Our take

Based on the ratings of 379 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a free, short introduction to React Native, and it doesn't pretend to be more. Ryan Dhungel spends just under two hours across 19 lectures showing how to set up Expo, build UI components, wire up state, and put together signup and signin screens. The real audience is React developers who want a first look at mobile before paying for something longer. The requirements ask for JavaScript, basic React, and comfort with a terminal, and one reviewer who ignored that found it rough. About 16,000 students have enrolled, and the last update was in February 2024.

Reviewers at four and five stars call it clear and simple, a decent first idea of how React Native works, and one says he finished every tutorial with understanding. The complaints are consistent, though. Several reviewers feel it is a preview for a bigger paid course and ends abruptly. One two-star review points out that the section named TextInput ScrollView and Image never actually covers ScrollView. Others mention weak audio and video quality, English diction that is hard to follow, some rambling over small concepts, and the instructor searching for an Android simulator rather than emulator, which one reviewer took as a sign of thin technical grounding.

Sitting beside courses like The Practical Guide and The Complete React Native + Hooks Course on the React Native list, this one is free and under two hours, and that is its whole pitch. Nobody will get much past the basics here. But as a free way to see whether Expo and the React Native way of thinking suit you before buying a much longer course, it does the job. Go in expecting a taster, not a curriculum.

Best forReact developers who want a quick, free taste of React Native and Expo before committing to a paid course.
Skip it ifYou want ScrollView, the keyboard fix, or anything past the basics; reviewers say this is a preview, not a full course.

Pros

  • Free and under two hours, so it costs nothing to find out whether React Native is for you.
  • Covers Expo setup, TextInput, state hooks, and signup and signin screens in a linear, easy-to-follow order.
  • One reviewer who started with no React Native knowledge says he finished every tutorial and understood it.
  • Updated in February 2024, so the Expo workflow shown is not badly dated.

Cons

  • Ends abruptly; several reviewers call it a preview for a bigger paid course.
  • Section 4 promises ScrollView but never covers it, according to a two-star review.
  • Low-star reviews cite poor audio and video quality, and one found the instructor's English diction hard to follow.
It's a great course for the beginner who doesn't know anything about react native. I think this course should also extend at some level to get the full understanding for the free users.

Listed as All Levels, but the requirements assume JavaScript and basic React; total beginners in the reviews struggled.

Course Description

Have you ever wanted to build mobile apps for IOS and Android platforms? With this course, you will be able to get up and running with react native in very short time.

With react native you will be able to build an app for both platforms using a single codebase. If you already know the basics of react, getting started with react native is really easy.

Even if you have no prior knowledge of react, I will show you how you can prepare yourself for this course.

This course is also great for web developers who want to dive into the field of mobile app development.

This course will help you get up and running with react native so that you can learn how to build UI components in react native. You will learn to build multiple screens and implement navigation too.

You will also learn to implement WebView, which will allow you to wrap your existing website in your app so that you can serve your website as an app to your users with any real effort of re-creating the entire app in react native. That sounds amazing right?

There are many real world use cases used in this course that you can use while building any other react native apps in future. For example taking user input, creating signup and signin screens, learning reactive state management, creating reusable components, customizing splash screen, learning flexbox CSS for creating desired layout etc.

We will also be using expo to build react native apps which makes things even more easier. Using IOS and Android simulators is also covered in this course so that you can run your app in simulators in your computer however real device (your iphone/android phone) can also be used to test your app.

Join me in this course and take your excitement of learning react native to build IOS/Android apps to reality.

This React Native course was extremely informative and practical. The concepts were explained clearly, and learning through real-world examples made it very engaging. Highly recommended for both beginners and intermediate developers

It's a great course for the beginner who doesn't know anything about react native. I think this course should also extend at some level to get the full understanding for the free users.

By Dmitry Zorin on 12/6/2024

Frankly, I expected it to be a complete thing, not just a preview of a bigger paid course. Also, there are too much words in some places for small concepts that could be understood and described with much less talking, so there's some time wasting inside. But overall it's pretty good introduction of a concept. Worth watching.
