Course Description

Learn how to write a full CRUD REST API with Nodejs, Express and Jest using the test-driven development method!

TDD is becoming more and more of standard, and for good reasons!

With TDD, you can feel more safe and secure that any changes you make are not breaking existing functionality in your applications. Manual tests cannot be sustainable in large applications, or even medium applications. Plus, they're incredibly tedious.

Without TDD... well, you know the story. You try to add functionality while trying to touch the existing code as little as possible, because you don't want to break things unintentionally..

With TDD you won't be scared to make big refactors in your code to clean up messy code, you will know quickly if you've broken any existing functionality!

I'll show you step-by-step how to create a REST API with Express with unit tests and integration tests using the Jest test framework. There's going to be lots of opportunities for you to work on your own and do some exercises as well for optimal learning!

This course gives an understanding about jest framework and testing REST API using node.js and express.js framework. This course is very good if you are new to TDD. I learned the core understanding how we can implement unit test and integration test properly. Many advanced techniques not covered but it is good for getting started with jest and TDD.

Great course! Lots of practice and examples. Some tests seem redundant to me and I probably wouldn't do the same in daily life, but as an introduction and practice, the course was really good. If you are new to unit testing and TDD in Node JS/Express, this is a great starting point. Congratulations to the instructor, the very clear way of explaining and speaking, makes it easier for those with non-native english.

Before taking up this course, I have read reviews on both ends (5 stars, 2 stars & 1 star). While not everything is covered, I would say this course is meant to kickstart your learning and understanding of TDD and unit testing, especially if you are completely new. And I am confident to say that this course is well-scoped and suffice in building one's foundation and having a big picture. After completing the course, it has helped to bridge some gaps and understanding of how unit testing works, especially in the area of mocking values. While my projects don't really just do CRUD operations, I am able to take actionable steps to apply what I have learnt into my projects. Considering that the Jest documentation can be quite foreign if you are new, going through this course let me go beyond to continue learning and understanding Jest and mocking in particular. Feedback: Will be good to occasionally check if the services suggested to use is still applicable. For example, the DB cloud service used which is mLab, is now part of MongoDB Atlas. Perhaps update/provide a guide (in PDF) on how to use MongoDB Atlas instead. Fortunately, it wasn't as difficult to use MongoDB Atlas as they provide code snippet on how to connect to the database. However, some students may find it overwhelming if they are not familiar with using these cloud services and databases. Thank you for this course, appreciate it!

This course contains very basic understanding of Node and HTTP method, it is quite suitable for those who has just started out backend development, but maybe not for veterans. However a simple project like this does do the trick well - we can focus on TDD itself and learn a lot.

This course was pretty good. I was looking for something that would literally walk through adding tests to and actual node project and we did that in this course. However, I do think it should be reiterated that this course is specifically for testing node API's not general node applications. Unfortunately there continues to be a dearth of information on that particular topic, however this course can potentially be a good way to get comfortable enough with testing that you can figure it out yourself.

Good learning experience. Got to know how to unit test the Express Application. Would be great if you can explain about jest and its jest.mock() and jest.fn() concept and its underlying functionality.

woww.. If you want to do a project to learn each and every aspect of the development criticalities and also want to feel super confident on these technologies and development practices, then you are at right place. I was confident on my technical abilities on Node, express and TDD and now I am super confident...

The information is great and Stefan has been very helpful. I'm doing my own hosting on a separate Ubuntu 18.04 box. --EDIT: I found my problems. They had to do with new syntax for mongodb, express, jest, and eslint.-- There has to be something wrong with my setup because unit and integrated testing throws errors, but Postman and browser work fine. Stefan runs my code in his env and it all goes smoothly.

It is a "short course"(only 3 hours) but it's worth it. It is one of the things I needed it. How to make test and tdd. I come from AngularJS/Angular camp, and despite I knew some NodeJS, one of the missing things I didn't know was to make tests. So, even If I am going to finish soon this course, I will watch it again many times because I want to learn it. Maybe the only thing I miss here is more explanation from the documentation.

By Rishav Rungta on 9/2/2019

Well, now that I have completed the course I must say, I love it. The teacher is quite professional and his accent is easily understandable. Thanks. The only thing missing here is a real-time demonstration of an actual application which uses this CRUD API. That would open up our minds even clearer.
