stars from over 8,000 reviews, with about 82 percent giving four or five stars

Cons

  • Last updated April 2017, and one reviewer found the animation examples broke on a newer Angular
  • Very basic and stops short: no forms, no exercises, no mini project
  • Assumes VS Code and a working setup; one student got stuck at the quickstart install
The instructors best features were very organized, easy to follow examples. The side by side of code and browser worked great.

Fine for a beginner with HTML, CSS and basic JavaScript; true coding newcomers will find it assumes a lot.

The course may not updated to latest Angular version, but heh, its free and it would not change much anyway as this is a course to get your hands on by helping you to build the first ecosystem setup, and to learn the basic concepts of Angular. It prepares you for second pass through the notions with a more deep course that you would pay. It was worth the time. Thank you it helped me !

The instructors best features were very organized, easy to follow examples. The side by side of code and browser worked great. The fact that he kept the samples simple, instead of showing off, was fantastic. Often, it is so easy to get lost in what object of reference is coming from where. He took the time to prevent that.

its a short course but very understandable. but some little points should be more describable, like in animation part there are still so many things to know and of course your course was that much interested for what i am now more interested to learn about angular. thanks for this course :).

It's fun and good course, although, maybe I couldn't used it real soon in real project. It's worth by to see and learn from this course. It's basic and as newbie in Angular4, I really said thanks to instructor. :) Anyway, hope there's some kind of translation feature, sometimes I miss-heard or didn't catch-up what instructor was said. Thanks. W.

Gary Simon does not need any introduction! He is a very famous top-tier tutor and development expert! He really knows how to deliver content and one would be at a loss if they do not follow his courses! I purchased a number of courses from him and he really deserves it! Please do the same!

Overall, a must see tutorial which includes the much needed fundamentals of application development using angular. The instructor(Gary) has done a tremendous job in putting things together and projecting in an understanding and comprehensive approach. Being myself an Angular v1 developer for 3 years, this tutorial has helped me to learn (at least getting started with) angular4 easily.

First of all thank you so much. Keep do more..., And this is really awesome experience.. am really beginner for this still i learnt all what you thought... My opinion is give at least one example project before explaining other related concepts.

Hello, teacher Gary. Thank you so much for creating this course. It is really important for people who are starting from the scratch. Angular can be very scary, but with this FREE training, people should not be afraid anymore. It's clear in your course, that you present the purpose of Angular and how it works, but in a very superficial way. And what I like is that is CLEAR, it's clear for people that the course is superficial. So it really meets the expectation. Another thing I like is that you are honest with people. You don't promise in your course they will learn everything and will be able to do everything they want, and also that you will help them. You just say: if you get lost, go to google. That's amazing, because it makes clear that the person should rely on their own initiatives to grow, and not on this class ONLY.

Great introductory course that provides a quite comprehensive overview of Angular 4 without requiring any experience with the previous releases of the framework. It requires some basic knowledge of HTML5/JavaScript/CSS but it really helps to grasp some useful insights without reading the whole Angular documentation. And you get all this for free ;)
