Our take

Based on the ratings of 450 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short, free Angular 4 course built around one project, an images and videos gallery. It runs about 4.3 hours over 28 lectures in four sections, and nearly all the teaching sits in one 226 minute build. It covers routing, custom pipes, search, HTTP requests, custom services, Bootstrap 3 and a Heroku deploy. Despite the Beginner label, the requirements ask for the author's TypeScript course first, and one reviewer who skipped it calls this not an introductory course. Around 29,000 students have taken it.

Praise centers on Justin Mitchel's delivery. Reviewers call the explanations clear, simple and quick, and one likes that he shows the errors along the way. The complaints are just as consistent. Several say the pace is fast and concepts get touched, not explained. One says a lot of time goes to Bootstrap rather than Angular, and others cite messy code and spelling slips. Some miss unit testing, real REST services and typed interfaces. The rating is 4.4 from 450 reviews, with 207 five-star ratings and 24 at two stars or below.

The course was last updated in July 2017, and a recent reviewer calls it basic and a bit obsolete. Treat it as a first project, not a current reference. It costs nothing, and that is the real case for it: an afternoon to see how pipes, services and routing fit together. If you are brand new to code, or want modern Angular, start with a newer course.

Best forDevelopers who know some JavaScript and want a quick, free tour of Angular 4 routing, pipes and services.
Skip it ifYou want current Angular, unit testing, or slow explanations for a true first-time coder.

Pros

  • Free and short at about 4.3 hours, so the time risk is small
  • One real project, an images and videos gallery, ties routing, pipes and services together
  • Reviewers find the explanations clear and simple, and the instructor covers errors as they come up
  • Ends with a Heroku deploy so the finished app goes live

Cons

  • Last updated July 2017, and a recent reviewer finds the Angular 4 material obsolete
  • Fast pace, and several reviewers say concepts are touched on, not really explained
  • No quizzes or exercises, and reviewers miss unit testing and real REST services
Quick and to the point explanation help me learn concepts without getting bored.

Labeled beginner, but the requirements list the author's TypeScript course first, and reviewers say the pace is fast.

Course Description

Angular is a front-end, client-side, framework that is absolutely a beast. Developed for years under Google's leadership, this open-source technology will likely shape how you build apps for years to come.

Angular, formally AngularJS, has evolved from it's early days to be now working with TypeScript. If you haven't used typescript before, you should check out my course Getting Started With TypeScript to get a stronger understanding of the language prior to jumping in here.

Angular is fast, effecient, and a joy to build with. They call it "One framework. Mobile & desktop." for good reason: it's made to be used everywhere.

In this course you will learn the fundamentals of Angular so you can get started right away. We'll even show you how to build a live website using Heroku.

Are you ready to begin?

Let's do this :)

Cheers,

Justin

It all started with an idea. I wanted freedom... badly. Freedom from work, freedom from boredom, and, most of all, the freedom to choose. This simple idea grew to define me; it made me become an entrepreneur.

As I strived to gain freedom, overtime I realized that with everything that you do you can either (1) convince someone, somehow, to do it with you or (2) figure out how to do it yourself.

Due to a lack of financial resources (and probably the ability to convince people to do high quality work for free), I decided to learn. Then learn some more. Then some more. My path of learning website design started a long time ago. And yes, it was out of need not desire. I believed I needed a website for a company that I started. So I learned how to do it. The company died, my skills lived on... and got better and better.

It took me a while after learning web design (html/css) to actually start learning programming (web application, storing "data", user logins, etc). I tinkered with Wordpress, believing it could be a "user" site, but I was mistaken. Sure there are/were hacks for that, but they were hacks/work-arounds and simply not-what-wordpress-was-indended-to-be. Wordpress is for blogs/content. Plain and simple.

Buen curso. Básico, pero bueno. No está actualizado. Si bien tiene información sobre los aspectos básicos de Angular, por no estar actualizado, queda un poco obsoleto.

By Matej Lednár on 1/25/2024

Use interface instead of class. To many any types. Bootstrap/styling solution not finished. Some bug fixes were without inspecting the dom in the DevTools. He didn't inspect the problem and test it in the DevTools for faster bug detection. Only a basic Angular overview.

By Michael Sterling on 4/13/2018

NOT an introductory course. Beware, if coming from Angular.js directly, there are many topics merely alluded to, or linked, for separate study. It may be my own fault for skipping the TypeScript module on the CFE site, but wow. It seems that a lot of the time is spent learning Bootstrap, not angular. I haven't seen anything about Unit Testing or e2e yet, which is a bit disconcerting. Still, for the price I got it at, and the mantra that coders should be masters with the google search, still a decent product. I might be spoilt for other courses and their more in-depth explanations and mini quiz format.

Buen tono de voz, el video muestra justo lo que desea ver y la explicación es buena

By Frank Gonzalez on 12/19/2017

For a complete beginner wanting to learn about the new stuff in Angular 4 this is a great course, it goes step by step through what you need to know to build the images/videos gallery that is shown at the beginning

By Neha Ambasta on 11/19/2017

Apart from teaching fundamentals, he is also covering the errors part. So it is good for the person who is going to implement this.

By Abdullah Rady on 11/16/2017

So far so good! The instructor is knowledgeable, the explanation is clear and simple.

By Stephen Mcguire on 10/20/2017

Outstanding! Understanding the relationship and interaction between components and modules are clearly demonstrated. In addition, I finally understand how and when the index.html file is created and updated. Thank you.

Great introduction to Angular 4. Would have liked to see a backend db serving REST endpoints and use of material-ui. But pace was on point. Explanation was solid. There were points when the instructor would mention topics and seemed that he wanted to go in-depth but it would have taken the video down a rabbit hole. Solid execution of the topic.

By Joe Magaro on 9/26/2017

Good content, pretty clear explanations. A little fast, needed to stop and rewatch video to see some of the details i missed. Overall, very good.
