Learn Unity Shaders from Scratch (Udemy.com)

A complete guide to Unity ShaderLab, URP Shaders, Shader Graph and the HLSL Shading Language using Unity 6

Created by: Nicholas Lever

Last updated May 2025

Our take

Based on the ratings of 566 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.

Nicholas Lever's course is a 5.9 hour tour of Unity shader code. It starts with flat 2D fragment shaders and shaping functions, then moves through noise, textures, vertex and surface shaders, transparency, volumetrics and post processing. URP and Shader Graph sections follow before a short conclusion, and the course was refreshed in May 2025 for Unity 6. Despite "from scratch" in the title, the reviews suggest it suits Unity users who already know the editor and are not afraid of math.

Praise first. Reviewers like the clear, no-fuss delivery, the step by step build up, and the shared project with starting and finished scenes, which lets you compare your code when something breaks. One reviewer says it finally made shader formulas and matrix transforms readable. The complaints are consistent too. Code is often typed or read aloud without saying why, coordinate spaces get skipped over, the shaders have few comments, and the coding sections move fast. Two reviewers wanted more on URP and Shader Graph.

Of about 566 ratings, 360 are five stars and only 21 are one or two, so most people come away happy. The unhappy ones are mostly beginners who expected hand holding. At under six hours it is a quick way into shader code, but plan to pause, rewind and look up math on the side. Recommended for developers with some programming behind them. If Shader Graph is what you need first, look elsewhere.

Best forUnity developers who can code a little and want to read and write HLSL, not just wire up nodes.
Skip it ifYou want a gentle start, or deep coverage of Shader Graph or URP. Shader Graph gets five lectures, URP eight.

Pros

  • Clear, direct delivery with little wasted time, per reviewers who found the pacing easy
  • Shared project has starting and finished scenes, so you can compare your code when it breaks
  • Builds gradually from 2D fragment shaders to surface shaders, transparency and post processing
  • Updated in May 2025 for Unity 6, with a URP section and a Shader Graph section

Cons

  • Math-heavy, and basic graphics and math concepts like coordinate spaces are glossed over
  • Code is often typed or read aloud quickly without explaining why, and has few comments
  • Shader Graph gets only five short lectures, and URP coverage is thinner than some wanted
This is not an easy course. The math can be intimidating and requires the effort to work through. I guess this is what shader programming entails.

Listed for all levels, but reviews say it suits Unity users with some coding and comfort with math, not true beginners.

Course Description

For the last 5 years I have been working with the team at Unity to create learning resources for them including e-books. Using this insider knowledge I bring you the best Unity Shader course you can find. All updated for Unity 6. Including URP shaders and Shader Graph.

With Unity 6 the Universal Render Pipeline (URP) is now the default pipeline. This course shows you how to create shaders for URP either using code or if you are not a coder using Shader Graph. Putting you right at the cutting edge.

In this course we're going to look at using HLSL shading language to create amazing shaders.

Maybe you are

  • a developer struggling to bring to life a particular game feature because it needs a custom shader.

  • a developer who always wanted to create custom shaders but was too scared to start.

  • a developer wanting to add some custom post-processing effects to your 3d renders.

  • an artist wanting to create shaders without learning to code.

HLSL code syntax is based on the C language, but fear not, we will assume you have literally no knowledge of this language at all and we will, as the course title states, learn this from scratch. A shader uses the GPU ( the Graphics Processing Unit) to handle multiple programs at the same time, so it is unbelievably fast.

We will start from really simple examples and progress slowly through each stage of developing a custom shader. You will be able to play with the shader code using Visual Studio, or another code editor if you prefer. You can experiment with different values to see the impact it has on the end result.

Unity shaders are split into vertex shaders and fragment shaders and we will focus initially on the fragment shader, working essentially in a 2d environment. With dozens of shaders in the course resources you will learn the language in gentle stages. Before moving on to use Unity's surface shader syntax to easily include complex lighting.

Once you're comfortable with simple shaders we will cover advanced effects such as tessellation, transparency, using the stencil buffer and post-processing.

Creating your own shaders means understanding the HLSL language and that is the aim of the course. You could search for a suitable shader on ShaderToy or ShaderFrog and then try to adapt the code. But without knowing the language you're going to find that difficult to do. To really be effective you need to know about the  language, shaping functions, tiling and lighting calculations. To do this you will need to follow along with the course and complete the many challenges suggested. At the end you will then be able to create any shader that you can imagine.

Instructor Details

Nicholas Lever

After getting a degree in Graphic Design, I started work in 1980 as a cartoon animator. Buying a Sinclair ZX81 back in 1982 was the start of a migration to a full time programmer. The ZX81 was quickly swapped for the Sinclair Spectrum, a Z80 processor and a massive 48K of ram made this a much better computer to develop games. I developed a few games using Sinclair Basic and then Assembler. The Spectrum was swapped for a Commodore Amiga and I developed more games in the shareware market, moving to using C. At this stage it was essentially a hobby. Paid work was still animated commercials.

I finally bought a PC in the early nineties and completed an Open University degree in Maths and Computing. I created a sprite library ActiveX control and authored my first book, aimed at getting designers into programming. In the mid nineties along came Flash and the company I was now running, Catalyst Pictures, became known for creating games.

Since then the majority of my working life has been creating games, first in Flash and Director, as Director published the first widely available 3D library that would run in a browser using a plugin.

I'm really enjoying the course. The steps are well explained and are also supported by well-designed slides. Another great help is the shared project. It's well-structured and allows you to compare the code you've written during the lessons, helping you understand where you've gone wrong. If I had to offer a small constructive criticism, it would be about the comments in the shaders. The lack of comments slows down the hands-on learning process.

By Darcy Platz on 1/17/2025

The lectures need to have pauses added to them at the end of writing code in VS Code so that a person has time to pause the video and write the code themselves. For me I like to watch what is being instructed then pause and write the code so I have something to play around with once the lecture is done which helps me fully grasp what is going on. Also there is sometimes something fixed without explanation and a line of code can just pop into the script from what I'm assuming is a video clip edit. Other course creators usually edit in a vocal comment that they had to make a correction. I think that would really help improve these lectures. Small fixes could make this a way better course.

Learning a lot that I missed when trying to learn shaders on my own watching random videos and reading articles. While some of it is math heavy, that is exactly what I needed to get more comfortable with. I find it much easier to understand formulae in other's shader code now. Matrix transforms are always something I misunderstood and this help me clear that up as well. Some areas, such as the Textures and Shapes sections felt a bit rushed and focused more on effects and showcases than building practical skill foundation. You will have to slow yourself down and play with some of the code to practice. I found myself adding a lot of enhancements along the way to get the topics to really sink in. Push yourself to practice and don't skip the challenges (and challenge yourself) and I'd expect you'll learn a lot like I did. Nicholas is very responsive and helpful in answering questions.

This has been an amazing course so far, I would like to note anyone that wants to be learning shaders from scratch yes you will need to learn for a better understanding, the reality is you dont actually need to learn it but it helps so much in understanding both the reality and potenial of shader coding, I love the way this instructor tackles the subjects. If you come into this thinking you can just watched the video and then be on your way that is the wrong way to apporch this, instead this is best for coming back to and realizing information, this course may at times feel like a lost mess, but in reality this person does a great job at walking people through the basic and fundmental understandings of shaders. I could care less about the whole visual nobe base coding the real meat and prize is in the programming, I at first came at this course lost and never understanding anything new to computers new to coding because I have never coded in my life and now 8 months later I find myself realzing so much

As an introductory course it is great. I had some experience with writing GLSL shaders and i have been working with unity for couple of years. For some reason the step from where i was to creating shaders in unity was not easy and this course helped a lot. I hoped some advanced topics like deffered rendering would be touched upon but as the course name states, it is an introductory course. The sections on URP and shader graph were excelent and actualy convinced me to upgrade my current project to URP.

Shaders can contain some complex mathematics and I really appreciate Nik's diagrams to illustrate what is going on in a specific formula. In the 'shaping functions' part of the course, each example was tweakable and I did some really creative things with some of them on my own. In the 'noise' section I felt like a door had opened and each point that was made was important. This is not the easiest material but if you follow closely and think about the math, you will take in powerful techniques in graphics programming!

By Luke Liu on 1/19/2023

I like the instructor provides several simplified shader codes, and we can try/test shader functions while we are progressing through the course. The course is really great shader introductory course. However, this course is definitely not for all skill levels. The course is quite heavily using Math. I do recommend to have fairly good understanding on Trigonometry (Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Dot product), and Linear Algebra (change of coordinate basis). Otherwise it'll be hard time following the course along.

By Marek Bobáň on 10/24/2022

I like it overall. It's great because it covers a lot of things regarding shaders. It's very apparent that the lector knows his things. One thing that really bothers me during this course is that many individual topics are covered in a very fast pace. What I mean is that unless you are a very fast typer, you will struggle keeping up with the lector and you will have to pause the video several times, even in a two minute video. Some lectures feel like we just type some magic numbers and Voila! here is the solution, and you have no idea why those numbers and what was the process of getting them. Even with those issues, it's still a great course nontheless.

By Stephen on 5/4/2021

The information presented in this course is fantastic. The tutor has a great personality, and I can’t stress enough how enjoyable he makes this course. My main criticism is that the pacing is a bit all over the place. For hours it feels like we are getting fed bits of information at a nice pace, and then out of nowhere it suddenly becomes very overwhelming and we are presented with an onslaught of new information with very little time for explanation despite fantastic explanations early on. I would encourage everyone to purchase content from this tutor as he is truly fantastic, but this course has a very steep learning curve. Edit: After taking a few months to delve further into shaders, I revisited this course, and found it a lot more understandable, so I am editing my review as I feel that Nick did indeed do a good job, and that it was my own lack of foundational knowledge that made it feel like there was a bit of an information overload a few lectures in.
