Make Visual Novels with Ren'Py (Udemy.com)

Overall it`s a not bad course for beginners, but it needs to be more structured and detailed. The course is good for a briefly look on RenPy and for making your first really simple project. But the course seems to be a bit chaotic and sometimes it appears to be a lack of information. But, nevertheless, thank you for the course!

It's a good run down of the Ren'Py fundamentals, something I needed amidst all of the disorganized information overload on Youtube, it was genuinely curated to cover the basics of Ren'Py and it will be a series of videos I will revisit should I need to brush up on my knowledge base.

You basically gave us a brief understanding of Ren'py which can be found on YouTube and the documentation of Ren'Py. Maybe you could go through a complete VN that can be played after we go through the steps. You did however describe things pretty basically that was easily understood by someone who has a very basic understanding of coding in general. Thank you.

Where is a source code of My VN? A source code should be provided. 9. Control Flow is overcomplicated. A lot of screens of code. I guess, students would like to play with a code. I was trying to use Jumps with parameters (9. Control Flow) but got a syntax error during compilation stage. "jump end(num)" and "jump loop(num+1)" expressions are throwing an error. (Maybe RenPy 8 does not support this feature)

It's short and basic but it delivers what it promises. It says it's one-hour duration, but this hour is really full of information, differently from another Ren'Py basic course I did in this same site where it promised 2h but the net duration of useful stuff was probably half an hour, because the guy spent the course googling and selecting images to use and also committed loads of mistakes and spent time trying to figure out what was wrong and correcting it. So, if you want a basic Ren'Py introduction delivered in 1h, stick to this course here, but keep in mind that, since it starts from the beginning, it will deliver what is possible to deliver in 1h. The only thing that came up short was the GUI customization, because she just shows what can be done but not so much how to do it.

Good and easy enough to understand, especially for beginners. The only hard part is the exercise, which includes functions that were never discussed in the previous parts but nothing that a little Documentation Diving cannot solve.

Great intro. These basics were easy to understand. It would be great to see an updated version with more modern examples of how you'd make a basic visual novel. Ideally some extra features too, because ren'py is actually very capable of doing great projects. It's helpful to know the very basics of Python and familiarity with code editors for this course. It's hands-on if you build a simple visual novel while learning each feature.

The instructor, Elaine, herself deserves five stars or more. She is fantastic. Not only as an instructor, but a savior to someone who was lost in outdated Ren'Py examples on YouTube until I found her channel. Finally, here was someone making new examples with the newer version of Ren'Py with the new gui settings. That said, this course in and of itself is a little lacking. I feel bad typing that; but I feel it is true. A lot of what is covered in this course could easily be learned by paying attention to the tutorial project that comes with Ren'Py and looking at the associated .rpy script files. Also, while normally more upbeat and engaged in her YouTube tutorials, here the instructor almost comes off as nervous with far too many "ums" and "okays." Arg! That was truly painful to write. Elaine is a wonderful pillar of the Ren'Py community and seems like an equally wonderful individual. I have no regrets in purchasing this course once I realized the instructor and person I had watched on YouTube were one and the same. I hope purchasing this course helps her make more content, and I will definitely become a Patreon patron of hers once I am able to pitch in. So while I can't find it in me to leave a bad rating, my personal advise is to seek her out on YouTube and support her via Patreon. It will definitely benefit you and probably more directly benefit the instructor.

The course is great, especially for beginners. It is also very helpful for those people like me who used ren'py before but havent done so in months. I'm not really a coder but I've been making short story games with this software. Course helps in re orienting myself with the renpy language. This offers a thorough introduction but it also reveals more advanced stuff that i didn't know it can do. The creator is very approachable too and is active in renpy community. I just hope for more in-depth explanations and examples especially for the images and screens. I will definitely look forward to more advanced courses.
