Course Description

HTML5 Games run on just about all devices. Learn how to create them from someone who has spent the last 20 years creating casual games. All HTML5 games are based around a knowledge of displaying content on a Canvas using JavaScript. We use the latest JavaScript version, ES6, so as well as learning game development you will also learn the latest JavaScript syntax. In this course we start with the basics of individual images on a Canvas. From there we move onto sprites - developing step by step a sprite library that you are free to use in your own games. The library allows you to display frame animated sprites that show a flip book of images to display walking and running characters and much more.

You will learn:

  • About physics to easily add dynamic collision detection to your games.

  • How to create platform games, puzzle and card games.

  • How to add multiple layers of audio.

  • How to add a preloader to your games.

  • How to add the bells and whistles that make your game stand out.

  • How to handle multiple users via WebSockets.

All code is free to use in your own games. The course contains lots of assets and code examples that you are free to use in your own games. As a course student you also have access to an online tool for creating spritesheets and animations.

Having completed this course you will be ready to develop any 2d game. Only a basic knowledge of HTML and Javascript are assumed, all ideas are explained with examples you can try and resources you can use in your own games.

Take a look at the trailer to see the kind of content that you will be building once you've studied the course. HTML5 Game Development is great fun to learn and the skills you learn in this course will greatly improve your JavaScript skills which will be useful in your Web Development career.

Student reviews

  • “Great Course!!! I am learning so much. Nicholas is very good at presenting a concept explaining it and then implementing it into code all the while, allowing me the student to code along addressing any nuances that may be there. He is also very responsive to any questions. I know that enrolling into this course was a great decision and I already have the confidence to begin planning and developing my first game”

After getting a degree in Graphic Design, I started work in 1980 as a cartoon animator. Buying a Sinclair ZX81 back in 1982 was the start of a migration to a full time programmer. The ZX81 was quickly swapped for the Sinclair Spectrum, a Z80 processor and a massive 48K of ram made this a much better computer to develop games. I developed a few games using Sinclair Basic and then Assembler. The Spectrum was swapped for a Commodore Amiga and I developed more games in the shareware market, moving to using C. At this stage it was essentially a hobby. Paid work was still animated commercials.

I finally bought a PC in the early nineties and completed an Open University degree in Maths and Computing. I created a sprite library ActiveX control and authored my first book, aimed at getting designers into programming. In the mid nineties along came Flash and the company I was now running, Catalyst Pictures, became known for creating games.

Since then the majority of my working life has been creating games, first in Flash and Director, as Director published the first widely available 3D library that would run in a browser using a plugin.

I am currently taking a gaming class in college and this course so far has been able to help me understand what the professor was doing as they expected you to know just a proper setup which I didn't, and this course brought me up to speed very quickly by just doing the initial setup.

Nicks great, I wish there were more highly expert and niche instructors out there, I own like 2-3 of his other courses too. I appreciate his communication style, not overloading you or taking tangents, just effective and clear communication, and points you in the right direction if you want to know more. I just hope he releases another HTML specific game course with just more "traditional games education in the lense of HTML" stuff, Id' buy it instantly.

This course is not for beginners. I was expecting a beginner to pro tutorial. Instructor is not explaining the basic concept of a game loop. Without that understanding, it is very difficult to follow the code. Here the instructor is explaining his code. But as a web developer I am not able to understand the core concepts of a game engine. So the instructor has to add extra videos in the first chapter itself about a game loop. And what are the functions needed to run and maintain the game loop.

This course explains many game development topics in a good to follow but very compact way. Its like zip compressed knowledge that will for beginners expand the understanding of game development of 30 hours in just 6 hours. It is a good overview of how many game types (cards, jump 'n' run, board, frogger style, etc.) work and can be created and extended. Very good tutor and content. It is a very good starting point to begin your personal game experiments journey.

I'm C# .net developer for over 20 years, my son wants to learn game programming, so naturally I started looking at C/C++ but after a google came across this which looks pretty straight forwards. I'm from Yorkshire, so although the lecturer is a Lancastrian I can forgive him for that (just!) I live in NZ and it's nice to hear a familiar accent, plus so far he's very thorough.

Another good one by Nik, this time canvas. The course is right to the words of the author, as in the description. The course properly targets developers with intermediate level of JS ES6 (OO) with no knowledge of animation. It is taught with follow-my-code videos, which should be right for intermediate level. It is important to mention the use of sprites instead of creating shapes, so the course is not for advanced animation in pure canvas. There are a lot of similar courses in the market and a lot of what is taught here can be done with dedicated packages (eg. tween.js), so it is more about learning the basics. However you will get very good, hard-to-find tips that could be applicable to more complex situations (eg. code structure, tricks explained, scene setup, others). FIRST TIMERS and PRO'S TIPS.

"Awful, not what I expected at all" If you want to teach people to go from a novice to a pro you need to go step by step and explain the concepts in detail at every step, not I wrote some code and be like "bla bla and ... bla bla... and now it works". Not worth the money... seriously.

By Baron Pollak on 1/3/2019

I wanted to like this course, the problem is all the code was already written. He just walked you through what he wrote, this is more for very experienced coders who just to know better ways to develop applications.
