Course Description
Have you ever wanted to build a 2D Roguelike game using the Unity game engine like 'Enter The Gungeon' or 'The Binding of Isaac'?
Well with this course you can!
The course and underlying project have taken several thousand hours to develop, but all that knowledge will be transferred to you step by step, lecture by lecture. The course is massive with over 50 hours of detailed video tutorials spread over more than 160 lectures. This has to be one of the most complete and sophisticated Unity 2D development courses available.
We’ll take you through every line of code and every configuration step, from a blank Unity project to a fully functional and complete game. The game is built in a modular and expandable way, and uses best practice coding techniques like events to decouple the interdependencies in the code. The project has been built under GIT source control, so you can easily load the supplied completed course at a save point for every lecture.
The game is sophisticated, and goes far beyond what most Unity courses will ever attempt to teach you. The course covers :
Creating a node editor tool to build dungeon level layouts
Procedural random dungeon generation
Multiple game levels
2D lighting using the Unity Universal Render Pipeline
A UI minimap
A dungeon overview map with player teleporting
Multiple player characters
A range of weapons and ammunition types
Multiple enemy characters
Particle system special effects
Shader graph material effects
AStar enemy pathfinding
Enemy weapon firing AI
Enemy ammo patterns
Lootable Chests
Flippable tables for cover
Sound effects
and Game music
This is just a selection of what you’ll learn, and all the assets you’ll need to complete the course and produce a fully functional and polished game are included. The concepts you’ll learn will help you create your own game that you can tailor to match your game development vision.

Are you passionate about game development? Well, if you are, welcome to my Udemy courses! My interest in game development started over 40 years ago when I had my first computer - a Tandy TRS-80. This was soon followed by a Sinclair Spectrum and other micro computers of that era. I had my first game commercially published in 1983 while I was still at school. My career took me into corporate business software development and project management. Over the last few years I have discovered the Unity game engine with C# scripting, picking up my interest in game development where I left off all those years ago.... and wow, haven't things changed! The tools available to the budding game developer now are just fantastic and incredibly powerful. I wish you every success on your game development journey and hope you find it as interesting as I do.

25% inside this course. Already learnt so much about creating an custom editor tool in Unity and procedural Dungeon Generation. BUT please do not take this as your first course. You will get scared and/or bored. While the value in this course is amazing, it can get boring and monotonous. Especially because you spend hours coding without seeing much advancements in your project visually. Once all of it is done, it is very rewarding. Do some other courses, create simple games and get comfortable with programming design patterns like Singletons, Observer, etc and then come in here. Else you might have a hard time following through this course.

An amazingly thorough course that goes through so many aspects of game development. I do feel ready to start my own project. It took me a while, but it's well worth it. It doesn't cover the pixel art creation, of course (nor does it cover the musical creation, while we're at it), but that, I guess, would be out of scope. The course covers everything that's done in Unity. And you end up with something that you can use as a framework to create your own games. This tutorial is a must! This guy's dedication is outstanding.

This is an excellent course, and I feel like I've learned a lot. It has taken my understanding of games to a whole new level, improved my programming skills, and introduced me to many things I had never known before. Especially the initial part about the map editor left a deep impression on me. I had no idea that you could combine random maps in such a perfect way with the A* algorithm. It feels like there's a lot of room for improvement for me to explore. There's so much more to learn, and if you're considering buying this course, you won't be disappointed! The only thing I felt was lacking is the inability to have real-time interactions with everyone (this is my personal opinion). There wasn't a Discord channel, perhaps because the instructor might not have had the time. Managing a Discord can be quite resource-intensive.

This course was well worth investing the money and the time. As stated in the course description, this course is an intermediate course and you should be well familiar with Unity and have some coding experience. If you don't... don't take the course, most likly it will be frustrating. The course overall is excellently structured with a wide range on functionalities and features that get implemented. Rob is an excellent teacher, slowly and clearly describing all neccessary steps and how they fit into the bigger picture of the game. His voice is very pleasant and calm, so you can stay over 50 hours and listen to him. Even for none native English speaker it's easy to follow along. This course is one of the most complete Unity development courses I saw so far on Udemy. If I would have a wish... I would like to see a 3D course from Rob on that detail level... Till then, i'll continue with his second Udemy course. Good job!!!

The course is detailed in the context of game design and game complexity. You will learn a few essential concepts in detail. The assets are well-prepared but you can use them only for learning purposes. But as an experienced non-game, non-c# developer The course follows an unnatural way of every development project where you start with a simple code, extend it, and refactor it over time. Instead, you will write a lot of code that you will use in the following lectures or sections. Boring way of explaining things Bad design and method complexity, not cashing method invocations, sometimes even for heavy ones like GetComponent Bad coding style ...even newbie mistakes like if (somevar == true { return true; } else { return false; }

If there was a Unity University this is what it would look like. I would say this is more of an intermediate to advanced course. The tutor does not waste time by typing code rather than copy-paste and explaining what things do. This style might not be attractive to some people, but then the course would be 200 hours. And sometimes I find it boring to type. You get every lesson's repository by git which is awesome. It is packed with much knowledge and sometimes it is hard to follow so you need lots of time to comprehend things. Overall one of the most complete courses out there. I would say you need at least 1.5+ years of experience with Unity and gamedev overall.

What an excellent course. Rob, thanks so much for putting this together. It's exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to learn best practices for developing a _full_ game, and this fulfilled that in spades. The settings class, utilizing GameResources class, HelperUtilities, Music and Sound Managers, the separating of the enums into their own class, even the file structure was a big plus for me. Not to mention the systems; pooling management, the A*, the dungeon creator, implementation of layers. The SingletonMonobehaviour was a neat way to make singletons that I hadn't come across before, but makes absolute sense. It was all very impressive! And we made a fun game as well! I appreciate the work you put into this and look forward to getting anything else you publish. Just absolutely impressive.

Very impressive course. Pleasant voice to listen to. Answered any questions I had within 24hrs. Made sure to show how every prefab and script was set up and explained the reason behind setting it up that way. Has very nice section layout at the beginning of each lecture to show the break down of what we will be doing and how. I wouldn't say this is a beginners course you definitely need to have some understanding of C# and unity to be able to understand this level of coding. If you have a good understanding and you are just looking to see how to build a 2D dungeon style game or just expand and learn new techniques then definitely worth the time and money. I learned a lot of new things that I haven't seen done before in this way and I look forward to taking more courses by this developer.

This is an excellent course if you want to learn making the essentials of a roguelike game! Rob does a terrific job in explaining his code and the reasoning behind his implementations. The overview slides in the beginning of the sections are super useful when preparing to implement the code. There is alot of scripting involved however, so I would recommend doing a few other courses and then getting this course when you are comfortable enough with scripting, especially knowledge of using loops. Easily the best game dev course I've come across on Udemy, you can really appreciate the amount of time and effort Rob has put into this after you finish the course.

This is an amazing and in-depth course! There is so much content and I especially like that you take time to cover the concepts behind many of the components implemented. It would have been nice to see more in-depth, multi-stage boss battles. But that might have taken an entire section in itself. Either way, a great course!
