The course is laid out in an easy to understand format:
First Ill be teaching you the fundamentals of perspective. Well go through 1 and 2 point perspective, offering the same assignments that I had when I was a student in some of the top design schools.
After that, Ill be teaching you the importance of lighting and how to shade and render the basic elements that create everything. Spheres, Cubes, Cones, and Cylinders. These are the elements that make up almost everything around us.
Next youll be learning about color theory and which colors to choose for your shadows and lights. Color is an essential part of establishing the mood in a painting.
After this youll be combining the basic forms in order to bring what weve learned so far together and make some recognizable scenes.
Next we move on to jumping straight into building our first scene. Youll start by drawing out a line work and setting up the perspective exactly how I taught you in the perspective lessons. Well focus on composition and object placement to make the most of the space in our canvas. Focusing heavily on setting up our image to achieve a feeling of depth, which is one of the most important things in environment painting.
After this we refine the sketch to further enhance the idea. Redrawing it and making sure all of our elements are in place before painting.
Next well begin by roughly painting the main colors in. Figuring out what color everything is as well as how things change color the further they get away. Applying what we learned earlier in the color theory into some real painting situations.
Lastly after we get the main elements of our painting established. Our colors in place, and everything set up. Well start detailing the painting and adding all the little elements that bring the painting to life. Painting grass, wood, fencing and trees.
In the next session well do another line work. Starting rough and working cleaner. Ill teach you to draw on top of a 3 point perspective grid.
This painting will be started by first finding all of our shadows before we start with colors. Its important to know our shadows and lighting before we start adding details.
After this the next few hours are spent adding tons and tons of detail. Ill be explaining how high detail images are really just a series of decisions made over and over and is actually quite simple. By the end of this section youll be a master of detail!

So far, this course has been very effective within the confines of what environmental concept art should be. I've been learning about point perspective and also color ambience! All essential to the development of creating such desired endeavours!

By Isaac Chuah on 11/14/2020

Although it has a lot of the same content as ModernDayJames' YT channel, it goes way more into depth on how you would go about doing certain bits and bops which really advanced my knowledge. This is especially true for the line weight lecture.

Colton is a fabulous teacher! This is exactly the kind of methodology for creating beautiful imaginative art that I've been needing. I love how the curriculum eases you into the projects, and never makes you feel rushed, lost, or overwhelmed. It's so easy to follow along and he's excellent at explaining what he's doing and his thought process during. I highly recommend any of his courses!

Im really learning a lot in this course, Mr Colton really has an amazing way to explain how to build a high quality landscape painting, even in his most simple and starting lessons i was capable to have an considerable evolution in my paintings. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Mr. Colton!!

I learned some pretty good techniques! However, I hoped it would be more technique-intense rather than just following a painting process.

As a beginner, this course was very helpful. Especially the first part about the fundamentals. The second part is very long to follow but it is worthy to see how to put all the details in a painting. You don't find this real-time slow detailing on Youtube for free, where is all time-lapsed. I have only one piece of advice for the teacher. I have a little familiarity with photoshop (twisting photos) but sometimes it was difficult to follow when you use shortcut. For someone who use PS for the first time, try to explain the shortcut that PS has at least the first time you use it. Thanks

I'm almost finished with this course and have really enjoyed it so far! I'm complete beginner with environments, so everything was brand new to me going in. Everything was easy to understand, but I do wish just a bit more time had been spent on cylinders and cones. Other than that, everything was good and I feel like I have a solid foundation to work with now. The instructor Colton does a great job of sharing his thoughts, intentions, and reasoning behind what he does, especially in later lessons where he walks you through the full process from rough sketch to adding polish. He's pretty enthusiastic and upbeat, which makes it easy to stay engaged even on the longer videos.

Awesome course, would recommend it to anyone who got the time. I really appreciated that you went through every single thing in real time!

By Electro Fried on 8/23/2020

Teacher goes too fast, never pauses to allow work and just assumes people will follow many steps without properly explaining how and why. You will find better and more concise guides on youtube for free that offer much more. I can not recommend this for anyone, for beginners it is too focused and assumes too much and for those with a solid understanding it offers very little in the way of explanations of more advanced concepts. I got more knowledge from three hours of Bob Ross videos than I did watching this for half a day.
