RESTful Web Services with Spring Framework - A quick start (Udemy.com)

A quick start to building your REST API with Spring Boot and Spring MVC

Created by: Sergey Kargopolov

Last updated August 2024

Our take

Based on the ratings of 4,822 students and a sample of their written reviews, the syllabus, the course as of August 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, three hour introduction to building REST endpoints with Spring Boot, aimed at Java developers who have never touched Spring. Sergey Kargopolov walks through the setup of Spring Tool Suite and Postman, then covers GET, POST, PUT and DELETE handlers, query and path parameters, JSON and XML responses, validation, exception handling and dependency injection across 35 lectures. The syllabus is deliberately narrow. There is no database, no security beyond a six minute bonus section, and no quizzes or coding exercises. It suits someone who wants to see a working Spring REST service before committing to a longer course.

Reviewers like the pace. The recurring praise is that Kargopolov gets to the point, keeps videos short and picks a sensible level of detail for each annotation, so people report being able to code along without getting lost. One says it took two days. The complaints are mild. A four star reviewer wanted middleware covered, and one satisfied student warns that the course assumes you already know what REST is and is really about hands on practice, not concepts. With 4,822 reviews and only 82 at one or two stars, the criticism is mostly about scope, not quality.

Value is hard to argue with since the course is free, and it was last updated in August 2024, so the tooling is not badly dated. It sits beside broader courses in Python, Flutter and Arduino on our Software Development page, and it is the odd one out: a short, single topic taster rather than a full curriculum. Treat it as a first afternoon with Spring. If it clicks, you will need a longer course for the security, database and testing pieces this one leaves out.

Best forJava developers who have never used Spring and want a working REST API in an afternoon before committing to a long course.
Skip it ifYou already know Spring MVC basics or need databases, security and testing covered, none of which are here.

Pros

  • Free, and refreshed in August 2024 rather than left at its 2018 publish date.
  • Reviewers praise short videos that get to the point, with just enough detail on each annotation to code along.
  • Covers the full request cycle: GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, query and path parameters, JSON and XML responses, validation.
  • Only 82 of 4,822 reviews are one or two stars, and one student reports finishing the whole thing in two days.

Cons

  • No quizzes, coding exercises or assignments; the only practice is coding along with the videos.
  • Skips databases, middleware and security apart from a six minute bonus section.
  • Assumes you already know what REST is; one reviewer says it is not for people starting from zero.
The teacher goes to the point and explain all the necessary subjects, but without beating around the bush.
Nuria Cambronero González, a student

Marked beginner, but that means beginner to Spring: you need basic Java already, and knowing what REST is helps.

Course Description

This video course is a Quick Start to learning How to Build RESTful Web Services with Spring Framework.

As you go through this video course you will learn how to use tools like:

  • Spring Tool Suite Development Environment,

  • Postman HTTP client, so that you can send HTTP Requests and Receive HTTP Responses,

  • You will also learn how to Download and Install Java if you do not have it already.

Although this video course is very short, and is very simple, it is also very practical!

  • You will write Java code that handles different types of HTTP Requests. You will learn how to create web service endpoints that accept HTTP Post, HTTP GET, HTTP PUT and HTTP Delete requests.

  • You will learn how to make your RESTful Web Service endpoints accept information via URL Query String parameters, via URL Path Parameters as well as information sent via the body of HTTP Request,

  • Additionally to learning how to read request parameters from HTTP request, you will learn how to make your RESTful Web Service, return information in different formats. For example, you will learn how to return information as a plain text or as a JSON or XML document.

  • You will learn how to validate HTTP request parameters and also how to validate a information sent via HTTP Request body. Make sure that certain required fields are not empty and that email address for example is of a correct format.

  • You will learn how to handle errors in your RESTful Web Service and also learn how to return information about the error in different custom formats.

  • And finally, additionally to building and running your RESTful Web Service with a Spring Tool Suite development environment, you will learn how to run your RESTful Web Service as a standalone Java application which runs independently of your development environment.

It is a good course, and I liked the examples and the evolution of learning through different topics. And I think there are more basic topics which can be covered by this course like the concept of the middle ware which will improve the course coverage of the framework features.

Very fast way to practise the restful webservices. Most of the topics are covered like exception, dependency injection along with restful webservices. This course is not for who don't know anything about rest. This course is for those who already have some idea about rest and who want hands on experience. But this tutorial was excellent, it saved a lot of time for me by covering all the topics in an understandable fast way.

By Keerthi Bhushan on 3/6/2023

Excellent course for a Spring beginner. I could easily follow and code alongside successfully. Very appropriate level of detail for different annotations - not too deep unnecessarily - which helps any seasoned programmer understand the annotation quickly and get the coding going. I would recommend this to any newbie to Spring.

By Neo Lichaba on 9/21/2022

Course was well-structured, videos were the right duration and voice over at the right pace. He provided clarity on concepts as he explained them clearly and well enough. I had not learnt how to debug in Spring and thus I am happy that that was demonstrated.

By Prasad Haryan on 1/6/2021

The overall course is good and content also useful for beginner context. But, in course content I have doubt in autowired service layer class and constructor based dependency injection. In which autowired dependency injection is not working properly as shown in course. While doing it, autowired dependency injection is failed.

This is the BEST course I've seen on Spring Framework and RESTful API's. I've watched many before this one and none of them have truly explained how to use annotations and how everything fits together. You, sir, have explained all of this and more in such a clear and concise way. I'm going to watch it all again.

By Muhammad Shakir on 7/23/2019

This is the best, compile, resourceful tutorial I have found so far regarding a restful web service. The instructor is really down to help if you really come across any problem. Highly encourage to take this course before dive into restful intermediate course by Sergey! Thank you for helping me out.

By Meghraj Falle on 6/9/2019

This Course was fantastic, very precise and up to the mark. In a very short time we can know how to create a RESTful Webservice. The only thing that could have made this more better is, if there was real practical case scenario shown as example along with the connectivity to the database.

By Frank Tudor on 3/12/2019

So far I like the details and pace of the training. I am learning so much from this. I've had concepts missing on prior RestAPI development in another language. This is really filling in gaps in my mind and questions I had but due to deadlines had to keep going. I am enrolling in your next course as well. Thank you!

By Anirudh Patel on 1/7/2019

I found the course to be really helpful for those who are just starting to learn Spring framework. I wish there was some more explanation on Spring MVC and some more annotations were covered. Nevertheless, the instructor has done its job nicely and the course is really nice to start with for beginners.
